Chapter 3

Author: Moon in Flight
The next morning, I found Luca still waiting outside my door. The moment he heard it open, he straightened up.

"They were all just joking around in the group chat. Viola was only helping out. The final decision about the wedding is still yours."

He picked up the jewelry box again and held it out to me.

In the past, he'd promised that once things settled down with the family, he'd take me to choose my wedding dress. I'd believed him, setting aside time for it every year as our anniversary approached.

The first year, he was too busy to make time for it. The second year, Viola's father had just died, making it an inappropriate time for a wedding celebration.

Eventually, I stopped asking. It seemed he'd forgotten about the promise, too.

Now, the wedding dress had already been chosen, but it was a style Viola had picked out.

"Just leave it there. I'm heading out."

Luca reached out to stop me, then slowly lowered his hand.

"I know you're upset with her. I'll be more careful from now on, but I can tell you one thing—I've never loved her."

I knew he wasn't lying, as I had seen the love he had for me.

When I graduated, he stood outside the auditorium with a bouquet in his arms, waiting for me for two whole hours like any ordinary man in love. In the photos from that day, he stood among the crowd with his eyes fixed solely on me.

"I've never doubted your relationship with Viola. But she's too important to you. So important that there's no room left for me."

"She's been spoiled and temperamental since she was a little girl. She'll grow out of it eventually," Luca explained, reaching over to gently tuck a few stray strands of hair back into my scarf.

His touch was light, just as it had always been.

"You don't have to compete with her."

I sighed. In the end, I simply couldn't be bothered to argue anymore.

He followed me downstairs and insisted on driving me to meet my mentor.

"Your hands are still so cold."

Along the way, he talked about the arrangements he'd made for our return to Sicavella and even had someone reserve a table at a restaurant I'd loved in the past.

I listened quietly, never interrupting.

Just as we approached the bridge, Viola called.

The moment Luca answered, her petulant voice filled the car.

"Luca, why are you still in Lunavere? Did you forget what we had planned for today?"

"I didn't forget," he assured her.

"Then why aren't you back yet? The yacht is already at the marina! I told you I wanted you to join me for its maiden voyage. I don't want anyone else there with me!"

Luca glanced at me before explaining, "I'm taking Elena where she needs to go first. I'll be back a little later."

"Her again!" Viola's voice shot up an octave. "Doesn't she have a driver? You promised me! I've already invited all my friends, and now you want me to stand at the marina waiting all alone?"

"Viola," he warned.

"Why are you getting mad at me? The yacht is named after my father, after all! I don't care what you have to do. You're coming with me. Get to the airport now!"

Silence settled over the car.

Luca was sitting right beside me, yet his silence told me everything I needed to know.

I took one last, lingering look at him before asking the driver to pull over.

"I can get a car here. I'll make my own way."

"She's just throwing a tantrum. You don't need to get out," he said.

Viola was still urging him to hurry through the phone.

All Luca had to do was hang up and tell the driver to keep going. We were only a few minutes from our destination, after all.

But instead, he looked away from me and got out of the car.

Once again, when forced to choose between me and that woman's tears, he abandoned me.

"I'll have the driver take you to your destination. I'll get another car to the airport and come find you tonight."

The last faint flicker of hope in my chest finally went out.

"Are you angry again?"

I shook my head gently.

"Go. She's waiting for you."

He stood there without moving, as though he wasn't used to seeing me give in so easily.

I watched as the car pulled farther away from him.

In the past, whenever something like this happened, I'd send him long messages asking why he kept leaving me behind.

Eventually, I had no choice but to accept the truth.

On Luca Valentino's scales, neither the eight years of my youth I'd given him nor even my own life could ever earn me a single unwavering choice in my favor.

But now, five days remained until I would finally be free of them all.

  • Future Donna? I'd Rather Start Over    Chapter 11

First-person POVOn the day the competition results were announced, I finally had a rare moment of free time. I was sketching in the conservatory when Magda walked in and slapped a printed list down beside me. "Take a look. Don't accuse me of holding you back." I scanned the long list of designers until I found my name, then checked it twice to make sure I hadn't misread it. I'd won an award in the emerging designers category, and my work would be featured in the public exhibition. I was so overwhelmed with excitement that tears nearly spilled from my eyes.…A few days later, Luca and I officially ended our engagement without any further complications. I handed him the necklace and engagement ring. He opened the box and stared at them for a long time. "You never wore them? Not even once?" That necklace had once been enough to earn Isabella's disdain if I so much as looked at it for too long. But by the time it was finally mine, I'd already lost all desire to wear it.

Third-person POVNot long after the announcement, Luca was summoned to answer for himself."Does she think hiding out with the Steiner family means there's nothing we can do about her? Everyone's laughing at you for getting dumped by some commoner!" Luca barely heard the complaint. He was still scrolling through the messages Elena had sent him.The Elena he'd known had always had so much to tell him. She'd tell him who had made snide remarks about her or how she'd spotted a stray puppy getting soaked in the rain and wanted to bring it home. If he took too long to reply, she'd send him an angry little emoji to let him know she was upset. Looking through those old messages, Luca couldn't help laughing. But little by little, his smile faded. Elena's messages had grown shorter and shorter over time, until all she sent him were brief replies like "Yes" and "Okay".Until, at last, only one sentence remained. "The wedding is canceled."On the phone, Isabella was still berating El

Over the next two months, I began working with clients under Magda's guidance, and little by little, I rediscovered the passion I'd once had for my craft. My competition entry gradually took shape as well. Eventually, Luca was called back to Sicavella, but the gifts kept coming. None bore a name or return address, yet I knew they were from him. Magda was so furious that she tossed every last one into the storeroom and forbade me from even looking at them. This continued until one of our clients recognized me. "Ms. Greenwood? No wonder you looked so familiar!"He turned to Magda with an amused smile. "You really are something, Prof. Steiner. You've even managed to recruit the future Donna of the Valentino Famiglia to design for you. I thought she'd be busy preparing for her wedding." I set down the sketches in my hands. "I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding. Luca and I have broken up." The client froze for a moment. "I'm sorry. I had no idea. The notice I receiv

Luca stayed in Zurviano for an entire week. Every day, enormous bouquets of expensive white roses arrived in the front hall, while gemstones of every kind piled up in a corner. He even sent over a purchase contract for a private studio overlooking Lake Zurviano. Magda didn't so much as glance at it before shoving it back into the hands of the person who'd delivered it. "Tell him to stop dumping his trash on my doorstep." The following morning, Luca sent me a photograph with a brief message. "There's something I want to return to you." The picture showed my mother's photo album and several of my early design drafts from college. I'd left them behind at his estate because I'd been in such a hurry to leave that I hadn't dared to move everything out one box at a time. I agreed to meet him at an old street-side café on the corner near my studio. Luca had arrived early, and I noticed a slice of my favorite cake waiting on the table. As I sorted through the contents of the b

"So, you really are at the Steiner Estate," Luca said the moment I answered the phone. "I'm going to be working here from now on. Besides, we've already made things clear between us. It's over." "What do you mean, it's over? Since when have we ever made things clear between us?" he shot back. Then he announced, "I'm coming to get you.""Luca—" The line went dead. Magda glanced at the phone in my hand and let out a cold laugh before instructing the butler not to let any strangers onto the estate. "Especially anyone with the last name Valentino," she stressed. …Luca arrived the following afternoon. A line of black sedans pulled up outside the estate, blocking both ends of the driveway. He stepped out of his car and headed straight for the front entrance, where Magda was already waiting on the steps, gesturing toward the cars with her cane. "Mr. Valentino, have you brought your men to surround my home? Are you here to pay a visit or declare war?" "I'm here to take

  • Future Donna? I'd Rather Start Over    Chapter 6

The day I arrived in Zurviano, my mentor, Magda Steiner, wasn't there to meet me. The driver took me straight to the Steiner Estate, a sprawling villa. I'd barely set down my luggage when a stack of design sketches landed in front of me. "I've reviewed the ones you sent me." Magda took off her glasses and tapped the top sheet with one finger. "Have you forgotten everything I taught you? You put the seam here, and the moment you lift your arm, it'll dig into your flesh." She moved on to the next sketch, her expression growing even more exasperated. "And this one. I told you eight years ago that you had a bad habit of piling on gemstones. What happened? Have you spent the last few years with the Valentinos and decided their money will never run out?" I tried to pull the sketches back toward me, offering a quiet defense. "I've already removed two stones.""What, do you want me to praise you for being frugal?" I couldn't help laughing as I picked up an eraser and rubbed ou
