Lucas POV
They're gone.
I sighed when the elevator door closed on them.
Why do I feel like a part of me has left, too?
I stood from my haunches and slowly walked back to my office, passing the glass walls of department offices on my floor.
I could feel the weight of their stares, and it made me realize I had been too hasty and careless.
I made Katherine an easy target for gossip.
Now, how do I counteract that one?
I remembered the me
Lucas POVAfter Greg Combs dropped the bomb that Katherine is my mistress within earshot of my employees, I knew I needed to do something. I did not know what came over Combs to rush out here and demand to see Katherine. The only consolation in this unfortunate situation was that Katherine and Combs did not meet outside the office. If that happens, I don’t know what other lies the latter would spout to make it look like Katherine was the problem in their relationship and not the other way around. Now, I need to apply remedial steps to save Katherine's face at least. I called Oliver, and thankfully, he came right up immediately. “I heard what happened with Combs outside the building.” He said stiffly after Dan ushered him in.I sighed when I saw him. I noticed he was still mad at me, but that is unimportant right now. Helping Katherine maintain her reputation is. “I need you to do something for me.”“What?” He asked, looking disinterested. “Can you do a press release about Erin
Katherine POV"I knew it. Your daughter is just part of Mr. Sanders’ PR campaign - a tool to make his company more trustworthy in the public eye."I clenched my fists as Noreen tried to disparage my daughter. It would have been okay if it was just me. But Erin is here, hearing everything. I don't want her to think Lucas sees her as just part of the business. "Will you quit it, Noreen? You keep harping about things that do not concern you." I hissed in a rare display of standing my ground. Noreen scoffed.“Why? Does it hurt your pride to know that you and your daughter are just part of our boss’ grand scheme to make him look good in the public eye?” Noreen shot back, looking quite smug. “Tsk! Tsk! Poor Katherine.” She said, making me clench my hand into fists. To my horror, I heard Erin’s voice interrupting us. "Are you fighting?" Erin asked when she pulled her headset away from her face. She had this frightened look on her face that alarmed me. That has been the last straw. I
Lucas POV“She had an accident five years ago,” Kurt reported. In my hands, I was looking at hospital reports and winced.“She stayed two months in comatose,” I said dully, unable to perceive Katherine in such a state.Just thinking about it leaves a constriction in my chest. I could not breathe when I thought about what she had gone through.“Now, that explains why she did not know us. She was not faking it.” Oliver pointed out.His comment made me feel worse. And to think that I branded Katherine as a great actress for keeping up the pretense of cluelessness when she, in fact, did not know us.I shook my head. I feel like a j*rk for thinking so poorly of her.Maybe she just did love Combs so much that she chose him over me. It was just unfortunate that she had an accident right after she ran away with him.“The hospit
Katherine POV“Katherine." My body froze when I heard him call out my name. I just got out of the cab with a sleeping Erin in my arms. I pulled Erin close and kissed her head, ignoring the call. "Here, let me." He offered to take Erin from me, but I refused. I avoided him when he made a move."It's not necessary. I can take care of my daughter alone." My voice sounded clipped, too cold even to my ears."I want to talk to you." He told me. I ignored his presence and pretended that I heard nothing. I walked faster, though it was a struggle because of my little girl. Then, I reached our apartment building and had to pause to ring the bell. The building administrator greeted me and opened the door wider to let me pass. "Ms. Fielding, is he your companion?" The administrator stopped me in my tracks. "I am her husband." Greg volunteered before I could respond.I sighed, hating for an argument to ensue and disrupt Erin's rest. “How is she?” He asked.I didn’t bother to reply. He
Katherine POVMy brows furrowed. “Sorry for what?” Greg had so many things to apologize for, and I wanted to be clear about what he was apologizing for. “For everything.” He made a flick of his hand. “The divorce, Noreen, for failing to protect you from my mother’s wrath and for treating you and Erin poorly when I promised to be the best husband and father. I am sorry.” I did not expect this, and my heart began to thud painfully in my chest. Tears welled in my eyes, and I bit my lip to stop the sob from coming out. I inhaled deeply, filling my lungs with air until it hurt. “You don’t belong to me. The two of you. I can’t love Erin because I know when your memory comes back and you remember who Erin’s father is, the two of you will leave me for him.” I sighed. “So, you turned your affections on Noreen,” I concluded bitterly. Greg looked away. “Noreen was my ex-girlfriend.”I shook my head, clearly intrigued. “I don’t understand. What does that have to do with everything?
Katherine POVI woke up to the urgency in Erin's voice. “Mommy, you have to wake up!” She called out. Automatically, my eyes opened a crack, and I saw her face inches from mine. I hugged her and planted a soft kiss on the top of her head, but she started wiggling after a while.“You need to help me.” She said with her brows furrowed.“About what?” I asked groggily. I still feel a heaviness in my heart after Greg’s revelations last night. It must be from too much crying. I tossed and turned in bed last night, trying to figure out that part of my past that I still can’t remember. Somehow, I wanted to fill my head with the memories of my parents. I urged myself to remember them, but unfortunately, I couldn’t. “Mommy, you are not listening,” Erin complained, lips pouting while she pierced me with her black coals that seemed so familiar.“What is wrong?” I asked to pacify her. Erin picked up her tablet from the night table and pushed it toward me. “I think there is something wrong
Katherine POVIt was around lunchtime when Noreen suddenly came to my office. I already thought that I had seen the last of her. I thought she had enough of my slap, but it seemed she hadn't. Maybe she was asking for more. I grinned inwardly at the thought and bent my head to be less conspicuous. “I heard that Greg dropped by your apartment.” She said.I did not respond, but her tone made me look up to see her glaring at me. My brows knitted in irritation. Here she goes again, coming to my turf to start an argument. I continued signing documents, ignoring her. “I didn’t know that you have become a surveillance camera now. Anyway, you are late. That happened two weeks ago.” I retorted, mocking her, but did not make it a point to look in her direction again. Noreen, being the spoiled brat that she is, hated the idea of being dismissed. Ignoring her is her pet peeve because she thrives on attention and pampering. “I am talking to you. The least you could do is to look at me.”
Katherine POVNoreen’s nostrils flared, and her face contorted in anger.“You bitch!” she snarled, making her face ugly. Then, she lunged at me to get my phone. It was at that exact moment when Lucas Sanders, Oliver Mans, Mr. Jacobs, and Veronica came in. They saw what happened and were all outraged, except for Noreen’s father, who stood by watching the furor. Lorrie also looked like a frightened rabbit. She was in the corner, eyeing the two of us with disbelief and shock in her eyes. Then, I felt Lucas came to my rescue immediately. He pulled Noreen’s hands away from me. I could feel his body heat, his scent filling my nostrils. My heart skipped a beat. “What are you doing, Ms. Jacobs?” He grabbed Noreen’s hands when she tried to claw at my face and threw her off. She staggered, but Lucas Sanders was not about to be thwarted, even in the face of Noreen’s father, who only gasped and came to the rescue of his daughter. “It’s her fault, daddy!” Noreen cried when her father’s
Katherine POVI woke up alone in bed and felt slightly disappointed when I realized Lucas was gone. I turned to the side to hug the pillow he used on my chest, wishing it was him. It would have been nice to wake up and see him first thing in the morning. I was jolted from my daydreaming when the door to my room opened. Lucas entered the room with Erin in his arms. “Mommy!” Erin called out in a singsong voice. I watched her wiggle from Lucas’s arms. When her feet reached the floor, she began to run toward me. She climbed the bed and sat next to me. “You and Daddy sleep without me.” She complained. My eyes met Lucas above Erin’s head. Then, I turned to my daughter to mumble an apology. Erin shrugged. “It’s okay. Daddy promised we would sleep together tonight. You, me and Daddy.” Erin reported. The idea excited me. I began to caress Erin’s head to hide the pleasure the news brought. “Have you eaten?” I asked She bobbed her head. “Me and Daddy.” Then, she stood on the bed to tu
Katherine POV“I am sorry. I shouldn’t have stooped down to her level,” I told Lucas stiffly as we walked back to the bus.Until now, I could still hear Agatha’s rants and the expected whispers from our onlookers. If truth be known, hitting her and putting her in her place gave me immense satisfaction. Agatha shouldn't have insulted my daughter because that is where I draw the line.I felt a tug on my hand, prompting me to stop.“Agatha had it coming. You shouldn’t feel any regret.” Lucas told me.He held my chin and stared deep into
Katherine POV“Well. Well. Well. The sarcasm in Agatha Richards' tone was keenly comprehensible, especially if one cared enough to listen. Agatha was walking out of the function room at the same time we did. And because all doors lead to the lobby, we sort of ended up meeting in the middle. There is no way I could have avoided her, even if I wanted to. Then, she dropped the bomb that put me in the spotlight. “If it isn’t the fiance stealer.” She looked at me up and down, and her nose wrinkled in distaste as if she did not like what she saw. I know I am not as sophisticated or glamorous as her. I looked down the denim overalls I wore at the tree planting project and knew that compared to Agatha, I looked very ordinary. But Lucas’s hand, when it searched for mine, felt very comforting. I knew Agathaa saw how he held my hand and squeezed it. The action sent a signal that he was trying to silently assure me. This seemed to ignite Agatha’s anger. “How does it feel to be taking my
Katherine POV“Put me down, Daddy!” Erin said, and Lucas swung her in his arms before he placed her feet firmly on the ground. “Thank you, Daddy.” She said sweetly before latching onto his hand. She gripped his thumb before she turned around to search the crowd. When she spotted me, she beckoned to me and said, “Come on, Mommy. Let’s go.” There were still some employees in the area, and as much as I would like to clamp a hand on Erin’s mouth, I couldn’t. I have to take everything in stride, just as Lucas had. No flaunting, and certainly no keeping secrets. I was just making things as natural as is. We can not hide forever. And from the looks of it, Lucas had no intention of hiding us either, especially Erin’s existence. I walked up to them. My breath hitched when Lucas snaked his arm around my waist and started gearing me toward the bus. At some point, Erin dropped his hand and ran toward Oliver. “Uncle Ollie. Wait up!” Oliver, who was walking with Veronica, stopped t
Katherine POVI turned around to face Veronica, but she was already walking away. Then, my eyes squinted when Oliver blocked her path. I saw the tension in her body and thought I was not the only one who needed some explanation. Veronica also has to explain the tension with Oliver. From the looks of it, something is brewing between them. “Stare at him longer, and I was an inch from getting jealous, sweetheart.” Lucas' breath fanned my cheeks when he leaned close to murmur in my ears. I stepped to the side to allow distance between us, consciously aware of the people around us. I don’t want to add fuel to our grand entrance. Lucas’ employees already had something to talk about. But my action sent the wrong signal to Lucas. “Why are you avoiding me?” His eyes squinted in suspicion. I rolled my eyes. Here he goes again. “Shh,” I said, trying to hold him back from further incriminating the two of us.“What?” Lucas demanded when he saw me looking from left to right. Then, he sh
Katherine POVWhen we left the apartment building, I was surprised to see a bus with an SF conglomerate logo waiting for us.“Whoa! What’s this?” I asked, not fully comprehending what was happening.Dan Burns got out of the bus to assist us.“Hi, Uncle Dan!” Erin greeted, seemingly unaffected by the sight of the bus.In contrast, Erin looked excited. She was clapping her hands, and her legs danced owing to her undisguised eagerness to jump on the bus.I adjusted the strap of her sun visor before allowing her to hop on the bus. Her laughter rang like a peal of bell as Dan held her hand to help her up.The sounds of her laughter were music to my ears. For the past two years, our lives have been filled with sadness due to Erin’s sickness. I used to ask God why he allowed such a misfortune to come to us, but now, seeing the joy on Erin’s fa
Katherine POVWhen we got tired of our game, Sara called us for dinner. Lucas snagged Erin from the bed, and she climbed on her father’s shoulders. He held her hand, crisscrossing like a plane on their way out. I followed them with my eyes, my lips tugging into a smile when I heard Erin’s giggles. Seeing how happy my Erin had been since Lucas came into our lives made me feel contentment in my heart. Looking at her, you wouldn’t see any trace of a sick child. She was recovering and adjusting to our set-up faster than expected. “Thank you,” I whispered to Lucas’ ear after we put Erin to bed. She was now snoring softly when I tucked the covers below her armpits. I placed bolster pillows on her side. We had a hard time convincing her to lie down. Erin insisted on Lucas reading her a story before bedtime, and he indulged her.I sat on her side, listening to their interaction. She cuddled close to Lucas’ chest, listening intently, and from time to time, she would interrupt him to p
Katherine POVJust like the other previous kisses we shared, it was explosive.I do not know how he does it - arousing my passion.“Lucas!” I gasped when his hands began exploring, touching places he shouldn’t.“You are taking advantage of the situation,” I complained when he pulled his lips away, but not his hands, which were gently stroking my br*sts from under my shirt.“You started it.” He groaned.I looked at him sharply before pulling his hands away from my bre*sts.“You were angry, and I don’t know how to reach you. I felt like I was losing you.”He chuckled. “I may feel disgruntled and dismayed over certain issues, but I will not leave you, alright? I already lost you and our daughter once. I do not want you to slip through my fingers again.”I bit my lip, feeling a tightness in my chest a
Katherine POVAt first, he was resistant, but I refused to let the lukewarm response discourage me. I closed my eyes and kept pushing, nibbling, and sucking on his lips while my hands caressed his face. While I was a newbie to this, I persisted, knowing I needed to make amends. Lucas needed my assurance, and I intended to give him that. Today, I felt the need to be bolder. To take charge and not just become an unwilling participant. A wave of shyness threatened to overtake me, but the need to prove to him that I was here weighed more.I kept pushing until desperation fueled my action. And then, it happened. Lucas began to respond. He kissed me back, sending a surge of triumph. At last, he reacted positively to my advances. But before I could savor and rejoice the moment, he pulled back.Confusion clouded my senses, and I raised hurtful eyes at him. Am I being rejected?Did he already give up on me?Lucas must have sensed my confusion and rubbed my lips with the pad of his thu
