Chapter 22

She shook her head and then abruptly said, "I don't know why, but I have been missing you a lot recently. I feel very uneasy and keep thinking that you are going to leave me. Just like how Joseph left me without saying anything."

I paused for a moment and then said with a smile, "Silly, I will always be here."

"Carol, I keep feeling like you are hiding something from me."

After leaving the prison, I hesitated a little before deciding to go to town. I happened to chance upon Joseph's grandmother pushing him in his wheelchair and followed them from a distance, not bothering him until his grandmother had gone.

I knew that he was not stupid. He was waiting for me to approach him.

I had not yet reached him when I heard him ask, "How is she?"

I asked softly, "Who?"

"Summer," he said.

"Do you know her?"

"I am not stupid. Of course I remember her."

I asked him, "Then why did you pretend not to?"
