Chapter 3

Penulis: Perfect Timing
The customers waiting behind me were already getting impatient. They told me to hurry up and stop holding up the line. I quickly apologized. My mind went blank.

"Sorry, I'm so sorry. My mom's missing, and my phone's with her, so I can't pay. You can go ahead first."

I hurriedly shoved all the scanned items back into the cart. I was prepared to go look for her.

A store employee immediately stepped forward and blocked my path. "What are you doing? You can't leave without paying."

The sight of the employee finally snapped me back to reality. I grabbed her hand and said, "My mom disappeared. Please help me find her."

They brought me to the manager's office, where the staff made three or four announcements over the intercom, but Mom still didn't show up.

Left with no other choice, I went to the security office to check the surveillance footage. That's when I finally found out where she'd gone.

With my purse in her hand, she kept walking all the way back toward the entrance. She actually left the grocery store through the front doors.

I immediately felt furious. I knew she did it on purpose. She just wanted to embarrass me.

My face turned red. Suddenly, it felt humiliating to even look at all the food piled inside the cart.

If this had happened in the past, I probably would have given in. But this time, I wouldn't let her have her way no matter what. I was leaving with these groceries one way or another.

I borrowed an employee's phone and called my best friend, Melinda Graham. I asked her to come pick me up at the grocery store.

She happened to be shopping nearby and arrived quickly. She paid for everything for me.

I loaded all the groceries into the trunk. Thankfully, I still had my car keys on me, so at least I could drive home.

When I got back, Mom was already sitting on the couch. She looked at me smugly. "Oh, your'e back? I told you not to buy those things, but you wouldn't listen. I had to come home first."

She deliberately brushed past the fact that she had abandoned me at the grocery store.

I was furious, so I ignored her completely and carried the three heavy bags of groceries into the house.

"How did you buy all that? Your phone was with me!"

She saw me carrying all that stuff and immediately sprang up from the couch. The calm expression on her face vanished.

"So you really did do it on purpose. You took my phone because you wanted to humiliate me.

"But let me make one thing clear. It won't work anymore. I'm an adult now. You can't control me anymore."

I stared directly into her eyes as I spoke each word slowly and clearly.

"H-How can you say that to your mother? I'm doing this for your own good. None of that food is good for you, but you insist on arguing with me over it.

"You're my only child. Why would I ever want to hurt you? Return all this stuff. You really can't eat it. I mean it."

Even after I brought everything home, she still refused to give up. She still wanted me to return it all.

"Enough!" I finally snapped and shouted at the top of my lungs.

"What is wrong with you? I'm spending my own money. What does any of this have to do with you? If you keep trying to control me, I'll move out permanently. Don't make me go that far."

  • Gaslit By My Mom   Chapter 10

Mom's attending physician found me and asked whether we wanted to proceed with surgery. If we did, we'd need to prepare at least 15 grand.Mom's condition could also be managed conservatively. It depended on what the family chose.Something this serious wasn't my decision to make.I told the doctor to ask Mom directly."Why are you even asking? Of course I want the surgery!" Mom exclaimed without even thinking about it."There are risks to surgery. I think the conservative treatment is better. Honestly, this illness was probably caused by all those supplements you kept taking. If you'd stopped taking them, you'd probably have been fine," I said."Didn't you hear what the doctor said? I can have a full recovery with the surgery! If I don't do it, it'll relapse!" The moment her own life was involved, she refused to back down even an inch."But surgery has risks too. What if you hemorrhage and die on the operating table? Conservative treatment sounds safer to me."And who told you

Most of my coworkers were already married or settled down and couldn't accept the transfer,so I volunteered. My supervisor agreed immediately.I found a new apartment in the new city. For once, Mom wasn't making a scene, and my mood improved quite a bit. I took the glass of milk from her and drank it in one go. That night, I slept incredibly well.At some point, something started to feel wrong in my sleep. I could hear my alarm blaring nonstop next to me, but my eyelids felt glued shut. I just couldn't open my eyes. This business trip was very important to me. I had to get up.Through sheer willpower, I finally managed to open my eyes. I glanced at my phone and saw the time. I actually woke up thirty minutes later than I had planned. There was no time for breakfast anymore. I had to leave for the airport immediately. But the second I got out of bed, my entire body felt weak. It was as if I might collapse at any moment.Trying to wake myself up, I quickly made a cup of coffee, but it didn't help at all. With no time to think about it, I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door, only for Mom to block the entrance."Look how exhausted you are. I turned around just in time to see a car speeding toward Mom. The screech of brakes ripped echoed through the air. I froze on the spot, and my mind went blank.Thankfully, the driver reacted quickly and spun the wheel hard. He managed to steer the car away from her.Mom collapsed onto the ground. The driver jumped out of the car and pointed at her furiously."Are you insane, old lady? Even if you have a death wish, don't drag me into it!""Ouch! My leg hurts so bad! You need to compensate me!" Mom reached for her leg and started shouting. The driver looked furious. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're the one trying to scam me, and now you want my money? I'm calling the police. Let them deal with this!"The second she heard he was going to call the police, she panicked. She knew perfectly well that she was the one at fault. If the police came, she wouldn't gain anything from it."Forget it, forget it. I won't argue with you. Just leave."Shanice, hurry up and call an ambula

Back then, every time she brought up my dad, I would immediately soften. When I was in sixth grade, my father died in a car accident. According to Mom, he had gone out driving late at night while exhausted and crashed.A few years later, some relatives and family friends felt sorry for her living alone and tried introducing her to new men. She turned all of them down. Her reason was always the same. "I still have a daughter to raise. I'm happy as long as I can raise her."At first, hearing those words moved me deeply. But the second we got home, she would start sighing dramatically."It's all because of you. People introduced me to rich men with luxury cars, and I turned them all down. If it weren't for you, I would've been living a good life by now."Hearing that as a child shook me to my core. I was terrified. The guilt nearly crushed me. All I could do was study hard and hope that one day I could give Mom a better life. Now that I think about it, those words were just another

The relatives all turned to look in our direction. I froze for several seconds before finally snapping back to reality and grabbing clothes to cover myself."Mom, are you insane? I was changing! There are men outside!"No matter how good of a temper I had, I couldn't possibly tolerate this. I broke down and started screaming."Oh, you were changing? You should've said so earlier. How was I supposed to know?"Why are you making such a big deal out of it? They're relatives. So what if they saw you? It's not like you stand to lose anything."I stormed forward and pushed her out of the room. "Evonne Ziegler, I finally understand now. You're sick in the head!"This time, I directly called her by her full name before slamming the door and locking it."Hey! Shanice Xander, how dare you insult your mother? Open this door right now and apologize to her!" Jack shouted as he ran forward and pounded hard on the door. The rest of the relatives soon joined in. They were kicking and slamming a
