Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
After I got my first paycheck out of college, I started looking for an apartment so I could finally move out, but Mom refused no matter what I said.

One night, she sat beside my bed while wiping away tears. She cried about how lonely she would be living alone.

Seeing her like that, I couldn't bring myself to leave, so I stayed home.

"Move out? Where would you move to? I can't believe how stubborn you've become. I thought I raised a good daughter. You ungrateful child!" After being stunned for a few seconds, she immediately started pointing at me and yelling.

I didn't even bother arguing with her. After putting my things away, I grabbed a few snacks I wanted to eat and sat at the dining table. I began indulging myself.

Once I was full, my mood improved a lot. I got my phone back, repaid Melinda, and scrolled on my phone in bed. I eventually fell asleep.

Early next morning, I woke up to loud voices all around me. The second I opened my eyes, I nearly had a heart attack.

A group of relatives was standing around my bed. They surrounded me like mourners at a funeral. It was as if they were about to carry me off any second.

"What are you all doing? Who said you could come into my room?"

I shot upright in bed and screamed.

"Well, look who finally woke up. You don't care about your poor mother at all. You could've gotten up early to help her in the kitchen."

My aunt, Daisy Anderson, said with a sarcastic snort.

I glanced at my phone. It was only eight in the morning.

I finally had a few days off and just wanted to sleep in for once. That plan was clearly ruined now.

"Get up already. Your mother's been cooking for two hours." My aunt-in-law, Mary Ziegler, yanked my blanket away.

"Why do you even need this much makeup? You can't possibly use all of it. I'll just take these bottles.

"And these clothes in your closet are way too revealing. People would think you work at a nightclub."

The entire group of people rummaged through my room. They pointed at my belongings and criticized me for just about everything. They were like looters raiding a house.

"What are you doing in my room? Put that down!" I shouted.

"Why are you yelling? You have such a bad temper. Your mother specifically asked us to come talk some sense into you. You seriously can't be left unchecked anymore."

My heart sank. My mind was a mess.

I honestly didn't know what I had done so wrong for Mom to torment me like this. At that moment, I genuinely felt like I would rather she stab me to death than keep torturing me this way.

"I need to get changed. Get out," I said while trying to suppress my anger.

"We're all family. Just get changed. What's there to hide?"

I glanced in the direction of the bedroom door. It was wide open. My uncle, Jack Ziegler, and my cousin, Ben Ziegler, were sitting out there in plain view. Once they looked up, they'd be able to see everything. I couldn't possibly get changed like this.

"Get out! How am I supposed to get changed with all of you standing here?" I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at them.

"Such a bad temper. Fine, fine, we're leaving."

Only after they walked out did I finally sigh in relief. I shut the door and had just pulled off my nightgown when the door suddenly swung open behind me.

"Why are you keeping your door closed? We're all family. What are you trying to hide from us? Why must you close the door?" Mom stood by the door and fumed.

Perhaps it was my imagination, but a cold draft swept across my bare upper body. It made me shiver instantly.

Mom's attending physician found me and asked whether we wanted to proceed with surgery. If we did, we'd need to prepare at least 15 grand.Mom's condition could also be managed conservatively. It depended on what the family chose.Something this serious wasn't my decision to make.I told the doctor to ask Mom directly."Why are you even asking? Of course I want the surgery!" Mom exclaimed without even thinking about it."There are risks to surgery. I think the conservative treatment is better. Honestly, this illness was probably caused by all those supplements you kept taking. If you'd stopped taking them, you'd probably have been fine," I said."Didn't you hear what the doctor said? I can have a full recovery with the surgery! If I don't do it, it'll relapse!" The moment her own life was involved, she refused to back down even an inch."But surgery has risks too. What if you hemorrhage and die on the operating table? Conservative treatment sounds safer to me."And who told you

For once, Mom wasn't making a scene, and my mood improved quite a bit. I took the glass of milk from her and drank it in one go. That night, I slept incredibly well.At some point, something started to feel wrong in my sleep. I could hear my alarm blaring nonstop next to me, but my eyelids felt glued shut. I just couldn't open my eyes. This business trip was very important to me. I had to get up.Through sheer willpower, I finally managed to open my eyes. I glanced at my phone and saw the time. It was as if I might collapse at any moment.Trying to wake myself up, I quickly made a cup of coffee, but it didn't help at all. With no time to think about it, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door, only for Mom to block the entrance."Look how exhausted you are. I turned around just in time to see a car speeding toward Mom. The screech of brakes ripped echoed through the air. I froze on the spot, and my mind went blank.Thankfully, the driver reacted quickly and spun the wheel hard. He managed to steer the car away from her.Mom collapsed onto the ground. The driver jumped out of the car and pointed at her furiously."Are you insane, old lady? Even if you have a death wish, don't drag me into it!""Ouch! My leg hurts so bad! You need to compensate me!" Mom reached for her leg and started shouting. The driver looked furious. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're the one trying to scam me, and now you want my money? I'm calling the police. Let them deal with this!"The second she heard he was going to call the police, she panicked. She knew perfectly well that she was the one at fault. If the police came, she wouldn't gain anything from it."Forget it, forget it. I won't argue with you. Just leave."Shanice, hurry up and call an ambula

Back then, every time she brought up my dad, I would immediately soften. When I was in sixth grade, my father died in a car accident. According to Mom, he had gone out driving late at night while exhausted and crashed.A few years later, some relatives and family friends felt sorry for her living alone and tried introducing her to new men. She turned all of them down. Her reason was always the same. "I still have a daughter to raise. I'm happy as long as I can raise her."At first, hearing those words moved me deeply. But the second we got home, she would start sighing dramatically."It's all because of you. People introduced me to rich men with luxury cars, and I turned them all down. If it weren't for you, I would've been living a good life by now."Hearing that as a child shook me to my core. I was terrified. The guilt nearly crushed me. All I could do was study hard and hope that one day I could give Mom a better life. Now that I think about it, those words were just another

The relatives all turned to look in our direction. I froze for several seconds before finally snapping back to reality and grabbing clothes to cover myself."Mom, are you insane? I was changing! There are men outside!"No matter how good of a temper I had, I couldn't possibly tolerate this. I broke down and started screaming."Oh, you were changing? You should've said so earlier. How was I supposed to know?"Why are you making such a big deal out of it? They're relatives. So what if they saw you? It's not like you stand to lose anything."I stormed forward and pushed her out of the room. "Evonne Ziegler, I finally understand now. You're sick in the head!"This time, I directly called her by her full name before slamming the door and locking it."Hey! Shanice Xander, how dare you insult your mother? Open this door right now and apologize to her!" Jack shouted as he ran forward and pounded hard on the door. The rest of the relatives soon joined in. They were kicking and slamming a
