Chapter 7

Author: White Kuromi
I clenched my jaw, forcing myself to stay calm while scanning the system for the source of the problem. Right now, I only have one thought in my mind, 'The data matters—I have to save it.'

What I did not realize was that several of my colleagues also ran back into the lab, and like me, they were already working with full focus. Our fingers moved skillfully across various instruments, each movement affecting everyone's nerves.

It was not until we heard the "System Restored" alert that our colleagues erupted in cheers. Everyone hugged each other with expressions of immense relief.

"It's done. Fault resolved," I said, letting out a long breath as I prepared to leave.

Suddenly, my legs gave out. It felt like my body turned to cotton—numb, weightless, no control. Everything became blurry b

I stood in the courthouse hallway, gripping the freshly obtained divorce papers, unable to calm down for a long time. The document in my hand felt weightless yet seemed to weigh a thousand pounds."Lucas." George's voice came from behind me.I turned around to see him standing there with a grave expression. I asked, "What is it?" George hesitated for a moment before speaking, "I just received word that Cody swindled money from your parents."I was stunned for a moment, then let out a cold laugh. "Is that so?"George's eyes did not leave mine. "Aren't you going to do something about it?"I shook my head, my gaze calm and unwavering. "They made their choice. Now they can deal with the consequences. I'll still send them a monthly stipend—that's my repayment for raising me. But anything else? I'm done."When I stepped outside the courthouse, the sunlight made me squint. I stood on the steps feeling an unprecedented sense of relief and freedom. Before heading back to the base, I lis

Cody's words cut through Kendra like a blade. She shut her eyes as memories surged like a tidal wave, every tender moment she once shared with me now turned bitter and painful. The guilt and heartbreak threatened to drown her from the inside.Dad pointed a trembling finger at Cody, his voice shaking with fury and disbelief. "Y-You ungrateful bastard! We raised you like our own son, and this is how you repay us?!"Cody met Dad's rage with a cold smirk, a flicker of disdain flashing in his eyes. He scoffed, "Repay you? I've bent over backwards trying to earn your love for years—I'm tired of it."His tone was full of weariness and impatience.Dad's complexion went ghostly pale. He staggered slightly, like he might collapse at any moment."You, you!" His voice cracked, full of pain, his eyes brimming with hopelessness.Cody's bitter laughter echoed through the hall, his grin twisting into something cruel. "Why did Lucas get everything? Why was he always the golden boy? A great famil

"Ladies and gentlemen," my voice rang out through the microphone, "I'm Lucas Baldwin. As you can see, I'm not this child's father."Gasps and murmurs erupted from the audience below. I caught a glimpse of Mom's and Dad's stunned expressions, Kendra's pale face, and Cody's panicked eyes."Three years ago, I left home to work on a national defense research project," I continued. My tone was calm, though inside, I was anything but. "But when I came back, I discovered my wife had a child with my brother. That little girl is already two years old."The room exploded into chaos.Dad shot to his feet, his face turning crimson as he charged toward the stage, fists clenched and eyes blazing. "You ungrateful bastard!" he roared, trying to climb onto the stage.Just then, a group of men in black suits appeared. They quickly stepped in, forming a solid wall between me and Dad."I'd like to see who dares lay a hand on Professor Baldwin," came the steady voice of George Murray, a senior pr

I opened my eyes just as the first light of morning touched the sky. It was the day Dad had his follow-up appointment at the hospital.I only recently found out he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and would need to take medication long-term. When I stepped into the living room, Dad was already sitting on the couch, waiting."Dad, let me take you to the hospital today," I said quietly. He glanced up at me with a cold expression. He replied stiffly, "No need. Cody's picking me up."I hesitated. "But I scheduled the appointment with a top specialist—"Dad let out a bitter chuckle. "You? Do you even have those kinds of connections? It was Cody's doing. Don't try to take the credit. You've been gone for years, and now you come back lying to our faces?"He added, "Lucas, try being honest for once. Stop trying to impress people by making things up."I stood there with my head bowed, silently swallowing his scorn. Before long, the sound of the front door closing echoed through the quiet

  • Gone for Good   Chapter 3

The city was still cloaked in that heavy darkness just before dawn as I slipped out of the house without a sound. The cold wind cut like knives, so I pulled my work jacket tighter and started jogging through the park.Sweat rolled down my face, but I did not care—only physical exhaustion seemed to dull the ache in my chest. As the first rays of sunlight stretched across the sky, I took a deep breath and turned back toward home.Just as I reached the edge of the neighborhood, I saw a group of familiar faces walking toward me, laughing and chatting.Mom and Dad were all smiles while Kendra walked arm in arm with Cody. He carried Eleanor in his arms, and they looked every bit like a picture-perfect family. They were all dressed to impress—Cody in a crisp, tailored suit, his hair neatly combed, not a strand out of place.I glanced down at my sweat-stained tank top and could not help but smile bitterly. I quickened my pace, trying to avoid them. However, Kendra spotted me anyway. She
