Scarlett’s POV.

By Friday morning I had convinced myself I could survive one more day. The weekend was practically within reach. I repeated that to myself until the words lost meaning. One more day—just one more day.

I had worn that phrase thin until it had no weight, until it stopped comforting me at all.

Peter Blaine met me at the doorway the way he always did: overtly warm, a practiced friendliness that did not reach his eyes. He leaned against the frame as if he didn’t have a single care in the world, speaking in a smooth voice that made me more than just uncomfortable. “Morning, Scarlett. You look bright today.”

My reply was automatic. I kept my shoulders straight and my tone flat. “Good morning, Mr. Blaine. I’ve already started on the floor plan you asked for. I’ll have a draft by the end of the day.”

He walked into the room and stayed. People give hints when they want to be left alone; he ignored mine that were blatantly obvious. He talked about productivity and dedication, and

Leon’s POV.Scarlett lay on the hospital bed, her face pale and damp with sweat, her hair stuck to her temples. The nurses worked on either side of her, moving in a practiced rhythm, their hands steady as the doctor gave calm, yet firm directions. The lights above her made everything sharp and unreal. And then there was me—utterly useless, gripping her hand as if that could somehow help her through the pain.I’d faced blood before. Screaming, chaos, the kind of emergencies that could unmake a person. But this was different. This was her. This was the woman I loved, bringing our children into the world while I stood there, helpless, and doing everything I can not to fall apart. Her grip on my hand tightened agai and her knuckles went white.“Leon—” Her voice broke.“I’m here,” I whispered in an attempt to sound soothing, leaning closer. “I’ve got you.”She let out a sharp sound, half a gasp, half a sob. Her whole body shook as she tried to push through another contraction. The doctor’s

Scarlett’s POV.For a moment, Leon just stood there, staring at me as if he hadn’t heard what I said. Then the realization seemed to finally hit him.He blinked once, looked down at the floor, and froze completely. His face went pale.“Scarlett—” His voice caught halfway through my name. “Your— you— it’s—”“My water broke,” I said again, keeping my tone even.He spun in a small circle, eyes darting between me and the puddle forming beneath my feet like he wasn’t sure which problem to handle first. “Okay—okay, right. Hospital. Towels—where are the towels?”He tripped over the leg of the chair, stumbled, caught himself on the table, and swore under his breath.I couldn’t help but smile. “Leon, you can relax. It’s alright.”He turned sharply, still looking horrified. “Alright? You’re going into labor!”“Yes, and that’s why we need to get to the hospital.” I tried to keep my voice calm, like I was talking him through a hostage situation. “Can you please grab a towel?”He moved before I fi

Leon’s POV.Sleep never came easily.I spent most of the night staring at the ceiling, my mind looping through the same moment over and over again—the way Scarlett’s eyes had flickered between surprise and quiet acceptance before I kissed her. That heartbeat of hesitation that could have gone either way.For a split second afterward, panic had surged through me. I’d half expected her to pull away, slap me, tell me I’d crossed a line. But she hadn’t. Instead, she’d looked at me like she was still trying to decide if what happened was real. Now, in the daylight, the memory carried less of the chaos and more of the strange calm that followed. I hadn’t planned on kissing her. It wasn’t part of anything I’d told myself I was ready to do. But for once, logic hadn’t led—I’d just acted. And I didn’t regret it.Scarlett didn’t seem angry. Conflicted, maybe. But not angry. That was enough for now.I pushed off the sheets and sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing a hand over my face. The sky outsi

Scarlett’s POV.The ride back to the beach house was quiet. Well—sort of.Ezra hummed along to something faint on the radio, pretending not to notice the heavy silence between Leon and me. The only other sound came from the road beneath the tires and the soft clinking of the glass bottles in the small cooler beside him.I kept my hands folded over my stomach, focusing on the twins’ faint movements instead of the heat still lingering on my lips. Every time I replayed that moment on the yacht, my pulse jumped. I wasn’t sure what shocked me more—how easily it happened or how right it felt in that instant.Leon didn’t bring it up. He sat beside me, composed as always, looking out the window as though he hadn’t just crossed a line we’d both been carefully dancing around for weeks.Ezra caught my eye once in the rearview mirror, grinning like he knew exactly what had happened, but Leon shut him up with a single look. That ended the conversation before it could even start. When we reached th

Scarlett’s POV.Leon hadn’t said much that morning. His focus stayed fixed on his phone while he ate breakfast, his eyes moving too quickly across the screen, jaw tight in that familiar way that meant his mind was somewhere else entirely. He asked if I’d slept well. I told him I had, which was the truth. When he looked at me, he smiled like everything was fine. It wasn’t a lie, not for at the moment—exactly. But he just gave me one of those careful looks he used when he didn’t want to be questioned. The kind that told me he was carrying more than he was saying out loud.I watched him check his watch for the third time in ten minutes before setting my fork down. “You’re quiet today,” I said.“Just a few things to sort through,” he replied. His tone was even, practiced. “It’s nothing important.”He didn’t meet my eyes when he said it.I could’ve pushed. I didn’t. There was something about the way his hand lingered over the phone, like he was expecting it to ring again, that told me what

Leon’s POV.“Sir, we found it under the handle of her suitcase,” Ezra explained, his tone careful. “The tracker’s advanced and fairly well hidden. It took the team a while to figure out where it was hidden. But point being, Sir… Whoever planted it seemed to be well experienced in following their target.”Who was no doubt Scarlett. The mere thought made my gut twist horribly.I kept my eyes on the horizon through the window instead of the evidence bag on the table between us that Ezra had brought in. The sea stretched wide and empty beyond the railing, calm in a way that didn’t fit the way the morning felt.“How long do you think it was there?” I asked.“Before we left the city,” he replied. “It could’ve been slipped on while the luggage was being loaded onto the jet or even before we left the mansion. I had security sweep every inch of the property before we left, but it is possible they have slipped up again like when someone got into the nursery. Clearly, this person is smart. So sm
