Penulis: Perfect Timing

Chapter 1

Penulis: Perfect Timing
I stared coldly at the road ahead, gripped the steering wheel, and made a sudden U-turn back to the grocery store.

My mom, Evonne Ziegler, frowned at me when she saw that. "Did you take the wrong exit? This isn't the way home."

"It's not wrong. You said the trip was pointless, didn't you? Then I'll go back and buy all the stuff we looked at so it won't be a wasted trip."

After saying that, I took several deep breaths to calm myself down. If I lost my temper and started speeding, that would be dangerous for everyone on the road.

Mom had always known exactly how to push my buttons.

When I was little, my teacher selected me to join the cheer squad for a performance during the school field day.

The day before the performance, my teacher specifically reminded everyone to wear white leather shoes and white socks.

All my shoes were black, so after school I asked Mom to take me shopping for a pair of white shoes.

After we got to the store, the sales assistant immediately brought out a pair of white leather shoes for me to try on after hearing what I needed.

I thought the shoes were decent. The size was just right, and they ticked all the boxes, but Mom stood where she was and started frowning at me.

My heart sank. I thought maybe she felt they were too expensive, so I quietly took them off and started looking through the clearance section instead.

"Try these instead. White shoes get dirty too easily. Black is better."

After Mom saw me take off the shoes, she picked up a pair of black leather shoes and placed them in front of me.

"Our teacher said everyone has to wear white," I explained.

"White stains too easily. You'll ruin them in minutes. Just listen to me and get the black shoes. Black looks good too." It was like she hadn't heard a word I said. She kept insisting on getting me to try the black shoes.

"My teacher said they have to be white! If I wear black, I won't be allowed onstage!" I raised my voice.

"What do you mean? Why must it be white? I think you're making that up. Black or white, it's all the same. Get the black ones."

I nearly choked on my frustration.

The sales assistant quickly stepped in after sensing the tension. "These may be white, but they're pretty stain-resistant. If they get dirty, you can just wipe them with a wet cloth. It's very convenient."

While speaking, she began demonstrating it for us.

Mom looked at the shoes for several long seconds without speaking. I quietly backed away and found a discounted pair of white leather shoes in the clearance section. It only cost 30 bucks. I told her those would work too.

She still wasn't satisfied. Instead, she grabbed a pair of white sneakers from another shelf. "You run around at school all day. Leather shoes aren't safe. Sneakers are better. Kids your age are still growing, so you should wear sneakers that provide more support."

That was the moment I completely gave up. I understood then that there was no chance I was leaving with white leather shoes.

Even the sales assistant looked at me with sympathy. I was numb with embarrassment. I refused to even look at the sneakers.

"Forget it. I don't want any shoes. Let's just go."

"You're impossible. I came all this way just to buy you shoes, but you don't want them now. There's no pleasing you," Mom snapped before turning around and walking out of the store.

The next day, since I didn't have white leather shoes, my teacher removed me from the cheer squad.

Things like this happened constantly throughout my twenty-something years of life.

Mom's attending physician found me and asked whether we wanted to proceed with surgery. If we did, we'd need to prepare at least 15 grand.Mom's condition could also be managed conservatively. It depended on what the family chose.Something this serious wasn't my decision to make.I told the doctor to ask Mom directly."Why are you even asking? Of course I want the surgery!" Mom exclaimed without even thinking about it."There are risks to surgery. I think the conservative treatment is better. Honestly, this illness was probably caused by all those supplements you kept taking. If you'd stopped taking them, you'd probably have been fine," I said."Didn't you hear what the doctor said? I can have a full recovery with the surgery! If I don't do it, it'll relapse!" The moment her own life was involved, she refused to back down even an inch."But surgery has risks too. What if you hemorrhage and die on the operating table? Conservative treatment sounds safer to me."And who told you

I would go far away and sever the invisible cord still tying us together.Only then could I finally have a better life.Coincidentally, the company had an assignment opening in another city that would last several years. Most of my coworkers were already married or settled down and couldn't accept the transfer,so I volunteered. My supervisor agreed immediately.I found a new apartment in the new city. For once, Mom wasn't making a scene, and my mood improved quite a bit. I took the glass of milk from her and drank it in one go. That night, I slept incredibly well.At some point, something started to feel wrong in my sleep. I could hear my alarm blaring nonstop next to me, but my eyelids felt glued shut. I just couldn't open my eyes. This business trip was very important to me. I had to get up.Through sheer willpower, I finally managed to open my eyes. I glanced at my phone and saw the time. I actually woke up thirty minutes later than I had planned. There was no time for breakfast anymore. I had to leave for the airport immediately. But the second I got out of bed, my entire body felt weak. It was as if I might collapse at any moment.Trying to wake myself up, I quickly made a cup of coffee, but it didn't help at all. With no time to think about it, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door, only for Mom to block the entrance."Look how exhausted you are. Where do you t

I turned around just in time to see a car speeding toward Mom. The screech of brakes ripped echoed through the air. I froze on the spot, and my mind went blank.Thankfully, the driver reacted quickly and spun the wheel hard. He managed to steer the car away from her.Mom collapsed onto the ground. The driver jumped out of the car and pointed at her furiously."Are you insane, old lady? Even if you have a death wish, don't drag me into it!""Ouch! My leg hurts so bad! You need to compensate me!" Mom reached for her leg and started shouting. The driver looked furious. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're the one trying to scam me, and now you want my money? I'm calling the police. Let them deal with this!"The second she heard he was going to call the police, she panicked. She knew perfectly well that she was the one at fault. If the police came, she wouldn't gain anything from it."Forget it, forget it. I won't argue with you. Just leave."Shanice, hurry up and call an ambula

Back then, every time she brought up my dad, I would immediately soften. When I was in sixth grade, my father died in a car accident. According to Mom, he had gone out driving late at night while exhausted and crashed.A few years later, some relatives and family friends felt sorry for her living alone and tried introducing her to new men. She turned all of them down. Her reason was always the same. "I still have a daughter to raise. I'm happy as long as I can raise her."At first, hearing those words moved me deeply. But the second we got home, she would start sighing dramatically."It's all because of you. People introduced me to rich men with luxury cars, and I turned them all down. If it weren't for you, I would've been living a good life by now."Hearing that as a child shook me to my core. I was terrified. The guilt nearly crushed me. All I could do was study hard and hope that one day I could give Mom a better life. Now that I think about it, those words were just another

The relatives all turned to look in our direction. I froze for several seconds before finally snapping back to reality and grabbing clothes to cover myself."Mom, are you insane? I was changing! There are men outside!"No matter how good of a temper I had, I couldn't possibly tolerate this. I broke down and started screaming."Oh, you were changing? You should've said so earlier. How was I supposed to know?"Why are you making such a big deal out of it? They're relatives. So what if they saw you? It's not like you stand to lose anything."I stormed forward and pushed her out of the room. "Evonne Ziegler, I finally understand now. You're sick in the head!"This time, I directly called her by her full name before slamming the door and locking it."Hey! Shanice Xander, how dare you insult your mother? Open this door right now and apologize to her!" Jack shouted as he ran forward and pounded hard on the door. The rest of the relatives soon joined in. They were kicking and slamming a
