Chapter 2

Author: Wealth Vacuum
I knew Alisa's jacket was Chanel because the second I walked in, she had run over to me to brag about it.

Back then, Skylar quickly dragged her aside and explained to me that he had gotten a discount through a mutual connection and that it barely cost him anything.

Before I could ask more questions, Helen started pressuring me with their so-called hometown customs.

"Seriously, if you're this stingy on your first visit to Skylar's house, won't you drain him of everything he has the moment you marry him?

"It's embarrassing that you can't even fork over 4,000 dollars. How does someone like you think you deserve him?"

Alisa spat onto my shoes with a look of disdain.

I looked up to meet her arrogant gaze.

"Shut up, Alisa," Skylar barked, then turned around to soothe me. "Don't be upset, Freya. Alisa just meant well.

"What will our family think of you if you don't hand out the cash gifts today? What will they think of me?"

Unbelievable.

I looked back and forth between the two of them, one playing the good cop and the other the bad cop. They were trying to guilt-trip me.

"Fine. I can hand out the cash gifts."

The moment the words left my mouth, Skylar's eyes lit up.

I stood up straight and added, "But have your mom transfer that 9,200 dollars to me first. Once I have the cash, I'll immediately hand out the gifts to your relatives.

"That way, your family keeps their pride, and my family's traditions are respected. It's a win-win."

"What?"

Before Skylar could even respond, Alisa's eyes widened. "Do you have any shame at all, Freya? It's your first visit, yet you dare to demand money. Are you for sale or something?

"Ah! What are you doing?"

I stomped hard on her slipper.

She screamed out in pain and stumbled backward until Skylar caught her.

Crossing my arms, I looked at her and said, "Watch your mouth. Who exactly is the shameless one here?

"Your aunt demanded thousands of dollars from me the second I walked in. How is that any different from daylight robbery?"

"How dare you!"

Enraged, she lunged forward and reached out to grab my hair.

"Enough!"

Skylar checked her foot before turning back to me with a dark expression. "Why are you being so petty with a kid, Freya? You've gone too far."

A kid? A giant infant in her twenties?

I couldn't even be bothered to argue anymore. I pushed past him, walked into the living room to grab my bag, and headed for the door without looking back.

"Freya! What are you doing?"

The relatives' glances darted between us.

Helen's face flushed between a pale white and a furious red. When she saw me walking out, she let out a sharp, sarcastic snort.

"Uneducated and uncultured! Don't you dare chase after her, Skylar. A daughter-in-law like that needs to be taught some discipline!"

Behind me, I heard Skylar's hesitant footsteps stop at the door.

The snow fell heavily.

By the time I finally made it home, I was shivering violently from the freezing cold.

Mom and Dad already had dinner ready. When they noticed the distressed look on my face, they anxiously asked what had happened.

After I explained the ordeal, Dad sat in silence and downed a glass of beer. "You need to reconsider this marriage carefully, Freya."

"He's right," Mom said with a sigh. "I don't care if the man you marry is wealthy or not; I just want him to truly love you.

"It's completely fine if he's a little poor. What matters most is that he doesn't play psychological games with you or make you suffer."

That night, I lay in bed and stared at the photos of us in my album. A bitter, heavy feeling settled in my chest.

Two years ago, I was hospitalized for sudden acute appendicitis. Skylar had stayed by my bedside for days on end, with dark circles under his eyes and stubble under his chin as he gently fed me soup.

He used to remember all anniversaries in our relationship and constantly planned secret surprises for me.

We had joined the company at the same time. During our initial prohibition period, his monthly pay was only 2,000 dollars, yet he had willingly spent 1,800 dollars buying me a necklace.

When I felt bad about him spending so much money, he solemnly told me, "You deserve the very best, Freya."

When had he started to change?"

Two days later, there was a loud pounding on my front door.Helen had completely lost her former arrogance. She looked as though she had aged ten years, while her hair was gray and disheveled. The moment she saw me, she dropped onto her knees with a loud thud."Freya! Freya, please… I'm begging you!"Clutching a formal settlement and waiver form, she burst into tears. "Everything was Skylar's fault! I was a terrible mom, but he just made a terrible mistake in the heat of the moment! He's only in his 20s; he can't go to prison!"As long as you sign this waiver and tell them you two were just joking around as a couple, he'll be fine!"Freya, for the sake of his being my only son, please have pity on me—""Pity on you?" I cut her off. Then, I coldly snapped back, "When you and Skylar schemed and demanded money from me, why didn't you stop to think about the consequences? It's too late to regret it now."Helen froze, while I continued, "What Skylar did was a crime, not a joke or p

I briefly pondered over Skylar's request, then agreed. "Sure.""Let's meet tonight at 8:00 pm at the textile factory on the west side of town. You used to love that barbecue place, right? We'll go there tonight."After hanging up, I let out a cold laugh.Did Skylar really think I was stupid? The west side textile factory had gone bankrupt for two years, and the barbecue place had moved out ages ago.The location was remote and deserted without security cameras. Who would choose a place like that for a sincere apology? His real intentions were practically written over his face.A leopard couldn't change its spots, and since Skylar wanted to set up a trap for me, I would make sure he gave up for good. Before leaving, I clipped a miniature voice recorder inside my collar and shared my live location with Sadie. Then, I scheduled an emergency text message to the cops and slipped a can of pepper spray into my pocket.I wanted to see what stunt the desperate Skylar could pull.…Soo

The commotion drew a large crowd of passersby, who stopped to watch and whisper among themselves. Someone walking by asked, "What's going on here? How much does he owe?"Skylar's relatives all started chiming in at once, creating a massive uproar. As fate would have it, this happened right when executives and the CEO from corporate headquarters arrived for an inspection. In the office, the branch manager slammed his mug down in a fit of rage. "Tell the HR department that Skylar is fired!"Colleagues whispered to ask me if the rumors online were true."Of course, they're true!"The moment they heard that, they started cursing Skylar indignantly."He's unbelievable!""Seriously shameless! I worked with him for years and never realized he was such a scumbag!""Damn. Thank god you two didn't get married, or he would have ruined your life."I was secretly relieved and grateful for this incident, too. Otherwise, there was no telling what kind of chaotic, miserable life I would ha

I let out a cold laugh.Under Alisa's comment, I uploaded screenshots of my chat history with Skylar, where he claimed all his money was locked in fixed deposits, alongside receipts for the limited-edition sneakers and luxury watches I had bought him.I also pointed out her Chanel jacket."Skylar told me he was broke, but he turned around and sold the sneakers I gifted him on an online second-hand market just to buy you that Chanel jacket with my money. How are you not embarrassed?"Alisa went completely silent.Soon, she reaped what she sowed. Internet users roasted her so badly that she had to delete her account. But that was far from enough for me.Skylar was cheap, but he had never acted this insane. Why had he suddenly set his eyes on my year-end bonus? Why was he forcing me to hand over the money with such extreme urgency? Something definitely wasn't right.I immediately contacted a friend and had them investigate him.Soon, I received my answer. It turned out that Sky

Helen continued cursing, "You tried to scam money out of us before you even married into the Reynold family. And when you couldn't get it, you got Skylar arrested! You absolute slut!""Exactly!" Alisa echoed.Standing right beside Helen, she gritted her teeth and glared at me. "I've never seen anyone as vile as you, Freya. After seducing Skylar and scamming him for money and sex, now you're turning around and playing the victim."The two of them shouted and ranted, while the rest of the relatives joined in, pointing their fingers and shouting curses at me.They were so loud that neighbors from both the lower and upper floors started poking their heads out to watch the drama.Mom couldn't take it anymore. She stepped forward and snapped back at them, "Watch your mouths! It was Skylar who tried to blackmail Freya for money! Have you people completely lost your minds?""Oh, shut up, you old hag! Raising a bitch like her means you're no good either!" Alisa yelled curses and reached o

I made it home safely with Sadie's help.First thing the next morning, I went straight to the police station to file a report. When Skylar and I were brought face-to-face in the interrogation room, he still acted innocent and aggrieved."Officer, we're a couple," he shamelessly argued. "It's completely normal for couples to bicker and play jokes on each other."I was just trying to tease her a little. There's no way I'd actually blackmail or extort her."With that, he even reached out to take my hand."Freya, can you stop making a scene? Do we really need to bother the cops over something this small? You're just creating unnecessary trouble for them, aren't you?"Given our relationship status, the officer frowned.I quickly cut in before anyone could say anything, "This isn't just a petty conflict. It's extortion!"Skylar's expression darkened, but I ignored him and reached into my bag to pull out my phone, which I had paid someone to fix overnight. "I have proof.""That's en
