Chapter 3

Author: Rare Brood
The birthday celebration that weekend was at a big restaurant.

Jack's mother, Melinda Brown, sat at the head of the table in a bright red dress, looking every bit the star of the show. A whole circle of relatives surrounded her, laying it on so thick with flattery that it was almost deafening.

I walked over with a gift box and handed it to her. "Happy birthday, Mrs. Locke."

Melinda didn't even spare me a glance. She just gave a perfunctory hum of acknowledgment.

A chubby relative next to her glanced at the gift box and said snidely, "Goodness, Noelle. Jack is a general manager at a big company now. What is this you've prepared?"

Another relative quickly chimed in. "Exactly. You're going to be the wife of a general manager one day. You shouldn't be so cheap with your gifts."

Before I could say anything, the door to the private room swung open. Jack walked in, holding Sasha's hand. She wore a haute couture dress, and the watch on her wrist drew every eye in the room.

"Happy birthday, Mrs. Locke. I wish you a long and healthy life," she said sweetly.

Melinda's face lit up instantly. She hurriedly beckoned to Sasha. "Oh, Sasha, you're here! Come, sit right next to me."

She grabbed Sasha's hand, her gaze glued to the watch on her wrist. "This watch is beautiful. Must've cost a fortune, huh?"

"Not really. It's only a little over 300,000 dollars. Jack insisted on buying it for me." Sasha ducked her head shyly.

A chorus of gasps instantly filled the room. All the relatives stared at Jack with even more feverish admiration.

"Jacko has really made it, hasn't he? Dropping over 300 grand on a watch like it's nothing!"

The chubby relative turned to me, her eyes full of disdain. "Noelle, look at how thoughtful Sasha is. You should take a leaf out of her book. Stop being so stingy and acting like every penny is glued to your hand."

Another relative jumped in right away. "Exactly. A woman should know how to be understanding and tolerant. Jacko has to entertain clients all the time. It's perfectly normal for him to care for someone who's like a sister to him."

I stared at the watch, unable to stop myself from sneering inwardly.

"You're right, Mrs. Locke. This watch is indeed beautiful." I stepped forward, looking at Sasha with a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "But buying a watch with company funds and gifting it to someone… It wouldn't look too good if word got out, would it?"

The room went dead silent. Every gaze swung toward me.

Jack's expression instantly darkened, and he stormed over to me in a few quick strides. "What the hell are you talking about, Noelle? This is my mom's birthday celebration. Do you just have to cause a scene?"

"Oh? I'm making things up?" I raised a brow.

I pulled out my phone and brought up a photo. "This is the transfer record from the finance department. 500,000 dollars were wired straight into Sasha's account, and the receipt for this watch is issued in her name."

I held the screen out in front of Melinda. "Mrs. Locke, your son used company money to buy another woman a watch. Do you think that's appropriate?"

Melinda's face twitched, but she quickly smoothed her expression over. She shoved my phone away and glared at me viciously. "Who cares whether it's company money or not? Jacko is the general manager, so the company's money is his money. You're not even married to him yet, and you think you get to stick your nose into everything?"

The chubby relative happily backed her up. "Exactly. Noelle, you're being ridiculous. It's normal for men to fool around a little when they're out socializing. How are you two supposed to build a life together after this, now that you've called him out in public?"

Suddenly, Sasha clutched her chest and staggered backward, her face draining of color. She whined, "Jack, my chest feels so tight…"

Jack lunged toward her and caught her, panic written all over his face. "Sasha! Sasha, are you okay?"

She leaned weakly against his chest, tears sliding from the corners of her eyes. "I'm sorry. It's all my fault for upsetting Ms. Stanton. I don't want this watch anymore. I'll give it back to her…"

With that, her eyes fluttered shut, and she went completely limp.

The room instantly descended into chaos.

Melinda went pale with fright and jabbed a finger at me, cursing me out. "Noelle Stanton, you jinx! Are you trying to give Jacko an aneurysm? I won't ever forgive you if anything happens to Sasha!"

Jack scooped Sasha up in his arms and turned to glare at me, pure hatred burning in his eyes. "Noelle, you make me sick. I swear I won't let you off the hook if anything is wrong with Sasha."

He stormed out of the room without another look back, cradling Sasha in his arms.

The relatives all turned on me with looks of condemnation.

"What a vicious woman. How could she go after a young lady like that?"

"How did Jacko ever fall for someone like her? He should just call off the engagement already!"

I stood where I was, calmly watching the circus act. The more gleefully these shallow, snobbish people acted now, the harder they would crash in the future.

I picked up my purse from the table and walked out of that suffocating, private room without looking back.

Six months passed in the blink of an eye.In the busiest commercial district downtown, the new-energy tech company I controlled was holding the grand opening ceremony for its headquarters. The weather wasn't cooperating. It was pouring, but the heavy rain didn't dampen the excitement at the scene. Industry bigwigs had all shown up, and reporters' cameras were flashing nonstop.I cut the red ribbon amid thunderous applause."Congratulations, Ms. Stanton! With this new energy project landing, your future is limitless!"Several veteran business leaders came over with champagne, smiling from ear to ear. I clinked glasses with them and smiled, handling the small talk with ease.Just then, a commotion broke out near the security line at the building's perimeter."Hey, what do you think you're doing? Back up! You can't park your scooter here!"A few security guards in suits were pushing away a man in a food-delivery uniform, their movements rough. The man was soaked to the bone and h

Jack had finally hit rock bottom. He couldn't even afford rent and was forced to move into a dark, damp basement room in the slums.Later, all the disgusting things that happened in that basement eventually reached my ears.Sasha had latched onto him like a leech. After Jim got the money from her, he'd blown it all at the casino. When it was gone, he'd beaten Sasha half to death, then packed up and disappeared.Broke and with nowhere else to go, Sasha had crawled back to Jack."Jack, I was wrong. I know that I messed up." She'd kneeled at the basement door, clutching Jack's leg and sobbing like her heart was being ripped out. "Jim forced me. He threatened me with my parents' lives. That's the only reason I gave him the money."Jack had stared at her, taking in her face mottled with bruises. A flash of disgust had passed through his eyes. He'd kicked her away."Get out, you bitch! If it weren't for you, I never would've ended up like this!" he'd roared. But Sasha hadn't left. She

I mailed the detailed account statement, along with copies of the mortgage contract, to every single one of Jack's relatives. In less than three days, the Locke family's house was forcibly seized by the creditor.Later, from the documents Alan organized from me, I saw that Melinda had clung to the doorframe, wailing and refusing to leave. In the end, the debt collectors had dragged her straight out onto the street. She was used to throwing her weight around in the city, but at that point, she'd had no choice but to slink back to her rundown hometown in the countryside. All the relatives who had flattered her shamelessly at her birthday celebration now acted completely differently."Well, well. If it isn't the big-shot general manager's mom. What's with the homeless look?""General manager, my ass. Her precious son used company money to support his side piece and even lost the family home. That's called karma!"Melinda tried to crash at a relative's place but got a bucket of dirty

The following morning, I was jolted awake by my phone ringing over and over. The second I answered, Jack's hysterical voice exploded through the speaker."Noelle, what the hell did you do? Why did the bank freeze all my accounts?"I rubbed my temples and pushed myself up in bed. "Mr. Locke, you're the company's legal representative. The 30-million-dollar debt from the earnout agreement is due. Of course, the bank went after you.""That's bullshit! You're the one who signed that agreement!" he roared."It's all in black and white. You personally signed the paperwork to make you the legal representative." My tone stayed calm. "You went to the bank first thing this morning to try to shuffle money around, right? How'd that go?"The line went dead quiet, leaving only his heavy breathing. I didn't need to see him to picture his face right now. What bank would lend a cent to a company owner carrying 30 million in debt and a completely ruined credit record?"Noelle." Jack's voice sudden

The entire hall fell silent. Every gaze in the room locked onto Sasha. Her face turned as white as a sheet, and she started to tremble all over. "N-No, it's not like that. Jack, let me explain—"She reached out to grab Jack's sleeve, but he shook her off. He stared at the name in the "Spouse" field on the screen, completely stunned. Then, he turned to look at Sasha, his lips quivering. "You're married?"Right on cue, the doors of the banquet hall were kicked open with a loud bang. A man reeking of alcohol staggered in, cursing as he came."Sasha Lane, you shameless bitch! I've been looking all over for you, and you're hiding out here cozying up to some rich sucker?" He was clutching a broken liquor bottle, his eyes vicious.Jack and Sasha both stared at him, their faces instantly bloodless. The man, Jim Ward, lurched up onto the stage and grabbed a fistful of Sasha's carefully styled hair. She screamed as he yanked her down to the floor."Where's the money, you whore? I lost 500

Jack froze for a second, clearly not expecting me to agree so easily. He shot me a suspicious look, picked up the document, and went through it carefully. Once he confirmed the signature was mine, unrestrained joy spread across his face."Now, you're being sensible," he said. He smugly slid the document into his drawer. "Leave the car keys, and you can go."I took the car keys out of my bag and set them lightly on the desk. The moment I turned around, I caught the flash of greed and triumph in Sasha's eyes. That same afternoon, I saw her social media update. In the photo, she was sitting in the passenger seat of my car and holding that limited edition watch. She smiled like she'd just won the lottery. The caption read, "True love will always defeat money. Thank you, my knight in shining armor."Below it was a neat row of likes and fawning comments from the company executives. I scrolled through the replies with a cold expression, took a screenshot, and sent it straight to Alan."
