It pained me so much to know that Layland couldn't see just how strong and how brave he was for finally setting himself free from the shackles his parents had put on him. It's disheartening to witness how he felt so bad and how he felt so guilty about leaving when, in reality, that was the best decision he has ever made. It was so heartbreaking to see that he couldn't be really happy, all because he had to think about his parents, who didn't give even a single shit about him. But I can't blame him for that either. He's fought so hard and done everything he can to have his parents’ love and acceptance for years, and now, all of a sudden, that wasn't the case anymore. I'm sure he's probably wrapping his head around that fact. It's because of that that I haven't asked him about the details of what happened yet and what he was planning. We can stay here—he can stay here in my place for as long as he wants without questions asked.

Thankfully, the injuries that I got weren't that extreme. I was just given medications for the pain and told to get plenty of rest. I was also told that if ever my pain worsened, I needed to go back to the hospital. But I don't think that's going to happen. It's not like this was the first time this happened. And all the times I got beaten up by my father, it all just turned out like this—going to the hospital, being given some medicines, and then being told to take a rest. Obviously, my father wasn't stupid enough to cause enough damage to my body that will potentially lead to a scandal, which would also eventually lead again to them—to him. He didn't want anything that'll ruin his image. After getting out of the hospital, we headed to a grocery store nearby that opens for twenty-four hours. I tried to come out of the car and join Gunner at the grocery store, but he didn't allow me to do so. He told me, and in a very strict and serious way, that I should not move too much and that I

"Your place?" Layland asked after I parked my car."Yep. Come on." Without waiting for him, I got out of my car and went to open the door to the passenger seat and took out Layland's suitcases. Layland did the same to get his bag.I started walking, going inside the building, and Layland followed me without saying anything. When we got inside my apartment, I let his suitcases stay still beside the couch, then I grabbed Layland by the hand because he was just standing still near the door as if he was afraid of coming inside, and practically forced him to sit with me, beside me on the couch. He was still holding his bag, even putting it on his lap, so I took it without his permission and put it on the other side of me. Layland frowned but said nothing about it.We did not speak. I continued to hold his hand while Layland looked like he was spacing out and bothered by whatever was going on inside his head. He couldn't even sit straight."Are you alright?" I finally asked him after a whil

To say that I was shocked after hearing what the host had said would be an understatement. So this wasn't just a normal party like Layland and I had expected. It was his and Stephanie's engagement party. My eyes immediately flew to where Layland was standing. He wasn't looking at me. In fact, he wasn't looking at anybody. His gaze might have been at the crowd, but I can tell that he was not really looking at them. He looked lost, dazed, and confused. And if I were in his position, I would be too.It was quite a while before Layland finally seemed to get out of the trance he was put in by that surprising announcement of his engagement. And once he did, his eyes immediately went to his parents, specifically to his mother. I couldn't hear nor could I read their lips to know what they were talking about, but I could already tell that Layland was questioning them. And based on the reaction on Layland's face, he did not get the answer that he wanted to hear. Not long after, Layland and his

‘Alright, everyone, let's hear it again! A big round of applause for the newly engaged couple, Layland Floros and Stephanie Abella!’That announcement of the host was what filled my head. I couldn’t think of anything other than that. Hell, I didn’t even know how long I just stood in the center of the middle stage, looking at everyone clapping but not really looking. Hearing, but not really hearing. It was only when I felt my sides being hit quite hard that I finally pulled myself out of my own head. I looked at the person that hit my side, which was my mother. She wasn’t looking at me because her eyes remained looking at the crowd, but I knew she felt the intense staring I was giving her. While smiling through gritted teeth and continuing not to look at me, my mother said, “Fix that fucking expression on your face, Layland. Smile to the fucking crowd.” She was not asking me; she was ordering me, and I fucking hate it. How could she be telling me that after what they were putting me th

"What do you think this party is about?" Gunner asked me while we were making our way to the hotel where the party will be held. As usual, he was the one driving, and I was in the passenger seat."I had no idea. It's probably a charity event or a business-related party as usual. Either way, I don't want to be in there. I'd still prefer to be locked in your room and spend the night with you," I said while leaning my head on the window, irritation filling my face. One of Gunner's hands let go of the wheel to take hold of my hand. He squeezed it, glanced at me, and said, "And we'll exactly do that once we get home later. Making it up, remember?" He smiled and winked at me before getting his eyes to focus back on the road.I sighed. "Yeah. We'll make up for it," I said, forcing myself to be content with that and stop being frustrated.I swear I have been doing that—forcing myself to not be frustrated and disappointed at myself, at my parents, and at the situation we were in—since we got i
