Chapter 29

Scarlett’s POV.

I lay curled on Olivia’s small couch, the scratchy blanket pulled over my legs, my phone screen lighting up the shadows of the living room.

My bank balance hadn’t changed.

I had refreshed the app four times in the last ten minutes, as if the numbers would magically shift while I stared.

But the truth didn’t change: I didn’t have enough to move out. Not for a place of my own. Not for rent and groceries. Definitely not enough for a child.

I closed the app and dropped the phone onto my chest.

It was quiet in the apartment. Too quiet.

Olivia’s boyfriend had started spending more time here, which was fair—it was her home, not mine. I was just the temporary guest she didn’t have the heart to push out.

But I couldn’t keep living like this. I had to find a way to stand on my own again. Not just for me, but for the child growing inside me.

I had to find a job.

My hand drifted to my stomach.

It still didn’t feel real. There was no bump, no movement, no physical change. But I kne

Leon’s POV.The report came in earlier than expected.Ezra’s voice was steady over the phone, but I could hear the tension under it. “We found the transfer. Fifty thousand. Wired through a shell corporation out of Nassau. Set up two weeks ago, used once.”I stood by the window in my office, looking out over the estate grounds but seeing none of it.“Is it traceable to Dahlia?”“No,” he answered. “Not directly. Whoever built it used a lawyer three layers deep. No connection to the Stones or their businesses. But the timing is suspiciously coincidental.”Too coincidental to ignore. “And so well hidden that someone wouldn’t get caught.”“It appears so, Sir,” Ezra agreed.“Thank you, Ezra. Keep digging and see if you can find anything else on him” I instructed. “Also, follow the legal registration trail of that transaction. Someone handled that money. I want a name.”I hung up, but the tightness in my chest didn’t fade. What kind of people would go this far to destroy someone? Was it beca

Scarlett’s POV.The car was silent on the ride home.Leon didn’t say a word. Neither did I. I kept my eyes fixed on the window, even though I wasn’t seeing anything outside. My hand rested over my stomach. I wasn’t hurt, but I couldn’t shake the pressure in my chest—the weight of everything I now knew.Dahlia had sent him.I’d known she or Caden was behind it. They murdered me in my past life. It didn’t surprise me that one or either of them would sink even lower and attempt to harm me again—or the baby.“She made me do it,” he’d said. “Just hard enough to make her fall.”And that was exactly what happened.Leon glanced over. “Do you believe him? Do you really think Dahlia is behind it?”I didn’t look at him. “Yes.”He didn’t press me for more. But I felt the shift in him. He fell quiet, and he had that thoughtful look taking over his expression.Just as I began wondering what he might be thinking, he reached for his phone and called Ezra on speaker. “Ezra?”“Yes, Sir. What can I do f

Scarlett’s POV.The world tilted for a moment as my body hit the floor.I felt the impact sharp in my tailbone and shoulder, but I didn’t cry out. Not when I knew everyone in the room was staring.Phones were already pointed my way, no doubt recording. A few of the guests gasped, while others started whispering among themselves. But they weren’t my main concern at that moment.I was focused on the hand that shoved me—and the coward trying to disappear into the crowd like nothing had happened.I would not stand for it.I pushed myself up on one elbow and lunged forward, my hand snapping out and grabbing hold of a sleeve. The person froze, startled, then twisted violently to break free.“Oh, no you don’t!” I didn’t let go. “You’re not going anywhere!”It turned out to be a man—and he was panicking.I could feel it in the way his muscles tightened, the way he didn’t look my way once—as if trying to hide his identity.“What is your problem?” I snapped. “Why are you doing this?”His respon

Scarlett’s POV.Leon’s hand remained curled around mine, not speaking right away. He just looked at me, gaze assessing. Then he gave the smallest nod.“I should’ve come sooner,” he spoke quietly. “I won’t let you be cornered like that again.”His tone was matter-of-fact, but there was something behind it. It sounded a lot like frustration, regret—and guilt.Taken aback, the smile slipped from my lips. I honestly didn’t know what to say to that, so I just nodded. He added, “From now on, you don’t come to places like this alone. Not since you seem to constantly be the main attraction for bullies. I won’t stand for it anymore.”That stopped me. My chest tightened for a moment, and I wasn’t sure if it was because of what he said, or the way he said it—like it wasn’t up for debate. Like I was someone worth protecting.Across from us, Olivia watched the exchange with a strange softness in her expression. For once, she didn’t crack a joke or roll her eyes. She just gave me a small smile befo

Scarlett’s POV.The silence that followed was notable.I lifted my gaze, scanning the crowd that had gathered around us. Every face was frozen—like they were all holding their breath at once. The man who’d torn the necklace from my neck stood among them, wide-eyed and pale, panic etched across his face.I recognize him now—now that I can see his face clearly. He used to be the class clown, the one who thought it was hilarious to superglue my chair in the middle of a lesson. I normally would shudder at the memory when I thought about it.But right now, with Leon still holding my hand and with the fear in the man’s eyes, I felt grounded.Safe.I smiled to myself, unable to help it. I could have remained quiet and not say anything. But I was fed up with being trampled on.I raised my free hand and pointed straight at him.“It was him.”Leon didn’t say anything as he nodded at one of the bodyguards that came in with him. The bodyguard moved fast, barreling toward the man I’d pointed out.

Scarlett’s POV.“You’re seriously throwing me out because you think this necklace is fake?” I asked, placing a hand on my hip and another defensively over my belly. “Since when is that acceptable?”The two security guards exchanged a quick look, appearing uncomfortable.I didn’t give them the chance to stumble through a weak excuse. Instead, I reached into my handbag, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen. The digital invitation was already open—I’d expected something like this. I held it up for both guards to see.“Here’s my name. Here’s the university seal. Here’s the RSVP code they sent me two weeks ago. You want me to scroll through the entire email thread as well?”A wave of whispers swept through the room. I didn’t bother turning to the growing crowd behind me. “You were saying?” I asked pointedly, eyes locked on the taller guard. He glanced away. Of course, just like back when I attended Glenhurst—when someone would do something wrongful toward me, it would be deemed accep
