Chapter 2

Penulis: Flori
Even in the final moments of my life—when all I wanted was for my wife and daughter to stay by my side just a little longer—all I got were cruel words.

"If you hadn't torn Mom and Luther apart back then, none of this would've happened. Stop clinging to Mom already. She deserves to be happy," my daughter said.

"Just die. You're always guilt-tripping me. I'm so sick of it. Every time I want to do something, you use your 'kindness' to trap me. If Luther hadn't pointed it out, I almost would've fallen for your act again. This fire was just another one of your pity stunts, wasn't it, Blake?"

The two people I loved most in the world—my wife and daughter—stood over my dying body and said those words without a second thought.

I felt anger, despair, and sorrow. But in the end, all of it faded into numbness.

I watched helplessly as they ran off to another hospital room to take care of Luther, who only had a cold.

And then, slowly, I closed my eyes.

Thankfully, heaven gave me another chance.

So this time around, I'm done concerning myself with Samantha.

If she's hungry? The detention center feeds its inmates just fine.

During the days Samantha was detained, I cut off nearly every possible future intersection between us.

In my previous life, we had happened to get accepted into the same university. This time, I immediately changed my application and chose a university in Quintelle City instead.

As for everything else, I handled every detail carefully and made sure everything was arranged properly.

My original plan was to settle everything during those fifteen days, then go traveling with my parents once Samantha was released.

But unexpectedly, I saw her again at a class reunion four days later.

I guessed the police station had taken her upcoming SATs into consideration. They had probably just given her a light punishment instead of making things too difficult for her.

Even so, the fact that Samantha had been taken to the police station for theft had already spread everywhere.

At the reunion, most of our classmates looked at her strangely.

But that had nothing to do with me.

Still, the moment I saw the hatred burning in Samantha's eyes, I realized something. She had been reborn too.

The classmates were still chatting excitedly about their future university lives. The food hadn't even been served yet when the private room door was suddenly shoved open.

A yellow-haired punk stormed inside, glaring aggressively around the room.

"Blake, what the hell is your problem?!"

It was Luther Reese—Samantha's first love—a worthless delinquent with no future to speak of. I glanced at him indifferently and couldn't even be bothered responding to his accusation.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Samantha's eyes suddenly light up. I couldn't help recalling the twenty years of my previous life.

For all those years, Samantha had always looked at me with cold, distant eyes. No matter how much I did for her, no matter how much I sacrificed for her family, she had never once given me warmth in return. Even on the day our daughter was born, hatred filled her gaze.

Back then, I couldn't understand her expression. I thought it was simply her nature.

I believed her unhappy past had robbed her of the ability to feel joy. So I constantly tried to make her happy in every way I could. Whenever I received a bonus, I bought her gifts immediately. Whenever I had free time, I took her and our daughter out together.

Yet every time, all I got in return was the same response.

"What's so fun about it? Wouldn't it be better to spend that time enjoying some peace and quiet alone?"

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 11

The diagnostic report slipped from her hands and landed on her knees. The date on the report blurred as tears soaked through the paper. Then she suddenly laughed. Her shoulders shook as she laughed, her fingertips repeatedly rubbing the edges of the document."So you knew everything all along," she said hoarsely. "Then why did you still save me? Did it make you feel accomplished, watching me kneel in front of you?""I saved your mom," I replied calmly. "She treated me like her own son."I turned and opened the safe, taking out a bank card."There's eighty thousand dollars here. Enough for your mother to move into a place with an elevator."As for Samantha, I tossed a plane ticket toward her."The flight's tomorrow. To the Northwest Rehabilitation Center. Don't ever come back."Her hand trembled as she held the ticket. Then she laughed again."Blake, you're still the same soft-hearted person," she said. "Deep down, you know it—even if I rot in some gutter, you still can't trul

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 10

Luther was shaking a fruit knife in his hand as he charged at me, his eyes wild with hysteria. His entire mind was clearly unhinged.Celine instinctively stepped in front of me.In the split second the blade flashed, I shoved her aside. The sharp pain of steel piercing my palm made me vividly recall the burning flesh from that fire in my previous life. For a brief moment, clarity returned to Luther's eyes.Taking advantage of that instant, he turned and tried to run, but the arriving police pinned him to the ground.Blood dripped onto Celine's white shirt. Trembling, she bandaged my hand as tears fell in heavy drops.I suddenly laughed. So this was what real heartbreak felt like—enough to leave someone helpless and shaken.Luther was later sentenced to ten years for intentional injury. After that, Samantha knelt in front of me, endlessly apologizing."Blake… I was wrong. I'm so sorry. Luther is nothing but a complete piece of trash. Only now do I realize… you were the only on

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 9

"Blake, are you satisfied now? Watching me end up like this?!" Samantha said bitterly.I shook my head and casually handed her a coat."The child is innocent."What I didn't expect was for Samantha to slap it away."Stop pretending! You just want me to beg you so you can trap me for life! I'm telling you, Blake—you'll never succeed!"The interrogation room's fluorescent light buzzed overhead, casting a pale, sickly glow over her face.I suddenly remembered how she looked after childbirth in my previous life. Every day after work, I would rush home to comfort her, only to be met with her calling me a "murderer."Only now did I finally understand what she had meant. In her mind, I was the one who had killed Luther's child.I looked at her calmly."The only thing you did right was contacting me instead of your mom. You didn't let her lose sleep worrying. That's the only correct thing you've done."I studied her crazed expression, feeling nothing.Mrs. Creighton's health was alr

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 8

As for Mrs. Creighton, I had already done everything I could. After all, I was the victim. I couldn't allow myself to jump back into that same pit of fire again.Just as I had expected, Luther did not show up at the supermarket the next day to settle the bill. His earlier bravado had only been for show in front of Mrs. Creighton.I knew very well what kind of useless delinquent he was—he had no real abilities at all.In my previous life, in order to stop Samantha and my daughter from getting close to him, I investigated him thoroughly. The results were a mess of criminal records: theft, robbery, and even pimping. When I placed all of this in front of Samantha, she refused to believe a single word.Since that was the case, I would let her experience it for herself.…A month later, after returning from traveling with my family, I was sorting through assets and preparing for our move to Quintelle City. While I was restocking shelves at the supermarket, Mrs. Creighton arrived—li

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 7

I looked at the concerned expression on Samantha's face, and without warning, an image from my past life flashed through my mind.Back then, no matter why I got sick or how badly I was hurt, Samantha would only shoot me a cold look and say flatly, "If you're sick, go see a doctor. Don't just stand there getting in the way."Since when did she ever learn to care about anyone?I let out a bitter laugh and was about to leave when Mrs. Creighton came limping out of the house.Leaning against the doorframe, Mrs. Creighton looked at Luther sprawled on the ground in disarray, then at her daughter's furious face. Her eyes instantly welled up."Samantha, why are you still with that troublemaker? Come here!"Gentle Mrs. Creighton rarely raised her voice like that.In that moment, I finally understood. In my past life, when she pushed Samantha to marry me, it probably wasn't because she favored me at all—it was her desperate way of pulling Samantha away from Luther."Mom! He's not a troub

  • Goodbye. And Never Again   Chapter 6

Samantha's eyes turned icy the moment she saw me standing with her mother.Still holding Luther's hand, she strode quickly over and yanked her mother behind her, her tone sharp with hostility."What are you doing here?"I looked at her calmly. After twenty years of the previous life, I had long since understood exactly what kind of woman she was. Now, I no longer cared in the slightest what she thought. Because no matter what I did, she would always assume I had ulterior motives—always believing I was trying to tear her and Luther apart.I gently set down the bags in my hands, my tone steady."Mrs. Creighton, the things have been delivered. I'll be going now."With that, I turned to leave. It was time to part ways with Samantha."Wait!" Luther suddenly called out, a mocking smile on his face. "Blake, stop putting on an act. You think you're playing the good guy in front of Samantha's mom? I'm telling you, Samantha won't be fooled by you anymore."I stopped and glanced back at
