Chapter 5

Autor: Fortune Greens
I opened my eyes and stared blankly at the ceiling, unable to tell whether reality had become too absurd or if the dream had simply turned cruelly ironic.

She was pregnant. Five weeks along.

In a world where even I was about to disappear, who would be there to love and protect this little life that had arrived at such a time?

A bitter laugh escaped me. "I wouldn't exactly call that good news."

The nurse froze, caught off guard by my response.

"Sebastian! What are you talking about?"

The door opened, and Hallie strode into the room, barely containing her anger.

"That's your baby. Aren't you happy?"

But the moment she saw how pale I was, she stopped.

Her anger faded, replaced by a softer tone.

"We spent three years trying to have this baby. After everything we went through, we finally got pregnant. Why would you say something like that?"

Her words burned in my throat, and a bitter, mocking laugh escaped me.

She wasn't wrong. We had spent three whole years trying to have a child. I had endured every hardship, swallowed every bitterness, and forced myself to keep going even when the thought of intimacy had become enough to make me nauseous.

I had wanted this baby that badly. Because I had always believed that if the system eventually forced me to return to my original world, Hallie would be devastated.

At least she would have a child who shared my blood. Someone who could stay by her side after I was gone, so she wouldn't be left alone. And if it were a boy, even better. He could grow up and protect her in my place.

That was why, when Wyatt appeared—looking so much like me and claiming to be my son from twenty years in the future—I nearly cried with relief. I had genuinely believed that my greatest worry had been taken care of.

Only now did I realize how foolish I had been.

Maybe Hallie had simply grown tired of me, tired of the fact that I wasn't young anymore, and tired of my old-fashioned ways and my boring personality.

So, she found a younger imitation who looked like me and used the story of a "future son" to silence every suspicion I had.

I had spent three years desperately wanting a child for her sake. And all along, perhaps she had already found someone else she wanted instead.

Exhaustion washed over me, and I closed my eyes.

"I'm happy. Okay?"

Hallie didn't hear the emptiness in my voice.

Instead, she happily took my hand and placed it against her stomach.

"It's still so tiny right now. Once the baby starts growing, you'll be able to feel those little kicks."

I turned my face away and said nothing. What was there left to say? In just a few days, I would be gone. There was no way I would live long enough to feel that baby move.

Her phone began ringing incessantly.

Hallie hesitated for a moment before standing.

"Get some rest and take care of yourself. I'll come see you whenever I have time."

She paused at the door. "And remember to pick a name for the baby. I'm going to check whether you actually put some thought into it."

I smiled and nodded.

But the moment the hospital room door closed behind her, the smile disappeared.

I decided to let her anticipation grow. Let her enjoy every bit of happiness she thought was waiting for her. After all, the higher the hopes, the harder the fall.

Over the next few days, Hallie only came to see me once. She froze when she walked in and found me sorting through my belongings.

"What are you doing?"

I smiled and shrugged. "Nothing. Just organizing the things I want the baby to have."

She paused before stepping closer and leaning against me with a smile.

"What's the rush? Once the baby is born, we'll have plenty of time to figure everything out."

I sighed softly. "There won't be enough time."

Her phone rang again. She barely acknowledged me before hurrying out of the room.

After that, Hallie never came back.

Whenever I called, her assistant gave me the same excuse. "Mr. Castro, Ms. Larsen is extremely busy with work.

Meanwhile, entertainment headlines were plastered with one story after another about Hallie's love life.

"Larsen Group's Ice-Cold CEO Spotted on Private Date With Mystery Man—Couple Spends Ten Hours at Universal Studios, She Smiles Sweetly in His Arms."

"Finance World's 'Ice Queen' Exposed on Private Island Getaway—Kissing, Poolside Romance, and a Helicopter Pickup."

I glanced at the sensational headlines and let out a quiet laugh.

Two days remained, and my body had become frighteningly weak.

The sharp lines of my face had grown hollow. My cheekbones stood out beneath my skin, my eyes were deeply sunken, and even my wrists had become painfully thin.

The nurses handled me with extra care whenever they came in to change my dressings, afraid that even the slightest pressure might hurt me.

I didn't even have the strength to hate Hallie anymore.

Then, without warning, the hospital room door was violently thrown open.

Several men stormed inside.

Without a word, they grabbed me and hauled me to my feet.

"Mr. Castro, Ms. Larsen wants us to take you to a party."

They shoved me into a car and locked the doors.

I had no idea how much time had passed before the car finally stopped in front of a lavish hotel.

I was half-dragged, half-carried inside.

The lobby was brightly lit, almost painfully so. Balloons and streamers covered the walls, while enormous neon letters spelling "Happy Birthday" dominated the room.

Then several black SUVs pulled up behind us, one after another.

A group of intimidating men climbed out.

My heart sank as I knew something was wrong.

If Hallie had simply wanted to appease Wyatt, she never would have sent this many people to drag me here.

I swallowed and rasped out, "Why exactly am I here?"

Mikaela then took my hand. We turned to leave, but the woman seemed to lose what little strength she had left and stumbled after us. "Sebastian! I don't believe it… I don't believe you could have forgotten me completely! After everything that happened between us, how could you possibly—"I stopped but didn't turn around. "Things that can be forgotten were never important enough to begin with."With that, I tightened my grip on Mikaela's hand and walked away without looking back.Behind me, I heard hurried footsteps and the security guards' stern voices. "Miss, you need to leave."Then came the dull sound of her falling to the ground as the guards restrained her.I never looked back, but she didn't give up. For a long time afterward, she kept appearing in my life. Sometimes, she'd stand outside my office building holding an expensive watch from a luxury brand, her eyes red from crying. "Sebastian, you used to love this brand. It took me forever to track this one down…

Before I could say anything else, a cool, commanding voice cut through the tension. "Let go of him."Mikaela Irwin stepped in front of me, a flicker of jealousy crossing her otherwise composed features. She slipped her arm through mine and turned to the woman. "Miss, my husband has already made it clear that he doesn't know you. Given your behavior, you're crossing the line into harassment and disorderly conduct. If you continue, I have no problem seeking a restraining order or pursuing further legal action."Every word was crisp and precise, delivered with an attorney's unmistakable authority."Stay away from him."I slipped an arm around her waist. Her faint, cool perfume surrounded me, and an unexpected calm settled over me. Suddenly, I remembered how I'd first met Mikaela. It happened a long time ago. Long before I realized those years had even passed. Long before I woke from the seven-year sleep I couldn't remember. After the accident, I lay unconscious in a hospit

I took a sip of the wine left in my glass, warmth spreading across my cheeks. My coworkers sat around the table, laughing and drinking together. The atmosphere was lively and relaxed. Ethan, the coworker who was close to me, said, "Cheers, Sebastian! That was the biggest deal our department landed all year, and we have you to thank for carrying us through. We're counting on you to keep leading the charge next year!"Another coworker said, "Absolutely! Mr. Castro, you are a beast when it comes to business!" Everyone laughed and raised their glasses. The warm light of the private room reflected in my eyes. It had been a good year. After waking from that long coma, the doctors told me I'd made what they called a miraculous recovery. The only thing I'd lost was several years of my memory. But I wasn't particularly bothered by it. If anything, I felt strangely relieved, as though I'd finally put down a burden I hadn't even known I'd been carrying. When I first woke up, I was

During the days Hallie remained unconscious, she was trapped in a long, endless dream. She dreamed of early spring that year, when Sebastian complained that the perfume in her study was too heavy. He replaced it with a citrus scent he'd blended himself. She pretended to be angry and chased after him. Laughing, he dodged her, his sleeve brushing against the desk and knocking over half a cup of coffee. The coffee spilled across the paper. He dipped his fingertip into the spilled coffee and drew a crooked character for "Sebastian" on the back of her hand. "That way, you'll take me with you wherever you go."She dreamed of a winter night when she was cold and slipped her feet beneath his clothes for warmth. He frowned, but instead of pushing her away, he wrapped her freezing feet against his chest and gently rubbed her chilled toes. Half-asleep in his arms, she mumbled, "Sebastian, your heartbeat is so loud."He lowered his head and kissed her damp temple, a soft laugh escap

On the way to the cemetery, heavy rain began to pour, drenching Hallie from head to toe. She didn't bother opening an umbrella. She simply let the rain run down her face, which had long since gone pale. She couldn't tell whether the wetness on her lips was rain or blood. All she could taste was bitterness and the faint metallic tang of blood. She had been walking too quickly, barely watching where she was going. The muddy ground gave way beneath her feet, and she slipped, crashing to the ground in front of the grave.Mud splattered across her dress, leaving her soaked and disheveled. But not a single bodyguard behind her dared to laugh.Hallie hunched over, her face ashen and hollow. She looked less like a living person than an empty shell simply going through the motions. Then she suddenly remembered the first time she'd met Sebastian, many years ago.It had also been a rainy night. Back then, she'd just had her leg broken and been dumped at the entrance of an alley lik

Hallie remembered receiving the same report on the eighth and ninth days. It wasn't until she was about to leave for the estate that the servants came rushing to her in a panic, claiming that Sebastian had escaped. All those strange details she'd dismissed before suddenly began to fall into place, forming a possibility that sent a chill through her. There was no way Sebastian would have lied about the date of his death in his farewell letter. He had no reason to. So, why had the servants deceived her? And why would they make up such a flimsy excuse as claiming that he had escaped?Unless… They had been hiding the truth from her all along.Hallie shot to her feet, her usually composed eyes burning with fury and panic. "Get the car ready. We're going to the estate. And don't alert anyone." She clenched the prayer beads and the letter so tightly that her knuckles turned white."I want to see him alive."Her voice trembled. "And if he's dead… I want to see him for myself."
