Chapter 2

Author: Dawnie
The woman was Tina Childe, an intern working for James.

When he first mentioned her to Lisa, he would talk about how unhappy he was with her—that she was slow, cowardly, and gave patients the wrong prescription.

Later, when James went abroad to celebrate Lisa's birthday with her, he spent the whole night supervising Tina as she did her rounds.

And when he finally hung up, James smiled at Lisa, praising Tina for improving and saying that she was cute.

Lisa's eyes were fixed on the candles, however, as she asked quietly, "Can you stop?"

James promptly stopped smiling, staying silent for a while until he quietly said, "Fine."

When she tried to casually bring up Tina later, he told her they weren't in touch anymore.

Clearly, he had lied to her.

-

It was snowing a little, so Lisa's clothes were wet when she arrived home.

She typed in the passcode deftly at the door—it was the date she and James started dating.

It opened as expected—James hadn't changed it.

The floor heater kept the entire interior warm, and as Lisa looked around, her eyes paused a long while at the glass shelf at the center of the living room.

Her heart clenched, and her tears started raining as the yellow light was illuminating the many plane tickets inside the glass shelf.

Each was arranged chronologically, and there were 988 of them.

James had proudly sent her a photo of it, calling it a proof of his love—that she would return home when he gathered a thousand.

Then, he would propose, after which they would live happily ever after and never be apart.

Lisa's heart was pounding harder and more painfully with each beat as she remembered the many nights she had spent abroad.

She was always at the library, working hard so that she could graduate sooner.

Her classmates called her a bore because she simply wouldn't spend time socializing, though she never minded, because she just wanted to return to James sooner.

She never told James when she fell sick from fatigue while trying to finish her thesis, popping a ton of pills like they were candy.

She would still smile at James like nothing had happened, telling him that she really, really missed him.

But now that she had finally returned home like he wished, reality told her that it was too late.

In the end, James' heart had changed.

-

When James got home and found Lisa trembling as she cried on her knees, he frowned and reached for her. "What's wrong?"

Lisa pushed him away, however.

Closing her eyes, she could feel her nails digging into her palms as she fought to stay calm. "I heard Tina over the call."

It took all her strength just to say those words, and she was heaving as she continued, "Why are you still seeing her this late at night?"

When she looked into James' eyes, all she found was coldness she had never seen before and a sense of utter weariness.

"Do you have to talk about that now?" he growled coolly as he straightened, suddenly keeping his distance. "We're just colleagues, and we bumped into each other. It isn't whatever filth you have in mind."

If they were just colleagues, then how would he explain that hug?!

Still, before Lisa could say it, James turned and revealed the jewelry box behind him and the beautiful cake in a velvet box.

He had to brave the snow to get both.

Lisa was dumbstruck, her heart skipping a beat as bitterness and delight both erupted at the same time.

That was until he said coolly and harshly, "Tina is a good girl—quit being so malicious toward her.

"She's also independent and hardworking, staying entire days at the lab… Unlike you, as you always complain to me how tired you are from your studies.

"She's also very rational and keeps everything personal out of her work—unlike you, as you always interrogate with suspicion.

"We're perfect partners. She knows me best."

Then, pursing his lips, he finished, "I still love you, Lisa, but I'm only human. Keep starting meaningless quarrels, and I'll get sick of it too."

And with that, he dropped everything into the bin, the white buttery cake crumpling into a pile of mess that was no different from their unseemly love.

After a long while, James closed his eyes, his voice restrained as he told Lisa, "Go… Right now."Lisa didn't hesitate as she leaped to her feet, straightened her clothes and headed for the door, which was opened on James' order. Before she left, he asked softly, "Is there no way to make things right?"His voice was raspy from the singe of alcohol, and he had his shoulders slumped in desolation.Lisa didn't answer, but he knew the answer. He laughed shortly, both at himself and in utter devastation, as he called out behind her, "Then don't forget me… And please don't hate me."-When Lisa left the hotel, dark clouds were blocking out the skies. Cool winds were pelting her right in the face, sending chills—it was really poor weather.Lisa's minds were blank, her fingers stiffly tapping between social media apps. After just a few steps, she noticed a van lurking in the shadows not that far away. The headlights were on, but it was too dim outside, and the glare obscured the bul

It was soon evening, and once Lisa entered the private room, she was stunned to see several safe deposit boxes left open on the table. There were stacks of cash in there, and from a brief glance, it really looked like it was worth ten million. However, that didn't delight Lisa at all.If anything, she sensed danger!Though she stopped and instinctively turned to leave, it was too late—the door was shut in her face and locked with an audible click.Lisa's eyes widened and she ran over, yanking the handles, but it just wouldn't open."Lisa…"Hearing James' familiar voice, Lisa couldn't hold back her rage at his stubborn persistence. "What do you want?!" she demanded. "Do you not understand what I said?! It's too late for us. I've already begun a new life!"James' dark gaze was fixed on her as if he was the victim. "Did you forget? It's my birthday—we promised we'd never miss each other's birthdays. "And do you see all that money? I've sold my hospital. That's all my life sa

If James was the envy of elite circles, then Finn Gooding was the peak of elitism that stood far above the rest.Despite being raised abroad, there were always rumors swirling about him in the country—or indeed, myths.Even his high IQ seemed insignificant compared to his achievements, as he founded a company at fifteen and became the leading authority of an entire industry in under a year.In fact, he was still technically a student now, even though his net worth placed him at the very top of the world's rich list."Try again, loser," James scoffed, not buying it—not when his chest hurt at the thought that Lisa had found someone a thousand times better than himself, and he had no chance of winning. For his part, Finn didn't waste time proving his identity, instead staring coldly at James as he warned, "Watch your mouth. And Lisa's not like you, completely unaware that you were cheating while being overly self-assured."I won't lie that I had my eyes on her for the longest time,

The album was cold, and the edges hurt as James brushed his fingers over it.Taking a deep breath, he walked up and pulled Lisa to his side.He was a little rough and forceful, but he was already restraining himself—heaven knew how much his jealousy and possessiveness flared up when he saw Lisa being with another man, threatening to blow him up right then."Lisa, I have a gift for you…" he said in a hushed voice. He thought Lisa would ask where he was and why he was gone for a couple of days without a word.To his shock, the first thing she said was instead, "Why are you still here? Didn't you leave already?"James almost failed to keep his smile right then, and he laughed dryly. "Why would I leave, darling?"He did his best to ignore the man as he held out the album to Lisa, saying earnestly, "I never left. I just thought I should prove how deep my love is to get you back. That was why I returned to our home, collected all the photos we took together, and put them into an album

James couldn't even remember how security chased him out.Somehow, he didn't feel rage or embarrassment… only utter disbelief.Lisa had never been so cold to him and was always relenting or tolerant. But he lost her. However, he also refused to give up—he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, and he would do anything for her to forgive him. That was why he waited for a long time, though it was not until the sun had set when Lisa finally stepped out of the conference hall. Her classmates were all smiles as they praised her inspiring presentation, gathering more investments than they had expected."Teamwork makes the dream work," Lisa simply said humbly.Standing in the distance under a tree, James smiled. That was the Lisa he knew and loved. He wanted to intercept her after her classmates left, but he hesitated and followed her home all the way to her apartment instead. He had to know where she lived so that he would have a better shot of getting her back!Seeing he

Perhaps someone up there still had his back, for James eventually found Lisa.He was standing with the spectators in the shade, while Lisa dazzled at the center of the stage. As the light brightened her silhouette and anointed her brilliance with a halo, she smiled with absolute confidence as she spoke about her project with immaculate eloquence and charisma. With her hair tied into a bun and her prim suit, the little locks that dangled only made her appear even more elegant.Even as James stared from beneath the stage, bedazzled, he thought to himself that Lisa had changed or indeed reverted to her old self before he met her.She was that dazzling when he wooed her, as bright as the sun and warming his heart. And yet, he disappointed her time and time again, reducing her to a shade of her former glory—paranoid, fragile, and forced to repeatedly question how much she mattered to him. Even as the painful thoughts swelled in James' mind, Lisa concluded her presentation to thunder
