The space between them felt smaller because of how familiar his silence had become.

“Don’t even think about it,” Clara said quickly, pointing at him like she was issuing a warning. Her voice carried that mix of awareness that he always managed to trigger in her.

“If you come near me, I will jump out of this jet in midair."

Familiar flicker of amusement lingered in his eyes. “Someone planning to jump out of a jet usually isn’t sitting comfortably on the bed,” he replied evenly.

Logan's hand shot out fast in the dark. His fingers closed tight around the nurse's wrist just as her foot slipped completely over the edge. He pulled with all his strength. The sudden jerk brought her forward but the force sent both of them backward. They fell hard onto the cold rooftop floor. Their backs hit the hard surface at the same time. The impact knocked the air from Logan's lungs. The nurse landed beside him. She lay there gasping, her chest rose and fell like she had run for miles without stopping. The stars above them looked cold and far away. She stayed on the ground for a long moment. Her body shook all over. She breathed like an animal that had just escaped the hunter's bullet. Short, desperate gasps came from her mouth. Sweat covered her face and neck. Her hands pressed flat against the floor as if she still felt herself falling into nothing.Logan lay there too. He felt the rough surface under him and the night wind on his skin. The fear in her eyes stayed burned in

Logan drove down the quiet road with his hands tight on the wheel. The hospital lights grew bigger in the distance. He pressed harder on the gas. The engine sounded louder in the empty night but he did not care. He needed to see the truth for himself. He needed to hear it from the woman who had stood closest to Clara now. The words from the reservoir still turned inside his chest like something alive. Clara was his blood. His sister. And she still lay in that bed with no idea what waited for her.He pulled into the parking lot faster. The tires made a sharp sound against the ground. He cut the engine and sat there for a moment. His heart beat heavy in his ears. He pulled the hood of his jacket low over his face and adjusted the cap and nose mask. Then he stepped out into the cool air and walked toward the entrance like any other visitor who belonged there. But his steps felt heavier. Every shadow in the hall made him turn his face away. Two men moved ahead of him toward the private

For a moment, he could only stare at the older man. The words echoed inside his head, refusing to settle. His fingers curled into his palms while his heartbeat pounded so loudly it drowned everything else.Clara.The name hit him like a blow he never saw coming. His sister. The person he had watched suffer for years."I knew this is hard to believe but it's the truth. A sample mix somewhere in the process. Nobody did it on purpose. She was also brought into the hospital around that time. Her blood got mixed up without anyone realizing it. And her blood matched the Rothwell line at a level that only made sense if she carried a real biological connection to your family."Logan lowered his head. His hands came up and pressed against the top of his skull. He sat like that for a statue. The pressure of his own hands against his head matched the pressure of the words settling inside him.He raised his head. "You should have told me," he said. His voice had changed. The flat cold gave way to

Grayson froze on his seat. The fishing rod shifted slightly against his knee. His face slowly lost color as he stared at Logan. Sophia? Same sister who always acted as though board meetings bored her to death. One who behaved as if shopping trips mattered more than company shares. The same girl who spent years convincing everyone she had no interest in power. The older man's throat tightened. "No... it can't be...Are you sure about this" The words escaped before he could stop them. Logan lowered his head. "You know we have full equipments for tracking at the basement. I wanted her to be wrong as well. I mixed up the photograph with someone else and asked again. I showed her different angles. I asked the same questions in different ways. Every single time she pointed at Sophia."The shock remained written across the older man's face. Then something worse slowly appeared. Understanding. His eyes returned to Logan and a terrible realization settled between them. "Does that mean..."

The elevator doors slid shut behind Jeffery and Logan. Neither man spoke as the elevator descended through the floors. They left the hospital through a private exit and entered the waiting car. Logan started the engine and pulled away from the building. Streetlights reflected across the windows while traffic moved steadily around them.Jeffery sat in the back seat with one arm resting against the door. His gaze remained fixed on the passing city lights for several minutes before he finally spoke."How far have you gotten with the number?"Logan glanced at the rearview mirror."The number from Clara's organization," Jeffery added."We're still working on it sir" Logan replied. "The registered information belongs to a dead man."Jeffery's eyes narrowed slightly. "A dead man?"Logan nodded while keeping his attention on the road."He died years ago. I'm heading to verify a few things after I drop you off at the mansion. Something about the records doesn't add up."Jeffery leaned back a

Jeffery sat in the back of the car with Sophia leaning on his shoulder. He kept his head low for a moment then spoke in a tired voice that carried through the small space.“I have to stop by somewhere important.”Sophia lifted her head slowly and looked at him with concern written across her face. “But we were just returning from the funeral,” she said. Her fingers stayed on his arm like she did not want to let go just yet. The black dress she wore still carried the smell of the cathedral incense.“I understand your concern Soph,” Jeffery replied softly. “I won’t stay long.” He told Logan to pull over at the next junction. The car stopped smoothly beside the sidewalk. Sophia stepped out and stood there watching the car drive away until it disappeared around the bend. She pulled out her phone and called her friend Emma to come pick her up. A small smile touched her lips once the car was completely gone from sight. She crossed her arms and waited under the street light.Back inside
