Chapter 2

Shirley
Lorenzo must have floored the gas pedal the whole way here.

He stared at the silver-plated Colt revolver gleaming coldly in its case, his eyes filled with a raw, naked greed.

"Sienna, my dear sister, this was grandfather's sidearm." He stroked the ivory grip. "Are you serious? You'd really let me touch this?"

"Brother, you made it. Here, see how it feels." I gave Lorenzo's shoulder a small push and held the gun case out to him.

The moment Lorenzo's hand closed around the grip and he felt its heavy weight, his eyes lit up.

He kept muttering to himself, "A masterpiece. A goddamn masterpiece."

Seeing how he couldn't put it down, and remembering the mangled state he was in during my past life, I pushed the gun into his hands.

"What's the catch, Sienna?" He was a bit stunned.

I smiled brightly. "It's yours, Lorenzo."

"Go and conquer that underground dueling ring. That old Glock of yours, the one that's always jamming, isn't worthy of the future Don of the Moretti family."

Lorenzo looked a little embarrassed, but his hand never stopped stroking the weapon.

"This was your inheritance. It doesn't seem right for you to give it to me."

"We're family. No need to be so formal."

"Besides, a gun like this belongs in the hands of a true warrior, doesn't it?"

Only then did he accept my offer, tucking the legendary revolver into his waistband and leaving in high spirits.

I watched his back disappear into the night and let out a long breath.

The new gun was perfectly maintained, its mechanics flawless. It wouldn't jam this time.

However, fate is a gambler with a sick sense of humor.

Just two hours later, an emergency call from the family's private hospital shattered the silence of the night.

"Is this Miss Sienna? Your brother was just in an accident at the dueling ring. Please come immediately."

"Impossible." The whiskey glass in my hand froze mid-air. "That was grandfather's gun. It's flawless."

"Please come at once. The situation is... extremely critical."

When I arrived at the hospital, my head spun. I didn't understand. Why was Lorenzo still hurt? I had stopped him from using that piece of junk, so how could there be another accident?

"What happened to my brother?" I asked anxiously.

The sharp crack of a slap echoed.

My sister-in-law, Sofia, her hair a mess, heard my voice and charged at me like a madwoman. "It was you! You're the curse that killed him!"

Several bodyguards struggled to pull her away, but she continued to scream hysterically.

"If Lorenzo hadn't taken that legendary pistol, he never would have aimed for a deathmatch of that level! You baited him into a death match!"

"He doesn't have our grandfather's skills as a marksman! He took a superior weapon and got himself killed on the draw! You did this on purpose!"

I stood frozen, a ringing in my ears.

The attending doctor took off his blood-soaked gloves and walked over, his expression grim.

"As the young madam said... the young master was too reliant on the gun's power. He was a half second too slow on the draw, and his opponent put a bullet straight through his heart."

"He was covered in blood, his face unrecognizable. We were only able to identify Lorenzo because of the revolver he was still clutching, the one engraved with the family crest."

"With his old gun, he never would have dared to take that bet. At worst, he would have gotten beaten and thrown out, but he'd still be alive..."

The world spun around me, and I slowly slid down the cold wall to the floor.

I thought that by keeping my brother from using his old, broken gun, I could save him.

But now, because I had insisted he have the best weapon, he had been shot and killed on the spot.

No matter what I chose, Lorenzo was destined to fall in a pool of his own blood in that duel.

Was I too arrogant? Had I personally sent my brother to his death a second time?

A heavy hand rested on my shoulder. Even now, my father maintained the stern authority of the Don.

"This isn't your fault, Sienna. You only wanted the best for him."

My mother pulled me into her arms, comforting me. "Don't cry, baby. The best doctors are all here. Lorenzo is strong, he'll pull through."

I sobbed in my mother's arms, completely broken.

Afraid I would drown in guilt, my parents took care of me day and night, constantly checking on how I was doing.

I felt the warmth of my family, and my mood gradually began to improve.

I suddenly remembered that this was how it was in my last life, too. The phone was about to warn me to be wary of my parents' actions.

I didn't even press the answer button, but the call connected automatically.

"Sienna, I'm heartbroken about Lorenzo's injury too, but this is not your fault."

"Trust me, don't drink that wine. They've drugged it. They're going to strap you to an operating table and cut out your heart for that good-for-nothing brother of yours."

Agent Miller spoke into her radio, her voice calm. "Control, did you get confirmation?""The complete evidence package implicating the Moretti family in first-degree murder and illegal organ trafficking has been uploaded and secured."Outside the warehouse, police sirens suddenly tore through the night, and the flashing red and blue lights sliced the darkness to ribbons.Lorenzo's legs went weak, and he cowered behind his mother like a giant baby. "Mamma, what do we do? The FBI is everywhere!"My mother's face was ashen. She tried to maintain the composure of a matriarch, but her trembling hands betrayed her.Sofia opened her mouth to argue, but her phone began to vibrate violently. It was her father, another powerful player in the underworld. She answered, her hand shaking. The phone was on speaker, and his roar echoed through the warehouse:"You're cut off! The family is done with you. Don't even think about calling me to bail you out. You're on your own!"The call ended. Sofia's fac

My mother smoothed Lorenzo's collar, her eyes admiring him not as a son who had just faked his death, but as a priceless treasure."So what if you know the truth?" She turned to me, her tone matter-of-fact. "In the Moretti family, the heir is the future.""Lorenzo had to go into hiding, all to accommodate your little drama." My so-called mother patted Lorenzo's hand. "You've been through so much, my poor boy."I suppressed the nausea rising in my throat and turned to Sofia, who stood nearby with her arms crossed and a smirk on her face."And that genetic test report? The one that concluded an 'impure bloodline' caused the fatal rejection."Sofia raised an eyebrow, tapping a finger with a crimson-painted nail in the air."Oh, that? Just swap the sample with one from someone with an actual blood impurity when the family doctor isn't looking. Suddenly, the perfect Moretti genes are trash.""Watching you break down under all that 'guilt' was just too entertaining.""So it was you." I stare

Kate took my hand and looked at me sincerely."Tainted blood, an explosion... a series of events involving too many people. The logistics alone make it nearly impossible for one person. There has to be more to this story, right?"Only then did I let down my guard, sharing everything that had happened since I received the gun.As I recounted the story, her expression shifted. She met the tale of the mysterious phone call with shock and skepticism. But when I mentioned Lorenzo's "accident" at the duel, she merely raised an eyebrow, as if such things were commonplace in a mafia family. But when I described the tearing pain in my lower back and the chronic rejection symptoms after the "blood donation," her professional calm shattered."That wasn't a blood transfusion, and it certainly wasn't a genetic rejection," Kate's voice was low and chilled. My hand trembled, and a few drops of coffee spilled. When I mentioned my parents "dying" in the fake explosion to force my suicide, Kate took a

With the pretense gone, Sofia dropped her act.She calmly smoothed the hair the wind had tousled. "Well, since you know, I'll be blunt.""Sienna, if you don't jump, the family's accounts can't be settled, and Lorenzo's 'resurrection' can't be explained. Who's going to clean up this mess?""It's a small price to pay for the Moretti family."I looked at my silent parents."Is this what you want? To drive me to my death, then step over my corpse to secure your own interests?"I was still waiting for a single word of explanation, or even just a flicker of remorse.Don Luciano finally lifted his eyes. The eyes I once saw as my sanctuary now held only cold calculation."The honor of the family is paramount.""Sienna, your reputation is in ruins. Your survival would only bring the family shame."My mother stepped forward, her posture as elegant as a matriarch's, but her words were colder than venom."Principessa, don't be so willful.""Why can't you just do as you're told and jump for the hon

Sofia shrieked, her voice shrill and piercing, like a cornered cat."Are you high? Or are you just seeing things? If you want to jump, then jump! What's it got to do with me?""You're panicking, Sofia."I closed in on her, step by step, my voice like ice."This string of humiliations, the public shaming online, and now you, pushing me to the edge. You've been waiting for me to 'voluntarily' jump, haven't you?"Before, blinded by guilt, I let you manipulate me like a fool.Looking back now, you were always the first one to rub salt in the wound after every accident. You weren't venting your anger. You were pushing me to my death."Don't be ridiculous!" Sofia took a step back, her eyes darting nervously. "You killed Lorenzo, you blew up Don Luciano and Elena, and now you're trying to frame me for it?""Your existence is a disgrace to the Moretti family!"I had to stop myself from laughing at her pathetic attempt to bluff."Sofia, are my parents really dead? In my past life, I listened to the phone's manipulations and failed to check on my parents after Lorenzo's accident. That's why I wasn't there for them when the attack came.I shouldn't believe her words.I took my mother's hand and said, "Let's go back together."At dinner, the atmosphere was heavy because of Lorenzo, but my parents still kept putting food on my plate. They were clearly grieving, but they were far from hating me. In fact, they were constantly worried about my appetite.I thought back to the phone call and scoffed internally.See? My parents haven't done anything to me. I'm their beloved daughter, after all. The phone's misdirection is absurd. The next day, my parents told me they wanted to stay at the estate and not go anywhere. I was about to agree when the image from my past life flooded my mind: rival assassins storming the estate and slaughtering my parents. There was only one way to prevent that tragedy from happening."Father, Mother...
