ALEX’S POV

I didn’t realize how tense I was until the meeting ended. The moment I stepped out of that boardroom, I loosened my tie and took a breath like I’d been holding it in for hours. The pitch had gone fine. Better than expected, actually – but my mind had been elsewhere the entire time.

Ava.

I checked my phone the second I got back to my office. Still nothing. No texts, no calls.

I scrolled through my recent calls. I’d tried reaching her three times between lunch and now. Not a single word back. I told myself not to worry. Maybe she was just overwhelmed – busy with PR damage control or caught in back-to-back meetings.

But something didn’t feel right. It was so unlike Ava not to answer my calls – or at least call me back right away.

Then I noticed a missed call from Sally. That was unusual.

I tapped her name and called back.

She answered immediately. “Alex.”

“Hey. I’ve been trying to get a hold of Ava. Is she okay?” I asked, already feeling that familiar pit forming in my

LAURA’S POVI pulled into the school parking lot with one thing on my mind — get Mason and get out. The whole day had already been a mess. My phone had been buzzing nonstop with news about Ava. The gossip was everywhere. Her face is all over the internet. Headlines dragging her down. The press was having a field day. I should’ve been celebrating — finally, the golden girl cracked. But I couldn’t even enjoy it properly. My nerves were shot because Jason had been ignoring my calls. Mason was the only reason I was here. I checked the time. He should’ve been out by now. I stepped out of the car, clutching my purse tight as I walked toward the front gate. Just as I reached into my pocket to call his teacher, something caught my eye, and I froze. I saw a familiar figure — Alex Grey. Standing tall, calm, like he owned the damn world. And my son — my son was right in front of him. Alex was crouched, stroking Mason’s head. Talking to him. Smiling. In a way that made my heartbeat pound lo

AVA'S POV The office lights were already dim by the time I stepped out of the building. Everyone had left hours ago including Sally. Even the janitor wasn't around only security was. My heels echoed against the concrete floor of the garage, each step heavier than the last. It had been a long, draining day. I was mentally exhausted, and emotionally wiped out. I just wanted to get in my car, go home, shower, breathe, and try not to cry myself to sleep. I reached into my bag and clicked my key fob. The headlights blinked once. As I walked toward my car, I heard my name. “Ava.” I stopped mid-step. That familiar voice. I turned around slowly, and my eyes landed on him – Jason. He was leaning against his car which was parked just a few feet away from mine. I wondered how he got in here this late. Ben was in the driver’s seat, engine running. He gave me a small polite nod but stayed inside. Jason walked toward me slowly like I was some wild animal he didn't want to scare o

AVA’S POV The moment his lips touched mine, my heart… just stopped. Not romantic. More like a sharp, paralyzing panic. I froze. For half a second, I didn’t move. My brain didn’t register what was happening – just the heat of his mouth, the scent of his cologne, and the taste of his lips. Then everything came rushing back – what he did while we were married, what he caused, the hell I’ve been dragged through. Then I snapped back. I shoved him hard with both hands and stepped back. My palm lifted before I even thought about it. Smack. The sound of the slap echoed through the empty garage. My palm stung, but I didn’t care. He didn’t even say anything. Just stood there, stunned, like he was the one who got hurt. I didn’t give him a second glance. I yanked my car door open, slid into the seat, slammed the door shut, and drove off. My vision blurred with angry tears as I sped down the road. Why did he have to come tonight? Why now? When I was finally trying to hold everything to

AVA’S POVI couldn’t tell her the truth. Not when her little arms were wrapped around my neck and her eyes were looking up at me with so much love and trust. Emma was too young to understand the mess happening around me — around us. The rumors, the tension, the whispers. I didn’t want to drag her into it. “I’m okay, baby,” I said softly, brushing her hair back. “Everything’s fine.” But I was lying. And I felt guilty the moment the words left my mouth. I hugged her tighter like that would make the guilt go away. Then I gently pulled back and kissed her cheek. “Can Rose tuck you in tonight? I have a headache, sweetheart. I just need to lie down for a little.” She looked a bit disappointed, but she nodded. “Okay…” I managed a small smile gave her bunny back to her and handed her to Rose before turning and walking back down the stairs. My head was pounding, but not from a real headache. Just everything spinning in my brain — Jason showing up, kissing me without warning, the slap

AVA'S POV I blinked. “A… date?” The word hung in the air like something too fragile to touch. We’d had lunch together. Dinners, coffees, runs, late-night drives. But it was always casual, and friendly. Nothing was ever labeled. Never a “date.” And yet here he was – Alex standing near my window with that serious, steady look on his face, asking me out like it meant something real. I didn’t know what to say. Alex was the kind of guy most women would call a dream. Handsome, wealthy, stable. The way he carried himself, the way he treated me – with respect, kindness, patience. I never had to worry about him stepping over lines or making me feel small. He wasn’t like Jason. Not at all. But I’d never pictured us dating. Not because I wasn’t attracted to him – I was. There were moments, late at night, when I’d catch myself thinking about how safe I felt around him… how his voice calmed my nerves. But love? Did I love him? Did I even know what love was anymore? The silence betwe

ALEX’S POV The drive home felt longer than it would have been. I kept one hand on the wheel, the other clenched against my thigh. The city lights blurred past the window, but I barely saw any of it. My mind was still back at Ava’s place – still stuck on the way she looked at me. Or rather… the way she didn’t. She hadn’t said no. But she hadn’t said yes either. Her silence had been louder than anything. And I’d seen the way her hand trembled when that call from Jason came through. She said she was done with him. She’d said it more than twice. But I couldn’t believe her anymore – not fully. If she truly wanted nothing to do with him… she would’ve blocked his number. Deleted it. But no, the name still popped up. Jason. Saved. Still there. Still reachable. It stung more than I wanted to admit. I pulled into the underground parking lot of my building, sighing as I turned off the engine. My chest felt tight like I’d been holding my breath for hours. Maybe I had. I didn’t know

AVA'S POV I woke up before my alarm, my eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. My head felt heavy like it had been stuffed with cotton. Last night kept replaying in my mind — Alex’s question, Jason’s kiss, the phone call from Sally, and that headline flashing across my screen like a punch to the gut. I didn’t know which part hurt more. The fact that I couldn’t give Alex an answer… or the fact that everything I built was crumbling in front of me because of baseless rumors. I didn’t even want to get out of bed. But I had to. I pushed the covers off and sat up slowly. My chest felt tight again. I hated waking up like this — with that weight pressing down on me before the day even started. I forced myself up from the bed, dragging my feet to the bathroom. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and barely recognized myself. My eyes were puffy, my skin pale. I splashed cold water on my face, hoping it would help me feel human again. It didn’t. After bathing, I hurriedly got re

AVA’S POV The lights were way too hot, even though the room itself was cold. I could feel the heat on my face and the back of my neck, but I didn’t mind. I sat up straight, calm and steady. My hands rested in my lap, no shaking, no fidgeting. I wasn’t nervous. I wasn’t scared. My smile came easy because I knew I had nothing to hide. Kara gave a soft smile to the camera and spoke in that practiced voice that sounded both kind and sharp. “Today we have an exclusive sit-down with Ava Taylor, an impressive designer and founder of Avaris Luxe, a company that recently entered the American market. "A woman who’s been praised for her talent… and lately, dragged into the headlines for everything but her work.” I already knew where this was headed. I met her gaze, nodded politely, and waited. No time wasted. Kara turned to me. “Ava, thank you for joining us.” “Thanks for having me,” I said, cool and steady, my lips curled into a small smile. She leaned in just a little, her voice

AVA'S POV I swallowed, unsure of how much to share. “Yeah… It’s been a lot.” His gaze never wavered. “I’m proud of you, Ava. For standing up for yourself. For building something of your own despite everything they threw at you.” Hearing those words – so simple, yet so genuine –hit me harder than I expected. I looked down at my hands resting in my lap, blinking back the sting behind my eyes. “I don’t know if I feel proud,” I confessed quietly. “It all just feels… exhausting.” “Survival usually does,” he said with a small smile. “But you built Avaris Luxe from nothing, Ava. You fought for yourself when no one else did. That’s something worth recognizing, even if you can’t see it yet.” I let out a slow breath, nodding. There was a lump in my throat I couldn’t swallow down, and a part of me hated how emotional I still got about everything. But maybe that was okay. Maybe I didn’t have to be so strong all the time. “And you?” I asked, shifting the conversation away from me bec

AVA’S POVThe next morning felt quieter than usual. It was the weekend. For once, my phone wasn’t blowing up with work emails or news alerts – just a single reminder flashing across my screen. “Visit Grandpa Campbell – 10 AM.” I stared at it for a moment longer than I should have, the guilt creeping in before I could even try to stop it. I’d promised him I’d visit a week ago when he had called me, but everything had spiraled so fast after the civil hearing that I’d lost track of time… and myself. No more excuses today. I needed to see him. I pulled myself together – simple jeans, a soft cardigan, and my hair loosely tied back. No polished version of me needed today, just… me. The Ava who used to spend hours in those gardens, who always felt at home in that house. And maybe the Ava who needed Grandpa more than she’d realized. The Campbell mansion looked exactly the same, standing tall and familiar, like time hadn’t dared touch it. But I felt different walking up to it, like

AVA’S POV His arms wrapped around me like he was anchoring me to the ground, like he knew I’d been holding too much for too long. I didn’t care that we were standing in the middle of the airport, people moving around us with rolling suitcases and curious glances. My face rested against his shoulder, and for a second… just one second… the weight I’d been carrying finally let go. It felt like peace, even in the middle of all the noise. “I missed you,” I said softly, the words catching in my throat. “I missed you more,” he murmured back. Neither of us moved. We just stayed like that, still and quiet. After everything that had happened, the familiarity of that moment was a kind of relief. Not dramatic. Not complicated. Just two people who’d been through hell and somehow found their way back to something steady. Eventually, he pulled back to look at me. His eyes scanned my face like he was making sure I was really okay. “You look good,” he said gently. “Tired, but good.” I ga

AVA’S POV Alex had texted me last night saying he was flying back today. I told him I’d pick him up from the airport and drop him home. His flight was landing in two hours, so I still had time. I went downstairs in my pajamas, hair pulled up in a messy bun. The smell of toast and eggs hit me before I even reached the kitchen. I could hear Mason and Emma chatting, their little voices echoing through the hall. “I said I’m Iron Man!” Mason shouted proudly. Emma giggled. “You’re not Iron Man. You’re Mason.” “Nope. I’m Iron Man today,” he insisted. I smiled to myself. That boy has always made the morning brighter since he started staying here. When I walked into the kitchen, they were already at the table. Rose was flipping pancakes at the stove. She looked over her shoulder and gave me a quick nod. “Good morning, ma’am,” she said. “Morning,” I replied, stretching a little. “Smells amazing in here.” Emma looked up, waving her fork. “Auntie Ava, Mason says he’s Iron Man.

AVA’S POV A FEW DAYS LATER It had been days since the criminal hearing. Days since Laura sat in court, raised her chin like a queen, and said “not guilty” like she really believed she hadn’t done anything wrong. I watched her from the second row. My hands gripped the edge of the wooden bench so tightly that my knuckles turned white. I was trying not to shake, trying not to cry, trying to keep breathing. The judge saw through her lies, though. Laura got two months. Just sixty days. Sixty days for everything she did to me and my company. It didn’t feel like enough, but at least it was something. Her past record helped. That, and all the evidence showing she planned every bit of it. But today wasn’t about jail time. Today was the civil hearing. This time, it wasn’t about guilty or not guilty. It was about what she owed me. What she took. The damage she caused. The lies she spread. The contracts we lost. The people who left me. The company I almost lost. Sally came with me again. S

AVA'S POV After I finished the toast and tea Rose brought me, I pushed the tray aside and tried to focus on work. I sat at my desk, opened my laptop, and stared at the screen for what felt like forever. I couldn’t stop thinking about Grandpa’s call. But I forced myself to type a few responses, go over one client proposal, and check in on the team chat. I was halfway through reading a file when it hit me – I hadn’t called Alex’s assistant again. I reached for my phone and dialed her number. This time, she picked up on the second ring. “Hello?” she said politely, but I could already tell from her tone – she knew it was me. “Hi, this is Ava,” I said softly. “Is Alex there? I need to speak with him.” There was a pause. I could hear voices in the background, muffled but tense. “Uh… he’s here,” she said, sounding unsure. Then I heard it – his voice, clear and low. “Who is it?” She hesitated, then answered, “It’s Miss. Ava.” A moment later, the phone changed hands. “

AVA'S POV I sat there frozen, the phone still pressed to my ear even after the call ended. Harold Campbell. I hadn’t heard that voice in years. Almost four now, I think. My heart was still pounding in my chest, like it didn’t know whether to be afraid or comforted. That deep voice brought back a wave of memories. Good ones. Soft ones. The kind that wraps around your heart like a warm scarf when the world feels cold. He used to call me “Sunshine,” and the moment I heard it again just minutes ago, I nearly cried. “Sunshine, is that really you?” he had said. And just like that, I replied, “Grandpa…” It slipped out so naturally. I didn’t even think. For a second, I was no longer the woman who’d been through hell and back – I was just Ava. The Ava who used to sit beside him in the garden, drinking sweet tea while he told me stories about the early days of Campbell Group. The Ava who always felt safe around him. “How are you, dear? I thought you’d forgotten all about me,” he

Then I heard a voice. “Ma’am?” I blinked quickly and looked toward the hallway. A figure stepped into view – it was Rose. I let out a long, shaky breath and leaned harder against the wall, pressing a hand to my chest. “God, Rose… you scared me.” Her face was tight with concern. “I’m sorry. I thought I heard something downstairs, then I noticed your car in the driveway. I didn’t realize you were just getting home.” “Yeah,” I mumbled, still trying to calm down. “Just walked in.” Her eyes scanned my face. “You okay? You look like you’ve been through something.” “I’m fine,” I said quickly, brushing hair out of my face. “Just tired.” She studied me a second longer, not buying it. “Are you sure, ma'am?" “Yeah. I couldn’t stop them, no matter how tightly I curled my fingers. He knelt beside me. “You’re bleeding. Let me see.” I held out my hands. He winced. “They pushed you hard, didn’t they?” I didn’t answer. My voice still hadn’t come back. My throat felt dry like I’d swallowed dust. My knees were throbbing, and I could feel the sting of open skin. “I chased them into the alley,” he said, opening my bag and handing me my phone. “Caught one. The other got away. But I got your stuff.” I looked down at my phone like it was a gift from heaven. My whole life was in there – messages, photos, important numbers I hadn’t written down anywhere else. “Thank you,” I whispered. He gave a small smile. “Don’t thank me yet.
