Chapter 3

Author: Ember Sterling
On Monday at 10:00 am, I was going over the next quarter's PR budget at my desk when the receptionist called my extension.

"Eleanor, you'd better come downstairs. Your family's causing a scene in the lobby."

I closed my laptop and headed for the elevator with my key card in hand. The doors slid open, and the noise hit me before I even left the elevator.

The lobby had polished marble floors. The company logo behind the reception desk was blindingly bright, and the icy air blowing from the vents left my chest feeling tight.

Mom was sitting on the floor with her hair in a wild mess. Her voice was shrill from all the crying.

Between sobs, she sneaked glances at the crowd gathering around us. She wouldn't stop talking about how ungrateful I was for cutting her off from my money. She even mentioned that I make tens of thousands of dollars a month but won't pay for her meals.

Harry stood nearby, livestreaming the whole scene with his phone on a gimbal. The camera panned back and forth between her and me as she rattled off accusation after accusation.

"Does someone like her deserve to work for a company like this?" Harry yelled. "Share this around, everyone! Let's make sure her boss sees what she's really like!"

Selena stood beside him. She was still wearing the coat she'd ruined.

The tailored waist was completely stretched out of shape, and the tear across the back had split open even farther. Dirt and dark stains covered the hem, and the white lining stuck out through the hole like a crumpled rag.

She pointed at me and raised her voice. "She looks down on us because we're poor! All we did was ask to borrow a coat, and she canceled every card in the house!"

I walked over to them.

"This is my workplace. You need to leave," I said calmly.

Mom reacted as though she'd been waiting for those exact words. She sprang to her feet, lunged at me, and hugged my leg. She put her whole weight into it.

"I'm not leaving! If you don't restore my credit card limit today, I'll die right here!" she screamed. "You've humiliated me! The sales assistant laughed at me when I couldn't even buy a bracelet yesterday!"

She wailed at the top of her lungs, but there were barely any tears in her eyes. Instead, she kept looking toward the crowd to make sure everyone was watching.

People around us had started whispering. A few of my coworkers looked ready to step in, but the people beside them held them back.

I tried to pull away, but Mom tightened her grip.

Harry shoved the camera even closer to my face. Comments poured across the livestream faster than I could read them. It was a wall of mockery and jeering.

Just then, the crowd parted.

Our HR manager, Sarah Walsh, walked over carrying a blue company folder. She glanced at Mom, then at Harry with his phone, and frowned.

"What's going on, Ms. Whitmore?" she asked sternly. "This is completely unacceptable. We have clients arriving any minute now. The lobby isn't the place for this."

She set the folder on the reception desk. Her voice was quiet, but there was no room for argument. "Just apologize to your mother and give her the money. Whatever's going on, deal with it at home. Don't bring it to work."

"This is a private matter," I said, meeting her gaze. "They trespassed onto company property and are causing a disturbance. You should be calling security."

Her expression hardened. "Security? And what happens if your mother falls and gets hurt? Besides, our clients will be coming through here shortly. Don't make this any worse and drag everyone else's performance review down with you."

The moment Sarah finished her sentence, Mom's eyes lit up.

"Just restoring my credit limit isn't enough!" she exclaimed.

She let go of my legs, stood up, and jabbed a finger at my face. "It's almost the end of the year. Hand over your bonus too. Your brother needs a down payment for a new car. Do that, and we'll call it even."

Harry turned the camera back toward me, a smug smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

"You heard her. That's what Mom wants. Say no if you dare. I won't end this livestream."

I looked at the three of them, then at the irritation written all over Sarah's face.

People passing through the lobby had slowed to a stop. Everyone wanted to see how this would end.

At the far end of the corridor, employees were wheeling documents into the conference rooms. Their footsteps seemed quieter, as though everyone was afraid of setting something off.

The clients hadn't arrived yet, but the tension in the air was thick.

Sarah sighed. She opened the folder in her hands and pulled out a sheet of paper bearing the company logo.

"Ms. Whitmore, if you can't handle your personal affairs, the company has no choice but to suspend you until further notice."

She held the letter out to me, pressing one finger against the corner. It was as though she couldn't even spare me that last shred of dignity.

His face was covered in stubble, and he looked completely worn out.Selena bit her lip. Her face was pale. She clutched the armrest so tightly that her knuckles had gone white. The judge flipped through the written judgment and delivered his final verdict. The next morning, back in my hometown, two enforcement officers stood outside a worn metal door. One of them held a roll of official seal tape."The plaintiff has requested a court order to freeze assets before the lawsuit due to a major debt dispute," the officer said, recording it with his body camera. "This property is now sealed. No one is allowed to remove the tape or enter the house without permission."They placed two yellow strips of tape across the door in the shape of an X. The bright red official stamp stood out in the sunlight.Several neighbors gathered in the hallway, trying to see what was happening."I heard their son and daughter-in-law got into trouble in the city. They damaged a clothing piece worth over 100 thousand," one said."Well, now they've lost their house."Mom sat on the stairs as she stared at the strips of tape on the door. She slapped her thigh and wailed. "What a disaster! That was my son's marital home! Where are we supposed to live now?"No on

The harsh fluorescent lights inside the mediation room at the police station cast a sickly white glow over everything.Selena sat on a plastic chair. Her hand shook violently as she held her phone. She shoved the screen into Harry's face. "Look! One of our relatives kicked all of us out of the family group chat when they found out we had to pay 180 thousand!"The screen showed: "You have been removed from the group 'A Loving Family' by the group owner."It wasn't just the family group chat. Every private chat with their relatives showed that they could no longer contact them."They were all insulting Eleanor yesterday in the group. The moment they heard we were in debt, they all ran!" she sobbed.Harry refused to believe her. He pulled out his own phone and opened his livestreaming account."I'm going to let the internet judge. 20 thousand people were watching my livestream earlier. Someone will definitely support us!"He entered the livestream page. A red notification appeared

The security guard opened the glass doors, and two police officers entered the building. The officer in front rested a hand on his body camera."Who called us? What seems to be the problem here?"The moment Mom heard the officers, she acted as if she'd found a lifeline. She didn't even end the call with the bank before dropping to her knees in front of the officers. She pointed at me and exclaimed, "You came at just the right time, officer! My daughter's working with outsiders to scam us out of 180 thousand dollars! She even froze my card behind my back. Now the bank's coming after me!"She held her phone up at them. The bank's number was still on the screen."Listen to this! The bank's already coming after me! She makes over ten grand a month, but she won't even support her own mother. She's abandoned me!"The officer frowned. He looked at the coat on the floor, then at me."Were you the one who called?"I calmly stepped forward.I opened my phone and pulled up the credit car

Ryan stepped into the center of the lobby. A blue badge from Cavell's legal department hung from his chest. He looked at the cashmere coat on the floor, then at Harry's phone, and finally at me."Eleanor, this coat was supposed to be returned to headquarters at 2:00 pm today," he said coldly. "Can someone explain what happened here?"Mom glanced at the two tall assistants standing behind Ryan. Her eyes shifted as her mind began to race.In a burst of desperation, she rushed over to me and snatched the copy of the agreement from my hand. She tore the paper in half before shredding it into tiny pieces.Crushing the scraps of paper under her shoes, she pointed at Ryan. "I tore up the agreement, so it means nothing now! You're all in on this, squeezing money out of my family. That's not happening! The document's gone. How are you going to make us pay now?"Ryan didn't stop her. He simply took out his phone and opened a file."The original copy of the agreement is secured in the comp

Selena stared at the paper on the floor. The arrogance on her face had completely disappeared."You can't fool everyone with a fake document!" She took a step back and pointed at the loan agreement. "180 thousand dollars for a coat like this? Is it made of gold or something?"I bent down and picked up the paper.I unfolded it and held up the side with the official stamps so everyone could see them. "Look at the seals. It's been stamped by Cavell's dry cleaner and the brand's legal department."I pulled a copy with the company's letterhead from my bag and held it up."Cavell Autumn/Winter Haute Couture cashmere coat, item number C-2024-FW-001. Loaned by Cavell to the Huffton branch PR department and placed under Eleanor Whitmore's care. Please return by September 16. The garment remains the property of Cavell."A wave of whispers rippled through the crowd.A coworker from the fashion department pushed her way to the front. She leaned in for a closer look and took a deep breath.
