Chapter 5

Author: Moon in Flight
The next morning, I received a termination notice from the jewelry brand I'd just signed a contract with.

The brand was fairly well known in the industry, and since I hadn't designed anything in a long time, I needed new work to rebuild my credibility.

That's why I'd reached out to them in the first place. When the creative director saw my initial drafts, he'd agreed to collaborate with me almost immediately.

While I was in the hospital, I'd thrown myself into revising the designs to keep my mind off Luca. Even as I recovered from my injuries, I'd worked through several sleepless nights to finish the final versions.

When the project manager received them, he praised my work repeatedly, calling the designs truly stunning.

Yet now, the only thing waiting in my inbox was a notice terminating our collaboration.

I called the project manager.

"Was there a problem with my designs?" I asked.

"No. We all think your proposals are excellent," he assured me.

"Then why are you terminating the contract?"

At first, he gave me the usual excuse about internal restructuring. It wasn't until I pressed him for a straight answer that he finally relented.

The Valentino Famiglia had offered to cover the brand's entire promotional budget for the upcoming quarter on the condition that the company replaced my designs with Viola's to strengthen her portfolio ahead of an upcoming competition.

"The executives reviewed her work and decided it was good enough to use. This way, we save a substantial amount of money and get to establish a business relationship with the Valentino Famiglia…" His voice trailed off.

I asked just one question. "Does Luca know that I'm the one being replaced?"

A long silence followed on the other end of the line.

Finally, he answered in a quiet voice, "The Don… gave the order personally."

He then continued, "Ms. Greenwood, I'm truly sorry. We did try to fight for you on our end, but the decision has already been—"

"Just pay the compensation stipulated in the contract."

He began apologizing profusely, but I didn't make things any harder for him. Luca had already made the decision for them, and there was no point in fighting something that wouldn't be reversed.

A wave of sorrow washed over me. I couldn't tell whether I felt disappointed or heartbroken.

After hanging up, I called Luca.

He answered almost immediately. "You're awake? Why weren't you home last night?"

I cut straight to the point. "Why did the brand replace my designs? You knew I was the original designer, didn't you?"

"Elena, your designs are excellent, but Viola is different. She's worked hard for a long time to put this portfolio together. This is her career," he explained.

"Don't you think that's ridiculous? Didn't I pour my heart and soul into this project, too?"

"I know you put a lot of effort into it," he assured me, but his tone was more like that of someone trying to soothe an unreasonable child than a man speaking to the woman he'd loved for eight years.

"But you're about to become Donna. Working with a brand like this could make people think you're using the family's influence for personal gain. That wouldn't look good, either."

I let out a quiet laugh.

"You paid for an entire quarter's worth of promotional expenses for Viola, yet you're worried about me abusing my position for personal gain?"

"That's not what happened," he countered. "The brand made its own decision. I merely put them in touch."

Before I could respond, Luca continued, "Just let her have this one. I'll arrange for a top jeweler to bring your designs to life, and I'll buy you that Heart of the Ocean diamond at auction. You can use it in your work. How does that sound?"

"I don't need it."

"Stop saying things you don't mean just because you're angry. Come home tonight, and we'll discuss the wedding arrangements."

"We'll see."

I hung up. By then, I felt completely numb.

I began to wonder if all eight years of our relationship had been nothing more than a fantasy I'd created in my own mind. Otherwise, why was I the only one who kept compromising, the only one who kept enduring everything?

…

Over the next two days, Luca didn't call me once.

In the past, whenever he got angry, I was always the first to give in. I'd find some excuse to reach out, asking whether he'd eaten or if he was tired.

But this time, I locked myself in my hotel room and devoted all my attention to the assignment my mentor had given me, using the gray, hazy sea stretching beyond my window as my backdrop.

On the final day, I sent my revised work to my mentor. The moment I closed my laptop, I suddenly became aware of the strong sea breeze and the dazzling sunlight streaming through the window.

Even without Luca in my life, the sun still rose every morning, right on schedule.

My phone screen lit up. It was the first text he'd sent me in three days.

"Now that you've gotten your little tantrum out of your system, come home. I'll let the past few days slide."

I offered no explanation.

Instead, I deactivated all my social media accounts, snapped my SIM card in half, and tossed it into the cold trash can in the airport terminal.

Over the loudspeaker, boarding announcements began for the flight to Zurviano. Bathed in the first light of dawn spilling through the windows, I walked through the boarding gate without looking back.

First-person POVOn the day the competition results were announced, I finally had a rare moment of free time. I was sketching in the conservatory when Magda walked in and slapped a printed list down beside me. "Take a look. Don't accuse me of holding you back." I scanned the long list of designers until I found my name, then checked it twice to make sure I hadn't misread it. I'd won an award in the emerging designers category, and my work would be featured in the public exhibition. I was so overwhelmed with excitement that tears nearly spilled from my eyes.…A few days later, Luca and I officially ended our engagement without any further complications. I handed him the necklace and engagement ring. He opened the box and stared at them for a long time. "You never wore them? Not even once?" That necklace had once been enough to earn Isabella's disdain if I so much as looked at it for too long. But by the time it was finally mine, I'd already lost all desire to wear it.

Third-person POVNot long after the announcement, Luca was summoned to answer for himself."Does she think hiding out with the Steiner family means there's nothing we can do about her? Everyone's laughing at you for getting dumped by some commoner!" Luca barely heard the complaint. He was still scrolling through the messages Elena had sent him.The Elena he'd known had always had so much to tell him. She'd tell him who had made snide remarks about her or how she'd spotted a stray puppy getting soaked in the rain and wanted to bring it home. If he took too long to reply, she'd send him an angry little emoji to let him know she was upset. Looking through those old messages, Luca couldn't help laughing. But little by little, his smile faded. Elena's messages had grown shorter and shorter over time, until all she sent him were brief replies like "Yes" and "Okay".Until, at last, only one sentence remained. "The wedding is canceled."On the phone, Isabella was still berating El

Over the next two months, I began working with clients under Magda's guidance, and little by little, I rediscovered the passion I'd once had for my craft. My competition entry gradually took shape as well. Eventually, Luca was called back to Sicavella, but the gifts kept coming. None bore a name or return address, yet I knew they were from him. Magda was so furious that she tossed every last one into the storeroom and forbade me from even looking at them. This continued until one of our clients recognized me. "Ms. Greenwood? No wonder you looked so familiar!"He turned to Magda with an amused smile. "You really are something, Prof. Steiner. You've even managed to recruit the future Donna of the Valentino Famiglia to design for you. I thought she'd be busy preparing for her wedding." I set down the sketches in my hands. "I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding. Luca and I have broken up." The client froze for a moment. "I'm sorry. I had no idea. The notice I receiv

Luca stayed in Zurviano for an entire week. Every day, enormous bouquets of expensive white roses arrived in the front hall, while gemstones of every kind piled up in a corner. He even sent over a purchase contract for a private studio overlooking Lake Zurviano. Magda didn't so much as glance at it before shoving it back into the hands of the person who'd delivered it. "Tell him to stop dumping his trash on my doorstep." The following morning, Luca sent me a photograph with a brief message. "There's something I want to return to you." The picture showed my mother's photo album and several of my early design drafts from college. I'd left them behind at his estate because I'd been in such a hurry to leave that I hadn't dared to move everything out one box at a time. I agreed to meet him at an old street-side café on the corner near my studio. Luca had arrived early, and I noticed a slice of my favorite cake waiting on the table. As I sorted through the contents of the b

"So, you really are at the Steiner Estate," Luca said the moment I answered the phone. "I'm going to be working here from now on. Besides, we've already made things clear between us. It's over." "What do you mean, it's over? Since when have we ever made things clear between us?" he shot back. Then he announced, "I'm coming to get you.""Luca—" The line went dead. Magda glanced at the phone in my hand and let out a cold laugh before instructing the butler not to let any strangers onto the estate. "Especially anyone with the last name Valentino," she stressed. …Luca arrived the following afternoon. A line of black sedans pulled up outside the estate, blocking both ends of the driveway. He stepped out of his car and headed straight for the front entrance, where Magda was already waiting on the steps, gesturing toward the cars with her cane. "Mr. Valentino, have you brought your men to surround my home? Are you here to pay a visit or declare war?" "I'm here to take

  • Future Donna? I'd Rather Start Over    Chapter 6

The day I arrived in Zurviano, my mentor, Magda Steiner, wasn't there to meet me. The driver took me straight to the Steiner Estate, a sprawling villa. I'd barely set down my luggage when a stack of design sketches landed in front of me. "I've reviewed the ones you sent me." Magda took off her glasses and tapped the top sheet with one finger. "Have you forgotten everything I taught you? You put the seam here, and the moment you lift your arm, it'll dig into your flesh." She moved on to the next sketch, her expression growing even more exasperated. "And this one. I told you eight years ago that you had a bad habit of piling on gemstones. What happened? Have you spent the last few years with the Valentinos and decided their money will never run out?" I tried to pull the sketches back toward me, offering a quiet defense. "I've already removed two stones.""What, do you want me to praise you for being frugal?" I couldn't help laughing as I picked up an eraser and rubbed ou
