Lyra POV

I froze.

The question hung between us like a blade suspended mid-swing. Dorian's grey eyes were locked on mine, and behind the concern and the relief, I could see the gears turning.

I opened my mouth to speak, closed it, and opened it again as nothing came out. My brain, which had been perfectly functional five minutes ago— well, functional enough to make extremely questionable decisions in a cave — had suddenly forgotten how to construct a sentence.

Before Dorian could press further,

Lyra POVI was the last one down to breakfast. The dining room was already full when I walked in — Dad at the head of the table, Dorian to his right, Cassian across from him, and Leith beside Cassian. Morning light streamed through the tall windows and caught the golden silverware. Everything in this palace was gold. When they saw me, all three of my brothers rose. Dad stayed seated, but his eyes followed me across the room. Cassian winked at me while Dorian and Leith looked on quietly as I approached the table. “I’m so sorry for coming down later,” I murmured. “I lost track of time.”After I left Leith’s room, I went back to mine and spent almost an hour staring out at the grounds. I felt so drained I almost didn’t want to come down for breakfast, until the maid kept coming by. If I didn’t eat, it’ll raise suspicion. When I reached the table, Dorian pulled out m

Lyra POVI'd been in Leith’s room for ten minutes before he came back.I couldn’t sleep after the call with Elliot, no matter how many times I tried. Anytime I closed my eyes, I would see Leith, tied to the stocks with people gathered around him, hurling stones towards a wounded and bleeding Leith. Around him, people stood in numbers holding weapons as they hurled insults at him. Even now, just thinking about the dream filled me with fear. So, at dawn, I went to Leith’s room. His door was unlocked—as always. Leith never locked anything. He once said locked doors were for people who didn't trust the people they lived with, and I'd laughed then, but now it just felt like another thing about him that was too open for the world he lived in.His room was neater than I expected. The bed was made, the curtains pulled back, morning light filling the space. It was different from Dorian's room, which I'd only seen once—all dark wood, files, and books stacked like walls. Leith's room breathe

Lyra POV"Lyra?" Elliot's voice was groggy and confused. "It's two in the morning. Are you okay?""No," I said. "I need to tell you something. And you're not going to like it."A pause came from the other end. I heard him shift — sheets rustling, a lamp clicking on. When he spoke again, the sleep was gone from his voice."What happened?"I closed my eyes, hoping to say the right words without causing harm. Elliot was my friend, and Leith was my brother. “I—I know about you and Leith.” I started quietly. Another pause, longer this time, before Elliot spoke again. “I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Who is Leith?”I swallowed hard and spoke again. “You don’t have to play dumb, Elliot. Leith Moonshard. My brother.”Another round of silence passed before he sighed. “Fine. What about him?”“Asher has photographs of you and Leith that—” I trailed off, clearing my throat loudly. “And they don’t look good.”For more than a minute, he said nothing, and I almost thought he’d ended the c

Lyra POVI couldn't sleep. The palace was quiet — the kind of quiet that only came after midnight, when even the guards changed shifts in silence, and the corridors emptied out. My room was dark except for a thin line of moonlight cutting through the curtains and falling across the foot of my bed.I lay on my side, staring at the nightstand. The sealed box sat there, next to the stabilizer pills and a glass of water. My mother's box. Small, dark, no lock, no key. It was just smooth wood, holding a secret I didn't know how to reach.Tomorrow was the third day and Asher’s deadline. He'd given me three days to withdraw the case, drop the hearing, and come back to Ashford Dominion. If I didn't, he'd release the photographs of Leith and Elliot, out in the open, for every pack in every province to see and judge.I rolled onto my back and pressed my palms against my eyes.I'd told Jaxon I was going back. I'd told him my family agreed. Both lies. My family didn't know about the blackmail. Jax

Asher POVThe third family Beta family, left Ashford Dominion before sunrise.I watched from my office window as the Carvers loaded their truck in the dark—mattresses strapped to the roof, children half-asleep in the back seat, everything they owned crammed into a vehicle sagging under the weight. They didn't look up at the pack house as they drove through the gates. None of them ever did. That made twelve families in two weeks. Forty-seven staff members, gone. I turned from the window and sat down at my desk. Reports were stacked in front of me—border patrol schedules with names crossed out and left unfilled, alliance letters that went unanswered, and a formal notice from the Southern Province Council requesting a "status update on pack stability." That last one was a warning in formal language. I'd been an Alpha long enough to know what it meant. Get your house in order, or we'll question whether you should keep it.Jared walked in without knocking. He never bothered to knock thes

Lyra POVI dropped my hands and looked at her. My mother's face, aged and worn. My mother's eyes, bright and clear."There's something else," Mirenne said. She reached into the bag she'd set by the door — a worn leather satchel I hadn't noticed until now. She pulled a box from inside. It was small. Wooden, dark, with no markings on the outside. It was old, but well-kept. The kind of thing someone had held many times, carried carefully, and protected.“A month before your mother’s death, she knew she was going to die, and this doesn’t mean that she was a bad person, but she had a vision and a confirmation from a high Priestess. Her name is Priestess Maren. She predicted that your mother would die, but she could still live if ‘love would pull her through&r
