Winning Back the Wife

Cheating

The night before the SAT, I record a video call between my present self and my future self ten years from now. Except the line actually connects to my future self. "Did I make it into Crythoria University's joint bachelor's-master's program? Is Brielle still my best friend? "If everything went according to plan, I should be done with grad school by now and married to David, right? High school sweethearts tying the knot! "Maybe we even have a cute kid together? I've already picked out a nickname." I blush, letting my imagination run wild. But the moment David Barrett's name leaves my mouth, the future me flies into a rage. "David gave you disappearing ink pens so Brielle could become the top scorer in the city! You didn't get into Crythoria. You had to repeat your senior year. "David acted heartbroken and promised to make long-distance work. Then he turned right around, went public with Brielle at college, and became the couple everyone envies. "Felicity Fisher, you absolute idiot! You got cheated on and still thanked Brielle for taking care of your boyfriend!"

Chapter 1
The video call cut off right then.I stared at my reflection on the screen, completely stunned. For a second, I wasn't even sure if I'd just hallucinated the whole thing. After all, my boyfriend, David Barrett, and I grew up together. Since we were kids, we'd promised each other that we'd get into Crythoria University together. While I was lost in thought, David suddenly appeared behind me and tapped my shoulder. "Feli, the SAT is tomorrow. Why are you hiding out here slacking off instead of studying? If you don't make it into Crythoria, don't come crying to me.""As if!" I laughed and nudged him.I couldn't connect the young man standing in front of me with the scumbag my future self from ten years later described.I ended up laughing at myself inside.I hadn't even set foot in the exam room yet, and stress was already making me lose my mind. But the moment I sat down back in the classroom, David dropped a stationery pouch onto my desk."Figured you wouldn't get your stuff re

Chapter 2
When Brielle heard that, she raised an eyebrow at David in pure provocation. "Feli just adores me. What are you gonna do about it?"The two of them were like a powder keg waiting to blow, on the verge of starting another argument.Instead of stepping in to make peace like I used to, I just glanced down at my watch. "It's time. I'm heading in first."David and Brielle traded a look and stopped bickering right away.It turned out that they could get along just fine without me doing anything. When the SAT was over, I finally let out a long breath. My frayed nerves could relax at last.Right on cue, the class rep, Kian Walker, suggested in the group chat that we all go out for dinner to celebrate. After all, everyone would be going their separate ways after graduation, making it tough to gather like this again.Halfway through the meal, the biggest party animal in our class suddenly ordered a case of beer."We're all adults now. Having a little drink to celebrate isn't asking for

The air suddenly fell silent.Kian stared at David with wide, disbelieving eyes. "No way, David! You've kissed someone other than Felicity?""I haven't!" David's face flushed red as he instantly shot it down."The last woman I kissed was Feli, of course. I just didn't want to talk about something so private out in the open. Besides, Feli is shy. She can't handle hearing stuff like this."My heart sank.David lied again. We had never kissed at all. After that little incident, my mind kept drifting.Moments from the past played on a loop in my head. All the little details I'd deliberately overlooked suddenly snapped into sharp focus.Like how I never suffered from period cramps, yet David always kept ibuprofen stashed in his desk.Like how Brielle and I had matching thermoses on our desks. Mine held warm water, while Brielle's was filled with hot chocolate.Or how David brought two sets of breakfast every day. Mine was plain and bland, while Brielle's had variety every single

Chapter 4
David and I had planned this graduation trip ages ago.He flashed the travel itinerary in his hand at me. "I promise you won't have to worry about a single thing."I originally intended to talk things out with him after we got back from the trip, giving our past a proper closure.Yet when we arrived at the station, I saw Brielle standing there with her own suitcase."I'm just tagging along on your trip. Feli, you don't mind, right?"I stayed silent.David glanced at my face, then reprimanded her playfully, "Of course you'd leech off us. Feli and I are on a trip for two, and there's no room for a third wheel like you. Besides, I didn't buy a ticket for you."Those were his words, yet at the train station, I was the only one turned away because I didn't have a ticket.Brielle glared hard at David. "What's wrong with you? How could you forget to buy Feli's ticket?"David was dumbfounded too. "I thought Feli already bought hers herself.""You thought? What good is what you though

"What?" David took two disbelieving steps back. "That's impossible!"I sneered. "Tell me, what's so impossible about it?"Ever since entering high school, I had maintained the spot for rank one in the entire grade.Even the teachers said that as long as I performed normally on the SAT, Crythoria University was a done deal."Or are you disappointed Brielle didn't turn out to be the top scorer?" I asked.David's face drained of color, and he shook his head in a panic. "That's not what I meant.""I don't give a damn what you meant. Get out of the way. I'm going downstairs to dump the trash."I brushed off his hand and turned to walk downstairs.Perhaps eager to rush home and check his own scores, David didn't try to argue with me.That evening, classmates started popping up in the group chat one after another."Felicity, I saw you on the news!""Congrats, city top scorer!""I can say I was high school classmates with the top scorer now. That's some serious bragging rights!"A

Chapter 6
I heard David had already gone to the testing center to review his exam papers. They confirmed his score was completely accurate and that no one had swapped his papers.David was preparing to repeat the year and didn't even bother submitting his application choices.I wanted to say hello to his parents, but I held back, worried they'd think I was rubbing it in.Yet as I brushed past David, he suddenly reached out and grabbed my wrist. "Feli, I need to talk to you."With both our parents present, I gave him some courtesy and didn't embarrass him.He pulled me over beneath the fig tree outside our building.Standing a short distance away, my parents waved at me. "Feli, we'll wait for you right here."David looked at me with a complex expression. "Brielle only got a little over 600 on her SAT too.""Really? Sounds like your scores are quite the match. Repeating the year together or going to trade school together, and eventually getting married and having kids would make quite a r

Hearing the commotion, my parents immediately rushed over, surrounding me to protect me as we walked away."Mom, let's not have anything to do with David's family anymore. We pour our hearts out treating them well, but they might turn around and bite us in the back."As for Brielle, we're no longer friends. If you ever see her coming over to our place, just kick her out."Mom knew we'd had a falling out.Invitations to my college acceptance celebration were sent out everywhere. Even the security guard at the neighborhood gate got one. The only ones left out were David and Brielle. The classmates who came all knew that David and Brielle had only scored a little over 600 on their exams, so they were smart enough not to bring either of them up in front of me.Yet just as the party wound down and I'd seen off all the guests, David—who was supposed to be at school repeating the year—suddenly showed up.He was holding a bouquet of sky-blue roses in his arms. Before the SAT, I'd casua

Chapter 8
"Feli, one of your high school classmates is here to see you," Mrs. Brown said.Crythoria University started the semester the latest, so aside from a few students repeating the year, almost everyone else in class had already headed off to start college.Who would suddenly come looking for me at a time like this?I opened the door in confusion, only to be faced with Brielle's pitiful, tear-filled eyes. She reached out to grab my sleeve and dropped straight to her knees in front of me. "Feli, please save me! I messed up on the SAT, and my parents refuse to fund me to repeat the year."Please lend me some money! You know what my real level is! If you just let me take it one more time, I can definitely make it into college."It seemed like she still didn't know she'd used disappearing ink pens. She was fully convinced she'd simply flopped her SAT.I took two steps back and looked at her indifferently. "I'm just a student too. I don't have that kind of money, and I certainly can't he

The next time I saw David was during the summer break after my freshman year.I was carrying a watermelon upstairs to my apartment when he happened to be coming downstairs to throw out the trash.Perhaps because the year of repeating school had been so grueling, he looked significantly more haggard, though his eyes were remarkably bright."Feli…"Frowning, I cut him off. "Don't address me so intimately. I don't want anyone overhearing and getting the wrong idea."He pressed his lips together, instantly switching terms. "Felicity, my teacher said there's a really high chance I'll make it into Crythoria. On the day I report to campus, could you come to the school gates to meet me?"You're the only person I know at Crythoria. Also, I want to take one last photo with you."I paused.Being neighbors and close friends since childhood, David and I used to take a picture together every single year. The backdrop for the first 17 photos had always been the fig tree outside our apartment

Chapter 10
Fortunately, David was pulled back from the brink of death in the ICU.Unfortunately, the cutoff score for Crythoria University spiked that year. He missed the mark by just ten points. In the end, he settled for a top-tier university down south instead.During my junior year, when I brought my boyfriend, Javier Bishop, home, David happened to be moving out.His eyes lingered on my hand intertwined with Javier's for a few seconds before he asked naturally, "Your boyfriend?"I nodded, lacking any desire for small talk. While showing Javier around my bedroom and the photo wall of my childhood, he suddenly noticed a small dangling basket outside the window."Do you guys upstairs and downstairs usually communicate with this? That's pretty interesting."Opening the window, I found 17 photos resting inside the basket. There had been two copies of every photo. My set had already been shredded, so this was David's set.Ever since David and I fell out, this basket had never been lowered
