Chapter 7

Author: Tranquil Phoenix
Zeke was on the verge of leaving when Sophie's sobs broke the silence.

"Are you really going? I don't want to be alone. Please, stay with me. I just had the baby, and my whole body aches."

"Alright, I'll stay." He wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes. "You just had a baby. You shouldn't cry."

"Okay, I won't if you stay with me."

Relief washed over Zeke when Sophie finally settled down, yet Lily's face flashed vividly in his mind.

"Zeke, please, save our child…"

Her desperate pleas haunted his ears like a lingering echo, tightening the knot in his chest. She'd seemed injured then, and he had no idea how she was doing now.

Footsteps echoed outside the door, and Zeke caught fragments of nurses' voices.

"Aren't you off yet? The night shift ended some time ago. Why haven't you gone home?"

"I'm tied up. A pregnant woman was brought in last night. She was bleeding heavily and struggling through obstructed labor. Dr. Lambert has been fighting nonstop to save her."

"How far along was she? What is her current condition?"

"She was eight months pregnant. Her condition remains critical, and the surgery is still underway."

The nurse sighed before continuing, "That poor woman arrived at midnight, bloodied and ghostly pale, without her husband by her side."

The conversation sent a tremor through Zeke. The words "eight months pregnant", "bleeding heavily", and "complicated labor" echoed in his mind. His thoughts turned immediately to Lily.

Could the woman they were talking about be her?

He told himself it was impossible, that it couldn't be. Yet panic was already tightening its hold. He rose to his feet, determined to seek out someone who could offer him clear answers.

"I need to use the bathroom, Zeke. Can you help me?" Sophie asked.

She caught the nurses talking. There was no way she could have missed it. If that woman were really Lily, then everything would fall into place perfectly.

If Lily and her baby were gone, Sophie and her child could stay with the Connollys openly, as their lady and heir. A sharp gleam sparked in her eyes, only to vanish just as quickly.

"Alright," Zeke said.

For reasons he couldn't explain, a sudden fear gripped him. He couldn't bring himself to face the truth. The idea that Lily and their child might be gone was unbearable.

After a long and desperate battle in the operating room, the baby within Lily's womb failed to survive. She had arrived at the hospital with her water already broken.

Her body was weak from the start, and despite all her attempts, she was unable to deliver. She fainted again and again.

Surgery was performed to remove the baby, but it had been deprived of oxygen for too long. The doctors tried every possible means to save the baby, yet in the end, they were powerless.

Wayne Lambert looked down at Lily, who was unconscious on the operating table, and shook his head. Pain was etched across his face.

"We have to let it go. There's nothing left we can do."

"The baby was eight months along, and it's gone. She'll be broken when she wakes."

Wayne sighed as he stitched up her wounds. "And where in God's name is her husband? Leaving a woman that far along, alone at home in the dead of night? It's unforgivable."

Lily woke up to her body shaking uncontrollably. The anesthesia was still coursing through her veins. Around her stretched an endless expanse of white, while the sharp sting of disinfectant hung thick in the air.

Slowly, the truth settled. She had been brought to the hospital, after all.

"My child?"

Her hand instinctively moved toward her belly, but it met only emptiness. Tears welled fiercely in her eyes.

She clenched her jaw, trying to push herself upright from the bed, but the searing pain pinned her motionless.

"Mrs. Connolly, you're awake."

Rhonda entered swiftly, having just attempted to contact Zeke.

Wayne had asked if the hospital should take care of the baby's body or if the Connollys wanted to handle it themselves. Rhonda wasn't sure what to decide and kept trying to reach Zeke.

When she finally got through, the call was cut short. She tried once more, but his phone was already switched off.

Lily's career blossomed with remarkable success.Following the fashion design competition, her designs won wider recognition, and many renowned brands sought to work with her. Still, she resolved to further her studies abroad. At the airport, Herman and Margaret found it hard to say goodbye. Margaret, especially, was overwhelmed by tears."You're already so talented, Lily. Why do you feel the need to keep learning? We really hate to see you leave us again."Lily held Margaret close, trying to calm her. "Mom, I have so much more to improve on. Design isn't just talent. It's a journey of constant learning. I'll be back before long, okay?""Lily's right. She's not gone forever. She'll come back soon enough." Herman patted Lily's shoulder. His tone was sincere. "Take good care of yourself while you're away. Don't let anyone treat you unjustly.""Don't worry, Dad. I promise I will." Lily drew a deep breath and forced a small smile. "I have to board now.""Alright. Go ahead."Herman

Lily explained, "Each petal was so carefully blended with the garment that they became one. You wouldn't have noticed it! Now, it's plain for all to see who plagiarized whose work."I've called the police. They're on their way. You said it yourself, Sophie. Plagiarism isn't a small offense. You could end up behind bars!"As soon as she finished speaking, Sophie collapsed to the floor in defeat. When the police arrived, panic swept over Sophie. She gripped Zeke's hand while pleading, "Zeke, please don't let this happen. Save me!"Zeke was utterly disappointed in her. "Save you? How? Sophie, I gave you a chance to change, but you wasted it, and even tried to ruin Lily's career. You're simply dreadful!""Zeke, I didn't mean any of it. I just wanted you to see me in a new light, but I lost my grip. Please, trust me. I didn't do it on purpose!"From the edge of the crowd, Rhonda's voice suddenly rang out. "Ms. Lily!"Lily looked up. "Rhonda? What brings you here?""I came with some

Without warning, Zeke stepped forward. "I trust Lily. She's not the one who plagiarized."Sophie hadn't expected to see him here. She turned pale. "Zeke, what are you doing here?" she asked."Sophie, I never knew you could design for fashion. And now I'm wondering, how did you suddenly get so good at it?"He had been struggling to understand why Sophie had abruptly entered the world of fashion design. Now, the pieces fell into place. It was all a calculated scheme to frame Lily.Sophie's expression flickered.Lily hadn't expected Zeke to stand up for her. It was clear he wasn't here for Sophie today."You simply don't understand me, Zeke. I studied design abroad. Every one of these pieces was created by my own hand," Sophie protested."Is that so? Ms. Cruz, if these designs are truly yours, then you must have the design sketches. Would you care to share it with everyone here?" Lily asked. She remained poised. She had already predicted every possible outcome."Of course I do.

Sophie raised an eyebrow and crossed over to sit in the row reserved for Walker Group.Lily observed her, noting both the air of certainty and the seat she had claimed. Her brows drew together. Was Sophie actually "Cece", the one who had stolen her designs? She'd lost the sketchbook on the day she argued with Zeke. If anyone had picked it up, it should've been him. Could he have handed it to Sophie? The idea felt impossible. Why would he do such a thing? Unless he still had feelings for her.Lily's mind was in turmoil. The moment she saw Zeke take his seat at the judges' table, her face went cold. The host called, "Ladies and gentlemen, our fashion design competition will begin shortly. All participating designers, please go backstage to check your entries."Backstage, Lily's coworkers had already dressed a mannequin in her piece and were making final inspections."Lily, your design is gorgeous. You're definitely going to win a prize.""Yeah, even I want to wear it!""Thanks,"

From that day on, Zeke never sought Lily out again. Uncharacteristically, Sophie also kept her distance. In the CEO's office of Connolly Group, Zeke's assistant, Theodore Crane, stepped forward with a report."Mr. Connolly, I've looked into it. Sophie's now working at a design company, and she's signed up for next week's fashion design competition.""Oh? Is that so?" Zeke murmured, leafing through the file.He knew Sophie had once studied drawing. Fashion designing, though, was a surprise. She had gone to work at a design firm rather than the company he'd recommended. An uneasy feeling began to creep over him."There's one more thing. Ms. Rosenfelt has also signed up for the fashion design competition," Theodore said.A shadow fell across Zeke's face. "Didn't they invite me to be a judge for that competition?""Yes, but you declined."Zeke had been utterly absorbed in winning Lily back. Initially, he had no interest in being a judge. Now, with Sophie and Lily both competing, h

Within the walls of the Connolly residence, Victor and Erica sat on the couch. Their expressions were taut with simmering anger. Nearby, Zeke was kneeling motionless on the floor.None of them had the slightest inkling that Lily's baby was gone until Herman's call came."Zeke, you've made a grave mistake this time. I warned you long ago to sever your ties with Sophie, but you ignored my words. Instead, you took advantage of Lily's blindness by committing misdeeds right under her nose."And now, see the cost. You've lost the baby, and your wife is gone. My granddaughter was already eight months along, almost ready to enter this world…"Erica's voice faltered, and tears cascaded down her face.Victor's gaze burned with a harsh blend of anger and disappointment as he said, "Lily lost her sight for five years because she saved you. You've failed her, Zeke!"Tomorrow, I'm bringing you to her doorstep to ask for her forgiveness. We must bring Lily back, no matter what!""Mom, Dad, Lil
