Chapter 4

Author: Snowy Ball
When Eve woke up again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed. The person sitting by her side was not Sean but the family’s housekeeper.

“Ma’am, you’re finally awake,” the housekeeper said, still shaken. “I was the one who brought you to the hospital. I made the oat milk myself. I swear to God, I didn’t put any soybeans in it.”

Eve slowly closed her eyes. A thin tear slid down the corner of her eye.

“I know.”

The housekeeper had made the oat milk, so she was absolutely certain there were no soybeans in it. Yet when Eve collapsed, the housekeeper still chose to believe that it was an allergic reaction and rushed her to the hospital. However, where was Sean? The man who had once promised to love her for the rest of his life had left her alone at home, waiting to die.

Mandy was in the hospital room right next door. Late that night, when Eve got up to use the restroom, she saw Sean standing beside Mandy’s bed, keeping watch over her.

He used to do the same for Eve whenever she was sick. A man of his status was always busy, with endless responsibilities and obligations. Yet every time Eve fell ill, he would cancel all his work and stay by her side. He would pour her water, cook for her, and coax her into taking her medicine…

Thinking of those memories, Eve’s eyes reddened. She could not understand how something once so beautiful had turned into this.

“Sean, I’m about to die,” Mandy said weakly from the bed, tears clinging to her lashes as she leaned into his arms. “Before I die, I want an answer. After all this time, did you ever love me?”

Sean fell silent for a long time.

“Even just a little would be enough,” Mandy sobbed. “Sean, I’m not asking for your whole heart. If you’ve ever felt even the slightest bit of affection for me, I could die with no regret.”

Looking at Mandy’s tear-streaked face, Sean’s heart ached. As if he could no longer suppress his emotions, he reached out and pulled her tightly into his arms.

“Mandy, of course I have feelings for you,” he said softly. “Forgive me. I can’t tell you that I love you because I already have Eve. I can’t betray her. But if Eve didn’t exist, I could tell you this: you would be the woman I love most in this world.”

Eve felt as if someone had punched a hole straight through her heart and squeezed it. She lifted her hand to touch her face, only then realizing that tears were already streaming down.

She had once believed that Sean was only with Mandy for the thrill of it. She had thought there was nothing between them but desire—no love. However, how could there be no love? When Mandy collapsed, coughing up blood, his eyes had been filled with panic and concern. When Mandy placed the rosary, one that Eve had once knelt step by step to beg for, into such a filthy place, he had not said a single word of blame. The scales in his heart had already tipped long ago.

Eve turned away, tears falling as she walked off. She had barely taken a few steps when her phone suddenly vibrated. Mandy had sent her a video.

Below it was a message that read: [Everything he once gave you, he has also given to me.]

Eve tapped on the video, and a lively wedding scene appeared on the screen. At a glance, she recognized the venue. It was the very place where she and Sean had held their wedding. Not only was the location the same, but the decorations, the layout, and even the smallest details were identical.

For a brief moment, Eve almost believed the video was footage from her own wedding. However, that illusion was shattered the second Mandy, wearing a white wedding gown, appeared on screen.

Eve gasped.

“Mandy, I’ve heard from Sean that you’re pregnant with his child, and twins at that,” Sean’s mother said warmly in the video, holding Mandy’s hand with obvious affection. “I’m so happy! You’re truly a great blessing to the Baker family! Even though you and Sean can’t legally get married, I promise you this: everything Eve has, you’ll have too. And everything she doesn’t have, you’ll have as well.”

As she spoke, Sean’s mother removed the emerald bracelet from her own wrist.

“This is the Baker family’s heirloom,” she said with a smile. “It’s an antique, something once worn by royalty. There’s only one of these in the Baker family. It’s passed down only to the daughter-in-law.”

With that, she slipped the bracelet onto Mandy’s wrist and said, “Mandy, you’re the only daughter-in-law I acknowledge.”

“This is disgusting! I never thought Sean would be this kind of person!”“He always put on that perfect-husband image, but behind the scenes, he’s a playboy!”“This is unbelievable. If I recall, he was voted ‘Best Husband of the Year’ online. Is this what that means? Netizens really have a strange sense of judgment!”…Back when Sean kept his perfect-husband image, he had gained a huge fan following, and his company kept growing bigger and bigger. However, the internet was a double-edged sword—if it could make him, it could break him as well. Now, with Sean’s perfect-husband image gone, the stock of Bakers Corporation suffered a major hit, falling month after month, evaporating billions seemingly out of thin air. Sean took a devastating loss.Eve, on the other hand, had finalized her divorce and divided their assets before the scandal went public. Hence, her wealth remained completely untouched. More than that, out of sympathy, many netizens began supporting Eve’s company with unp

Everything should be over, Sean thought. He had ended it all with his own hands. Mandy had received the punishment she deserved, and the twins had been sent away. Now that he had drawn a line under this whole farce, Eve should give him another chance. After all, people deserved second chances.“Eve,” Sean said, “for you, I even sent Zack and Annie away. You’re the most important person in my life. If you don’t like it, I can even give up my own flesh and blood! I love you. For you, I’d give up everything!”Faced with Sean’s passionate confession, Eve could not help but laugh bitterly. She gave him a cold, piercing look before saying flatly, “So that was why you secretly removed my uterus without telling me? Do you even know that uterine fibroids are hardly ever life-threatening? Most women have them. If that’s what you mean by loving me, Sean, that’s terrifying!”Sean’s expression changed. His voice trembled as he asked, “What? Fibroids aren’t life-threatening? You… how do you know

“Sean! Zack and Annie are your flesh and blood! If you do this, you’ll be punished for it!” Mandy screamed hysterically, her voice tearing through the room, but it was useless. With that, a group of doctors in white coats rushed forward and forcibly dragged her away.To the outside world, Sean announced that Mandy had been diagnosed with “cancer” and needed immediate chemotherapy. In truth, she did not have cancer at all.Chemotherapy was meant to kill cancer cells inside the body. Yet, while the machines destroyed cancer cells, they also damaged healthy ones. That was why the process was so brutal, with many real cancer patients growing weaker with every treatment. Their hair would fall out in clumps, and their bodies would waste away as they became more and more haggard. Now, Mandy, who was not sick at all, was being forced to undergo chemotherapy every single day, and every side effect hit her. Her hair began falling out by the handful. Before long, her once thick, glossy hair

Mandy lay collapsed in a pool of blood, tears streaming down her face.Choking back sobs, she screamed in a voice filled with despair, “No, I don’t believe it. Sean, you said you loved me. You said you loved me so much that it was almost driving you crazy. I refuse to believe that in your eyes, I’m just someone who can be sacrificed so easily or some worthless piece of trash.”Crying as she spoke, she struggled forward, crawling to Sean’s feet. With a bloodstained hand, she reached out, trying to grab hold of his long legs.“I refuse to believe it! I refuse to believe it! Sean, you love me. You must love me, right?”However, Sean lifted his foot and, looking impatient, kicked her hard to the side.“I did like you a little,” he said coldly. “But what I liked was that you were obedient, sensible, and knew how to please me. Do you see it now? In my eyes, you’re like a pet dog. When I’m happy, I’ll play with you. When I’m not, I can crush you to death whenever I want.“But Eve is dif

Suddenly, Sean’s hand clamped tightly around Mandy’s throat. Fear instantly flashed across her face.“No… No… Sean… I didn’t trick you…” Mandy cried, tears streaming down her face. “Sean, you’re hurting me. Please, let go!”However, at that moment, her tears no longer had any effect on him.Sean snickered. “In that case, how about I take you to the hospital right now for a full examination? What I hate most is being played. If the results come back showing you don’t have cancer, I swear I’ll force-feed you carcinogens until you actually get it.”That single sentence drained all the color from Mandy’s face.“No! Please don’t!” she cried out, her face deathly pale. “Sean, I was wrong! I’m begging you, please let me go! I didn’t mean to deceive you. I did all this because I love you too much! Just like how you fell madly in love with me, I loved you so much that I lost my mind!“I loved you so much that I started obsessively hating Eve. I didn’t want to be some hidden woman you kept

Sean was detained for a full week. Even when he was released, the police fitted him with an electronic ankle monitor. If he dared to go anywhere near Eve again, the device would immediately emit a piercing alarm. At the same time, nearby officers would receive an alert and rush over to protect Eve.By contrast, Rob—the one who had actually thrown the punch—walked away untouched. Eve had testified on his behalf, stating that he acted in self-defense, stepping in to stop an assault. Due to that, Rob was released without charge. The difference in treatment was like a knife to Sean’s heart, and yet, he did not blame Eve. After his release, he finally turned on his phone and carefully went through his chat history with her. As he scrolled through the messages, everything suddenly became clear.“Damn it…” His teeth clenched in rage. “So this was all Mandy’s doing! To think that vile woman actually sent Eve these videos!”The content of the videos was obscene, and beneath every single one
