Chapter 3

Author: Sole Authority
After several rounds of drinks, Rosalie’s face flushed slightly, and her confidence grew bolder.

From the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse under the table. Drake’s foot was deliberately brushing against Rosalie’s calf.

"Drake, back when we played house as kids, I always said I’d marry you when we grew up." Rosalie, emboldened by alcohol, stared at him with a hazy gaze. "Too bad I was young and foolish back then. I left to chase opportunities in another city and made you suffer all those years."

Drake’s eyes softened as he let out a sentimental sigh. "Yeah. If you hadn’t left back then, I wouldn’t have…" He shot me a glance, his eyes filled with disdain. "…ended up marrying a washed-up woman."

I lowered my head and continued eating, pretending not to hear, but inside, I let out a cold laugh.

"It’s fine! It’s not too late now!" Rosalie suddenly slammed her hand on the table. "Once the New Year’s over and I join Halcyon Group, I’ll be making hundreds of thousands a year to start! I’ll buy a big house and bring you over to enjoy life with me!"

"Really, Rosalie?" Diana’s eyes widened. "Your aunt really has that kind of influence?"

"Of course!" Rosalie proudly pulled out her phone and flipped to a photo. "See this? That’s my Aunt Zara! General Manager of the Project Division at Halcyon Group! A real executive, handling projects worth hundreds of millions. Even the top bosses in our city have to bow their heads when they see her."

I glanced up at the photo.

A slightly overweight middle-aged woman stood in front of an Audi, flashing a peace sign.

It was indeed Zara.

I set down my chopsticks, pulled out a napkin, and wiped my mouth. "Oh? Zara Finn is your aunt? Then I really should thank her properly."

"What, you don’t believe me?" Rosalie let out a scornful laugh. "Let me tell you something, you’re not even worthy of saying my aunt’s name. At Halcyon Group, aside from the mysterious big boss, my aunt calls the shots!"

"Is that so?" I smiled faintly, my gaze steady. "I hope she’s still that confident when the time comes."

Drake rolled his eyes at me. "Liana, cut the sarcasm. Rosalie was kind enough to offer you a job. If you don’t appreciate it, fine, but don’t put on airs. Finish eating and clean up the table. Stop making yourself an eyesore."

I stood up without arguing.

Back in the bedroom, I left the door slightly ajar, just enough to hear the living room.

The sounds of clinking glasses gradually faded, replaced by hushed whispers.

"Mom, I can’t stand another day with her. I want a divorce." Drake’s voice carried a hint of drunkenness, but more than that, undisguised disgust.

"Really?" Diana’s voice shot up before she quickly lowered it again. "Then, what about Liana? She might be spineless, but she’s stubborn. What if she refuses to leave?"

At that, I held my breath.

Drake let out a cold snort. "Refuses to leave? That’s not up to her. Mom, didn’t we already plan this? In a bit, I’ll tell her my cousin needs money to buy a house and ask her for $100,000. We’ll get the money first."

My heart sank.

"Yes, yes!" Diana agreed eagerly. "Get the money first. Then we’ll pick a fight and force her to sign the divorce papers."

"What about those gold bangles?" Rosalie suddenly asked. "From the look of them, even if you said they’re fake, what if they’re real? Should we get them checked?"

"Checked for what?" Diana scoffed. "With how poor she looks, could she afford the real thing? I already looked. The clasp is worn. Definitely gold-plated junk. Keeping them is just taking up space. When the divorce happens, we’ll toss them back to her as bus fare so she can’t say we took advantage of her."

"Hahaha, Aunt Diana, that’s brilliant!" Rosalie laughed crudely. "By then, she’ll lose both her money and everything else, crying as she gets kicked out!"

"Rosalie, you have to treat me well then," Drake said in a syrupy voice. "For you, I’m willing to ruin my reputation."

"Don’t worry, baby. Tonight…" Rosalie’s voice turned suggestive, trailing off. "Tonight we’ll…"

I stood in the dim bedroom, fists clenched, my nails digging deep into my palms until they drew blood.

I took out my phone and sent a message to my assistant, Caleb Rhodes: "Notify HR. Terminate Zara Finn immediately for abuse of authority."

Drake snapped. He lunged at her, grabbing and tearing at her hair. "You witch! You said you’d take care of me for life! And now you’re throwing me away?! I’ll kill you!"They tumbled to the floor, clawing at each other like animals.I frowned slightly, then waved a hand. "Clean this up."Caleb nodded and handed Drake a document. "Mr. Murrell, this is the divorce agreement. Ms. Thornton has already signed it. Due to your fault—infidelity, financial misconduct, and fraud—you will leave with nothing. The $100,000 and all of the expenses Ms. Thornton incurred on you over the years will be fully recovered. If even a cent is missing, you can expect prison.""No! I won’t sign! I won’t divorce her!" Drake screamed, tearing at the papers. "I’m married to the richest woman alive! I won’t divorce even if I die!""You don’t have a choice," Caleb said coldly. "The evidence is sufficient. The court will enforce it. Zara Finn is already under investigation for embezzlement. Rosalie Hammer will b

I pulled my hand back, letting her grab nothing but air."Don’t touch it." I looked at her with disgust. "Didn’t you say it would turn your wrist green? Didn’t you call it trash?""No, no. It’s not trash, it’s a treasure! I was wrong!" She slapped herself across the face without hesitation. "Liana, please, don’t take it personally… For Drake’s sake—""For his sake?" I let out a cold laugh. "You think any of you still have any standing?"I turned, taking another box from Caleb. Inside was a tarnished silver bracelet. "Since we’re talking about that, let’s settle last year’s account."I held it up, my gaze sharp. "Last year, you gave my father this bracelet. You said it was sterling silver and cost a lot. It wasn’t. It was industrial scrap metal. The lead content was dangerously high. My father wore it for less than three days before his wrist started reacting. He needed treatment for half a month."He hid it from me so I wouldn’t feel caught in the middle. He even told me to treat

Zara’s sobbing echoed through the worn-out living room, raw and desperate.Drake held his swollen cheek, staring blankly, his mind completely empty. Diana’s broom clattered to the floor, her mouth hanging open."W-what is going on?" Diana stammered, her voice shaking. "Did you get the wrong person? That’s just Liana… She doesn’t even have a proper job—""Shut up!" Zara snapped, spinning around, eyes bloodshot. "A nobody? She’s the CEO of Halcyon Group! The richest person in Aurelion! You idiots couldn’t tell the difference between power and nothing. You’ve ruined everything! You’ve ruined me!""The richest…?" Drake staggered, as if struck by lightning. At that moment, a low, synchronized rumble of engines sounded outside. Not one car.A convoy. The front gate swung open, and rows of black-suited bodyguards moved in with precision, taking control of the scene instantly. My assistant, Caleb, walked straight up to me and gave a slight bow. "Ms. Thornton, the wind is picking up ou

Right then, a sharp ringtone exploded from her phone.Zara glanced down. The arrogance on her face vanished instantly, replaced with forced respect. She motioned for everyone to be quiet and lowered her voice. "Stop talking. It’s the Vice President, Winston Walker, from headquarters."The moment they heard "Vice President", both Rosalie and Drake looked at her with awe.Zara cleared her throat, putting on a flattering smile as she answered. "Hello, Mr. Walker, Happy New Year! Why are you personally—""Zara, you idiot!" A furious roar blasted through the phone. "Who the hell did you offend?!"She froze, cold sweat breaking out instantly. "M-Mr. Walker, what do you mean? I… I’m back in my hometown for the holidays. I haven’t offended anyone—""You haven’t?" he barked. "Then why did the CEO personally order your termination?! The CEO’s assistant just called me directly! Abuse of authority, taking kickbacks—the legal department has already reported it, and Audit is coming after your

I flicked ash from my cigarette. "How do you want to handle this?""Simple." She raised two fingers. First, get on your knees and beg her forgiveness. I want to hear it. Then pay $50,000 in medical bills. Otherwise, one phone call from me and you’ll be locked up. Believe it or not.""$50,000?" I smiled. "Madam Finn, don’t you think that’s a bit paltry? Your niece just said you were going to arrange a cleaning job for me with a salary of tens of thousands a year."Zara's face darkened. "Drop the attitude. Looks like you’re choosing the hard way."Drake immediately perked up, arms crossed. "Liana, did you hear that? That’s her giving you a chance. $50,000 for one leg. You’re getting a bargain. Kneel and apologize now, or don’t blame us."Diana grabbed a broom and blocked the door. "That’s right! Kneel, sign the divorce papers, and leave with nothing! Otherwise, this doesn’t end today!"Rosalie clutched her stomach, still sneering. "Aunt, stop wasting time. Call for backup. She was

For a second, the air went still.I set my teacup down and looked at her with a faint smile. The aggression on her face froze. Her eyes widened as if they might fall out. She stopped so abruptly she nearly stumbled, her whole body trembling."L-L…"Her lips quivered, the words caught in her throat. She had seen me once from afar at a company annual event. She had never spoken to me, but she recognized my face.Rosalie and Drake didn’t notice anything and kept shouting."Aunt, what are you waiting for? Call someone to deal with her!""Exactly! Madam Finn, people like her need to be taught a lesson!"The shouting snapped her out of it. She rubbed her eyes hard and stared again.I was wearing a cheap coat I had bought to stay low-key, the cuffs already worn. The fear in her eyes faded. She quickly reasoned it out. No, that couldn’t be right. The richest person in Aurelion wouldn’t show up alone in a place like this during the holidays. There were plenty of lookalikes. I just re
