Chapter 2

Author: Peanut Butter
The staff, done with caution, moved in to throw me out.

I broke free from their grip, my voice a low growl.

"Back off. Don't touch me. I'm here with Jim Lawrence, the billionaire. He's my dad!"

Laughter rippled through the onlookers. Henry, smirking, could not resist a jab.

"The billionaire's son? That's a Branford University grad who's practically running the Lawrence empire after just two years back home.

"The only thing you share with him is the last name, Lawrence. You, a chauffeur, pretending to be him? That's just delusional."

He sneered, "However, hey, as fellow alumni, maybe one day you can babysit for Clara and me."

I shot back with a sneer of my own.

"Assuming you can even have kids. And what's your big achievement? Winning over a wealthy widow?"

That struck a nerve. Henry's face twisted in anger.

He had been dying to give Clara a child, to cement his place in her family.

However, his past excesses had taken their toll, and even the most experienced doctor could not save him by then.

Enraged and humiliated, Henry barked at the staff.

"Are you deaf? Get him out of here, now!"

Without another word, they grabbed me and hauled me toward the door.

My son's tears erupted in fear, and I, desperate not to hurt him, fought to free us from their grip.

"I can walk by myself, just don't touch my son!"

However, Clara's face paled, and she blurted out in disbelief. "Jayden, what are you saying? He's your son?!"

"Yes, he's my son."

"You're married to someone else? No way! I don't believe you're over me!"

Her reaction threw me for a loop.

"Why wouldn't I be over you? We've been done for ages."

Clara was not buying it, her eyes locking onto my wrist.

Glancing down, I saw my sleeve had ridden up during the scuffle, exposing my watch.

Clara smirked as if she had caught me in a lie.

"Oh, Jayden, still playing tough. I just knew you couldn't forget me. Why else would you wear the watch I gave you?

"If you come clean now and ask for my forgiveness, maybe I'll consider giving you another shot."

'What she gave me?' I thought, annoyed.

The watch she gave me was a cheap fake, rusted and gone for who knew how many years.

This watch was from my wife, Rowena Smith, who knew I loved that collection. She designed it herself and had it custom-made half a year in advance, a one-of-a-kind in the world.

I was at a loss for words. "Take a good look at these diamonds. You think you can afford any of them?

"This is a gift from my wife, and it's got nothing to do with you."

The diamonds sparkled with an unmistakable high-end shine.

Then, Henry yanked the watch off my wrist, his sneer widening.

"Jayden, how on earth could you afford such a pricey piece? This place is crawling with the rich. You must've swiped it from someone!

"If you're broke and can't even buy a meal, just say the word. You can bag up the leftovers from the party later.

"You think you can get away with stealing? A kid raised by a thief is bound to end up in trouble, maybe even get knocked around," Henry sneered.

I felt a surge of anger at his words. "Henry, zip it! You have no right to talk about my kid like that!"

Henry was about to retort when something clicked. He stared at the child in my arms, recognition dawning on his face. "That's Rowena's kid! Jayden, what's he doing with you?

"Are you planning to snatch him? You're in way over your head!"

I lost it, my voice booming as I said, "Clara, you've really gone off the deep end. Who do you think you are, thinking you're fit to have my child?"Look in the mirror. You're nothing compared to my wife. It's laughable!"Clara's face soured, but she clung to her delusion."Jayden, I don't buy it. We were together for four years in college. You showed me your love time and again. How could you just drop me for someone else? Rowena forced your hand, didn't she?"I took a deep breath, trying to keep my cool."When I think about the time I've wasted with you, it makes me feel sick to my stomach."This is your last warning. Stay out of my sight, or I'll make sure you can't stick around in this city."I rolled the window up and signaled for the driver to go.However, Clara did not give up."Jayden, you're just testing me, right? I'll show you. I'll pass whatever test you throw at me."She stood there, defiant, in front of the car, as if that would prove her point.I shook my head

Clara was left behind. She had not actually thrown a punch or anything. She was giving me a look, like she had a ton to say but could not spit it out.I ignored her, letting Rowena help me into the car and off to the hospital to get checked for injuries.By the time we got back to our place, a crowd had gathered outside. They were all people I had crossed paths with, and they were not happy. They were there to say sorry. My father had gotten home before us and had already spread the word that there would be consequences. He had cut ties with their businesses on the spot, leaving some of them without suppliers or cash flow. They would be bankrupt in no time, and the others, scared stiff by my father's move, rushed over to make amends. They did not know yet that the instigators were already cooling their heels in jail.As Rowena and I walked up, they plastered on fake smiles and started groveling."Mr. Lawrence, Ms. Smith, please, have a heart. We'll straighten out our kids and

Everyone there was visibly shaken, and they started to beg for mercy."Ms. Smith, it wasn't on purpose, I swear! Clara and Henry were the ones who stirred everything up. We were all fooled by them.""Yeah, it was all Henry's idea. He said if we gave Mr. Lawrence a hard time, you'd meet with us.""We're so sorry for what we did to Mr. Lawrence. Please, we're begging you, show us some mercy, please..."All fingers pointed at Henry.Rowena's glare could have frozen lava. Her voice was soft but carried the weight of boulders. "You're going to regret this big time."Henry's knees turned to jelly under Rowena's death stare, and he just crumpled to the floor. He turned to Clara, desperate. "Clara, you have to help me..."However, Clara was done with him. If he had not been such a troublemaker, they would not be in that mess.Right then, her assistant's text came through with the dirt on Henry. The guy had a track record with rich girls, five from college and three wealthy foreigners

My father, seeing my battered face and hearing his grandson's wails, was livid. He took his cane and started swinging it at my attackers. They all knew him, the famous tycoon from the finance channels, and none dared retaliate as they cried out in pain. However, Henry was still clueless."Mr. Lawrence, you must be mistaken. This man was impersonating your son. He really had the gall to do that."We didn't like the looks of him, so we gave him a beating. You should be thanking us."My father, with a heavy heart, lifted me off the ground and bellowed, "Jayden is my son, and you have the nerve to mess with him? You're going to regret it!"Rowena had her assistant scoop up our son, and she quickly checked over my injuries, her eyes frosted with fury when she turned to Henry. "Are you telling me my own husband kidnapped my son?"Henry's eyes nearly popped out of his head; he was so shocked he could not believe what he was hearing.Clara was just as floored, it never crossed her mind

Clara's face turned stormy after my words hit home.Always one to doubt, she then questioned everything. She turned to Henry with a dark look."Is that true? You knew about my family from the beginning?"Henry looked like a kicked puppy as he pleaded with her."Clara, Jayden's making stuff up. Don't you trust me? I knew it was love at first sight when I met you."I did everything for you. Have you forgotten all I've done?"Clara's suspicion wavered but did not fade away. She sent a quick text to her assistant, asking them to dig into Henry's past at college.Henry was livid, his face red with rage. He charged at me and landed a punch that felt like a hammer. My son was ripped from my arms when I least expected it."Daddy! Daddy! Save me!" My son's cries cut through the chaos. I had to keep him calm, so I called out, "Hang in there, buddy. Mommy and Grandpa are on their way. They'll take care of the bad guys. Don't worry."His tears slowed to sniffles as I kept talking, but it

The room went silent at the mention of Rowena. She was a big deal, the top investor on the planet. Anything she touched turned to gold. Her wealth was legendary, making even the richest tycoon look like small fry.The buzz was that Rowena would be there, and everyone there was tripping over themselves for a chance to impress her.My little guy wrapped his arms around my neck, his voice soft and defiant as he said, "He's my dad. My dad. And you're the meanie."Henry was not buying it. He lunged forward, trying to take my son. 'If I can buddy up with Rowena, the sky will be the limit,' he thought. He was so blinded by greed that his face twisted with it. "Hand him over, Jayden. If you're pulling a kidnapping stunt, you won't see a dime, and you'll be behind bars before you know it!"The crowd started to close in, reaching for my son. He burst into tears, and I held him closer, ready to bolt from that mess. "He's my son. Back off. We're out of here."However, Henry was in our face,
