Chapter 9

Author: Sunflower
Christian arrived on time for their dinner date on the eve of their wedding. He even brought an expensive bottle of red to add a touch of class to the evening’s dinner.

Just as the pair took a seat, notifications flooded Christian’s phone.

The next thing Christian knew, his phone blared with a call.

Christian glanced at the caller and rejected the call, but the ringing was persistent.

Tabitha observed Christian in composure.

“You should take the call.”

Christian stood up, his phone in hand. A brief moment later, he returned in a rush to grab his jacket and keys.

“Tabitha, I need to take care of some urgent business. Enjoy dinner. Don’t wait up.”

With his fading footsteps in the background, Tabitha smiled wryly to herself.

She finished her cold steak one bite at a time and took a couple of sips of the red wine.

Later, she checked her social media. Sure enough, Kelsey shared a new update.

Her post featured a photo of Christian on the rooftop, his eyes glistening with tears at the fireworks.

Kelsey posted, “A spectacular fireworks display for my loved one. I’m so glad he came.”

Tabitha locked her phone and rose to her feet.

She stared at the house, filled with three years of memories with Christian, then pulled out several large boxes to pack.

The whole process took her three whole hours.

The belongings carrying their three years of memories were sorted into three big boxes.

She burned everything without so much as batting an eyelash.

Throughout the night, Tabitha compiled all the messages Kelsey had sent and shared on social media onto a USB drive.

By the time she finished, it was the break of dawn.

Tabitha grabbed her stuff and set out for the wedding venue.

The venue had been transformed into a blooming garden, and joy filled the place.

Christian had gone out of his way to invite numerous media outlets to document the happiest day of his life.

Tabitha, dressed in white perfection, approached Christian. In contrast to Christian’s tearful eyes of anticipation, Tabitha felt nothing.

She took the microphone and handed the USB drive to the officiant.

“I’d like to present a gift to you before the ceremony, Christian.”

Christian grinned widely.

He was curious about the surprise.

As the officiant plugged the USB drive into the laptop for projection, his nerves got the best of Christian.

The content began to play on the massive screen.

Christian froze.

The screen didn’t show the sweet moments between him and Tabitha.

Instead, his chat logs and intimate photos with Kelsey were for all to see.

Reality fell on Christian like a bolt of lightning.

His eyes darted to Tabitha instinctively. He had some explaining to do.

However, the media were on him like sharks drawn to blood, snapping photos and pressing for answers.

Christian searched for Tabitha desperately until his eyes settled on one spot.

Tabitha watched in silence from across the crowded room as the mob swarmed around Christian.

She opened her mouth.

The words cut through the room, reaching Christian’s ears.

“It’s over between us, Christian.”

Giving in to her curiosity, Tabitha picked up the diary. While flipping through a couple of pages, she quickly sensed something amiss. She started to scroll back the dates. As Tabitha traced the entries back to the beginning, her heart beat out of her chest. It never occurred to her that Koben had been more than willing to marry her. From the moment Koben understood the meaning of love at the age of fifteen, his diary was filled with nothing but her name. He would always be right outside her home every morning to walk with her to school. Every weekend, Koben would often have an excuse to spend time with her. On multiple occasions, Koben was tempted to spill his true feelings. However, the fear of rejection held him back each time. He was afraid that he might even lose Tabitha as a friend. So, he took a step back and settled for a role as her best friend. When Tabitha fell in love with someone else, he moved abroad. Later, with Tabitha still heartbroken, he contact

Due to the massive fallout online, a criminal case was built against Kelsey for her malicious fabrication. With nowhere left to turn, Kelsey sought Christian for help. She was certain that Christian still cared about her, even if it was just a little. Surely, Christian would not leave her to die if her life was on the line. However, Kelsey couldn’t even secure a meeting with him. She broke down. Kelsey had always been Christian’s top priority. Yet somehow, here she was. In the end, she put all the blame on Tabitha. Kelsey believed that so long as Tabitha didn’t exist in the world, Christian’s heart would still belong to her. One night, Kelsey drove all the way to Bray Corporation. Kelsey had completely gone unhinged. She lingered around Bray Corporation for hours, waiting for the moment Tabitha would show up. That would be Kelsey’s cue to run Tabitha down with the car. Tabitha emerged when evening rolled around. The sight of Tabitha made Kelsey see red. Driven

Tabitha put the phone down, a heavy mood looming over her. To date, eight partners had opted to terminate their collaboration. At this rate, Bray Corporation would face financial damage beyond calculation. Not one to sit there and wallow in self-pity, Tabitha grabbed her car key and headed to a business partner’s office. Outside the office building, it took some convincing for Tabitha to get past the front desk. She picked up on a familiar voice while approaching the office. Tabitha took a peek inside, only to find Koben setting his pride aside and talking to the collaborator with a thick stack of papers in hand. “Mr. Fenoli, the data shows that Bray Corporation has huge potential in Port Haven. I hope you can give us one more chance. “Don’t you worry. It’d take so much more before Bray Corporation goes down. The Nashes are tied to the Brays in marriage. I will do everything in my power to pull the family through these hard times.” Richard Fenoli simply grinned without

Once Tabitha took the last bite of her lunch, Koben said, “Cassidy gave me a call yesterday. She’s got a craving for those pastries from the west side of town. Shall we head there after you get off work?” “Sure.” Tabitha nodded and started joking. “I check in on Nan every day, but you’re the person she thinks of when it comes to food. Oh, woe is me.” “Duh, I’m Cassidy’s favorite. Don’t be bitter,” Koben claimed with zero humility. However, blush rose across his cheeks. At the hospital, Cassidy perked up more than she did a while back. Maybe the fact that Tabitha had settled down became a great source of comfort to her. Cassidy stared at the newlyweds, her face beaming. Koben engaged in small talk with Cassidy. He would crack a joke every now and then, his quick wit making Cassidy chuckle. Peeling fruit at the side, Tabitha found herself smiling quietly. She must admit that the loving family moment she had always fantasized about came true with Koben. Tabitha

Koben was taken aback to see Christian there. After handing the lunchbox to Tabitha, Koben asked Christian indifferently, “What are you doing here?” Christian gave an attitude. “I’m here for my fiancée. Stay out of our business.” Koben replied amusedly, “Funny you should say that, because that actually makes it very much my business.”He pulled out his marriage license from his bag and presented it to Christian. “Take a look. “Your so-called fiancée is my lawfully wedded wife.” Convinced that it was another of Koben’s elaborate pranks, Christian rolled his eyes. He snatched the papers in annoyance. Before he could mock Koben, his gaze fell on the unmistakable blue stamp and print. “I-It can’t be…” His eyes bulged, and his breath hitched. Christian read the document over and again in disbelief, certain that the marriage license was the real deal. His hands shook violently. “How did this happen?” Ever since he started dating Tabitha, Christian dove into his c

Today was the day Tabitha and Koben would tie the knot at the city hall. Despite knowing it was nothing more than a marriage of convenience, Tabitha was too nervous to sleep.Tabitha got up early and washed up. After picking a respectable outfit, she drove to pick Koben up. Staring at the dark circles under her eyes, Koben chuckled for quite a while. When he lifted his chin, Tabitha caught sight of his eye bags too. Thanks to the shared dark shadows under their eyes, the mood lightened considerably during the drive to city hall. Everything went smoothly. A surreal feeling washed over Tabitha as the clerk finalized the paperwork. Just like that, she and Koben were bound to one another, even if it was only temporarily. Walking out of the city hall, Tabitha made a suggestion. “I heard that your parents are away on a trip, so you’re alone at home. Why don’t you move in with me?” Fearing Koben might decline, Tabitha added. “Don’t worry. There are plenty of rooms for you
