Chapter 1606

Author: Cozy Season
"What happened?" Debra pressed.

"Some people from the Illuminati murdered him," Ryan replied, full of hatred.

Debra raised an eyebrow. "Why would they murder him?"

"Because he wouldn't work with them." He wiped his tears. "I know you. They're after you. Help me avenge my dad, and I'll do anything to repay you."

"Deal," she said, her grin widening.

He relaxed, but she whipped out her gun, aiming at him. "Too bad I don't buy a word of it."

Before he could react, the guards rushed up and pinned him down.

Debra stepped closer, tapping his cheek with the gun barrel. "What's up? Go on with your act. Those clowns are naïve enough to think I can be fooled by a kid like you."

"I'm not with them. You've got it wrong." Ryan panicked.

"I picked Kurtis for a reason," she said. "I've got his whole file. He traded organs on the dark web and had dirty deals with the Lowe Group. You're telling me he wouldn't roll with the Illuminati?"

She pressed the muzzle under his chin, forcing his head up

Ryan was pale and sweating, jumping at every sound."Ryan Atkinson?" Debra asked, stepping up.He nodded frantically, then backtracked. "Y-Yes... No, I'm not. Please don't kill me."Debra glanced at a guard. "No one else here?""Nope."She didn't waste time. "Take them both.""Yes, ma'am.""Don't kill me, please." Ryan trembled as they dragged him off.Back at the Lowe Mansion, the guards shoved both guys to the floor.Debra grabbed a fruit knife from the table and slashed Troy's face. His scream pierced the room. She frowned, and a guard stuffed a rag in his mouth. She tossed the knife aside and turned to Ryan. "You go first. Give me a quick intro.""W-What intro?" Ryan stammered, dumbfounded."Just do it!" a guard barked."I-I'm Ryan Atkinsonn," he blurted. "I graduated from Orkgate Community College, got a Level 1 computer cert, and...""Stop," Debra cut in, frowning. "Who asked for that?"He blinked, lost."Is Kurtis your dad?""Y-Yes...""Is he dead?""I-I don't

"Don't sell yourself short," Debra said. "You had to know something. Copying your face isn't a quick job. It must have taken at least a month to heal. They picked you and Kurtis on purpose. Every move I made, like cleaning out the grunts and messing with Fermin, was guided by them. They even anticipated my choice of Kurtis. If they planned this far, why not just kill you both? The memorial was set up, and Troy's in mourning clothes. But they didn't slit your throat? Weird, right? Hoping I'd spot the fake?"Her logic was tight, and Ryan's expression shifted."Don't tell me your lord gave you faith but no brains," she said, leaning back on the sofa. She pointed at Troy. "If I'm right, you're a dead-end pawn. You'd refuse to talk, maybe off yourself, so I'd trust Ryan. You don't even know the full play, do you? Guess I should ask him instead."She turned to Ryan. "So, what's the message to me? Lure me into a dark web deal for a scandal? Lock me up? Or cozy up to me, gain my trust, the

Debra cut him off. "I don't care why he got the surgery. How'd you know I'd hit your place tonight?"Ryan squirmed. "A beautiful lady told us.""Beautiful lady?" Debra echoed."Yeah, she said you'd show up tonight," he said. "Gave us a shot to serve the bishop. Troy cooked up this plan. If you bought his act, he'd finish the job. If not, I'd step in. He'd die to sell my story, get me close to you, and nab what the bishop wants.""Simple goal," Debra said. "But you killed your dad for it?""Not me." Ryan waved his hands. "My dad never cared about me. I lived with my mom and grandparents. After she died, I didn't give a damn if he lived or not. But he's still my dad. I got home today, and Troy had killed him. Said we'd sacrificed too much to quit now. I just went along.""Are you dumb?" Debra stared. He really was a dim bulb. 'Dumb blonde' fits this six-foot dude better than his fake act."I know people call me stupid," Ryan said. "But Troy's my only buddy. I back him up. Joining

Debra chambered a round and aimed at Ryan's forehead. The smooth, practiced motion spiked the tension.Ryan, already a scary cat, lost it completely."Talk, damn it," he shrieked.Ryan looked at Debra's serious expression and hesitated. "The one messing with you is me. Just kill me and leave him alone.""Do you think I'm a fool?" she sneered, "You never care about your own life. Don't worry. If you stay quiet, I'll deal with him first and then you.""Troy, I don't want to die," Ryan cried out.Troy squeezed his eyes shut. "She just told me to kill Kurtis. Said you'd show up tonight. Nothing else."She frowned, and he added, "She said if I refused, she'd do it herself and kill Ryan too. I had no choice, so I came up with this plan."She assessed the credibility of his words. 'Why would Lara want Kurtis dead? What'd she gain?'Suddenly, the doors burst open. Cops flooded in with guns drawn. "Freeze."In a flash, she figured out Lara's real play."Debra Houston, you're under ar

The police chief's words laid it out. Escaping was impossible."No worries," Debra said. "We don't even know who the real killer is, right?""True," he said. "We're still digging. But as a suspect, you'll have to sit tight for now."He waved his men over to grab her, then glanced at Troy and Ryan, who were still held down."Those two are your hostages," he said. "We need them for questioning. Let them go."Following Debra's orders, the guards released them.Troy grinned, thrilled that the bishop didn't ditch them. Ryan, on the other hand, was still suffering from the aftershock....In Seamar City, Jordan got the news from the guards. He shot up, yelling into the phone, "What did I tell you before you left for Orkgate? Her safety comes first. Why did you let the police take her?""Sir, we followed your orders," the guard replied. "But Mrs. Houston told us to stand down and head back.""Nonsense!" Jordan hung up, storming to Drake's room.He kicked the door open. Drake prote

"I'll handle it." Jordan turned to leave.Drake called after him, "Orkgate isn't your playground. Think the Potter name lets you run wild? Save it. You're not Andrew. You don't have juice."Andrew's weight was great enough, but Jordan was just a newbie propped up by the Potter family, not the other way around."No one's going," a voice interrupted. "I am."Juan stood at the door. Jordan's secretary scurried up. "Sir, Mr. Nichols said he's got a way to save Mrs. Houston, so I let him in.""You?" Jordan sneered. "Think you can do that?""Yes," Juan said, tossing a seal at them. "While I'm gone, help me run my company. I'll bring her back safe."He walked out, and Jordan reluctantly eyed the seal....In Orkgate prison, the warden shoved Debra inside. "Get in."The police chief strolled in, scolding him with feigned anger, "Don't be rude to the lady. If she gets hurt, can you handle the fallout?"The warden bowed and scraped. "My bad, Chief.""Cut the act," Debra said. "Someon

Debra had seen much of life, and the warden's big talk was pathetic. She crooked a finger at him, and he strutted in, fearless. Before he could get close, she grabbed his neck right at the sweet spot. One squeeze, and he'd be done.He froze. Guards outside moved to step in."I wouldn't," she warned. "My hand's got a mind of its own. If he dies, you're all screwed, right?""How dare you?" the warden hissed. "In here, you're my prisoner. Touch me, and you're screwed."Unfazed, she snapped his neck with a crisp crack. He dropped, eyes wide in shock. The guards outside freaked."She's nuts!" one yelled, aiming at her."Go ahead and shoot," she said, sitting on the bunk. "See if you live to see another day."She kicked the warden's body. "You see, I can off him, and your chief won't touch me. Mess with me, and you're next."The guards hesitated, spooked by her vibe. She wasn't just anyone. The chief's politeness proved it.But then again, a Seamar City hotshot meant squat in Ork

"Marion is here! It's really him!" a guard shouted. He strode in alone, boots clacking on the floor. The guards backed off, spooked. No one had warned them about this. His eyes were ice-cold. The guards swapped looks, swallowing hard.In Orkgate, Drake topped their fear list. Marion was a close second. An old deal had kept him out of the place until now. Seeing him up close, they froze."Mr. Houston..." one stammered."Scram," Marion said, barely sparing them a glance. They bolted, but he barked, "Stop."They halted, and he added, "Leave the keys."They dropped the keys and ran. Marion unlocked the cell, rushing to check on her."You okay?" he asked anxiously. Before she could answer, Lexie's voice cut in. "Mrs. Houston, are you all right? I've handled everyone outside. You're free to go."Marion murmured, "The Trennery family have connections here. You're safe now. I'll get you out."He grabbed her hand, but Debra didn't budge. "Miss Trennery and you get along so well.""

Debra stared at the pendant. What had happened yesterday came flooding back.Kale was gone, and the fact hit her hard."It's my fault," she said in agony. "If he hadn't gone with me, he would have been alive.""Everyone makes their calls," Marion soothed her. "If there's blame, it's on the Illuminati. I was terrified, almost losing you.""I felt like you were nearby, so I wasn't afraid," she said, leaning into him. "They'll pay for hurting Drake and killing Kale. I'll make sure of it.""No matter what happens, we're in this together," he said.Exhaustion took over. She closed her eyes and drifted off. When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her injury kept her from moving much.Everyone gathered outside her bedroom. William came in to check on her."You're fine. Just change the dressings on time," he said, packing up his kit. William left quickly.Marion got up to lock the door and returned to the bedside.Sitting back into the chair, he switched on a dim lamp, making sure Debra would see him first thing if she woke up."Brother..." Debra mumbled.Marion leaned in. "I'm here."Her murmurs stopped, but her hands shot up, grasping at the air. "It's so dark. Save me."He grabbed her flailing hands right away. "Don't be scared. I'm right here."But she didn't calm down. She clutched his hand, her nails scratching at his skin. "Brother, save me," she murmured, feeling like she was trapped in a pitch-black hold.Cold seawater seemed to swallow her whole. The biting chill seeped into every crack of her body. The stench of the ocean made her gag.The water was up to her chin. She stood on tiptoes, desperate for a breath in that tiny space."Save me." Her eyes flew open.Familiar surroundings came into view. Her pupils darted until they landed on Marion. Her racing heart finally slowed."Marion?" Her v

Not long after, Marion came out with Debra.William nudged Erica and Randy. "Told you it would be soon.""How's she out here fresh after surgery?" Erica gawked.Debra was supposed to recover in the hospital, but seeing her unconscious form on the stretcher, Erica figured he had his reasons."Let's go back," Jordan chimed in. "The Potter Mansion's got a top-notch medical team. If we need gear, I'll grab it.""Yeah, hospitals suck anyway," Randy said. "Let's head back. It's freezing out here."They'd planned to grab food and head in, but Erica had made them wait so Marion could have more time with Debra. Now they were all sniffling."I'm... Achoo." William sneezed again, then bolted for the car. "I'm out of there. It's freaking cold."He had treated so many patients, but this was the first time he had fallen ill.Debra, still out cold, was loaded into the back. Marion stayed close, tending to her.By the time they reached the Potter Mansion, it was the middle of the night.Wil

William rubbed his eyes in disbelief. They had taken the emergency lane to the hospital, but Marion and the others arrived right behind their heels after going through a battle."We floored it. That's not the point," Erica replied.Marion and Jordan were already striding into the hospital.Randy grabbed Erica's arm. "Come on. Let's go.""Huh? William is still here." She was puzzled.Inside, the operating room's red light glowed.Marion arrived first. The hospital director greeted him, saying, "Mrs. Houston is in surgery now. Our top doctors have assessed her. The wound's been handled perfectly, and she is out of danger."Marion's face softened a bit. Erica heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. She's fine now."They'd been terrified seeing Debra collapse in a pool of blood."You're wiped out. Why don't you rest a bit?" Erica said, turning to Marion."I'll wait here," he replied, his eyes glued to the red light.Until it turned green, he couldn't rest his mind at ease."Well

Michael raised an eyebrow. "My plan never included you. Does our master know you snuck here from Orkgate? And you've got the nerve to question me?"Lara glared at him, her body aching from the burns. Her face twisted with anger."Take Miss Sharp back for treatment. It will take two hours to get back, so she'll have to tough it out," Michael ordered, unfazed. Before leaving with his crew, he lamented sanctimoniously, "Such a shame, ruining a pretty face like that."Lara clenched her fists, incandescent with rage....In the ambulance, Debra coughed up another mouthful of blood. It splattered right onto William's white coat."Aw." William almost griped about the mess, holding back only at the sight of her bad condition. He had to save her, no matter what. It was a promise he'd made to Andrew. He didn't even want to think about what would happen to him if Debra didn't make it today."Maybe another shot of painkiller? We've gotta get that bullet out fast," a medic suggested."Yo

"Miss, the fire's cut off the road," a guard reported.Lara looked around, understanding that Marion had scoped their escape route, lured them with gunfire, and set the trap. The strategy was simple but effective. The terrifying part was that he had planned it in no time and carried it out efficiently."Miss, what now?" the guard asked anxiously, looking at the roaring flames.Instead of throwing in more fuel, Marion led his crew to an open spot near water, so they could douse the fire later. The dense trees left no way out.Lara gritted her teeth, grabbed a guy, and shoved him forward, using him as a shield against the fire."Dying for me should make you proud," she said, ignoring his thrashing. He burned, reeking of charred flesh. She covered her nose, broke through, and tossed him aside. The rest couldn't escape, awaiting death.Burns scarred her body, but she didn't stop, ignoring the pain and the screams from behind her.Following the plan, Jordan's team prepared to kill

It all happened in a flash. Randy couldn't even tell how the shooting started."What're you doing? Hide!" Erica yelled. He jolted, quickly ducking behind a tree. This was life or death. Bullets didn't care who they hit. Taking cover was important. He peeked out and saw Erica charging ahead. It reminded him of their childhood. She had been Caleb's favorite, but he had thought her skills were just girly fluff. Now? The gap was glaring. She was a beast, and he was a chicken.Up ahead, Lara couldn't gauge how many were coming.A guy ran up, reporting their hidden crew got wiped by Marion. Unsure of the enemy's numbers, they held back.Lara's eyes narrowed. She believed that Marion's desperation was driven by Debra's death."He's courting death," she sneered. "I thought he was smart. Turns out he's so dumb."Turning to the messenger, she ordered, "Tell Michael's people to close in. We're boxing them up and wiping them out.""Miss, we can't.""What?""Mr. Austin's crew pulled o

They might not crush the Illuminati, but they'd make them bleed."Take your guys and come with me," Marion said."They've lost it," Randy muttered.Erica sighed, "I've been itching to teach those clowns a lesson too. Like sewer rats, they only know how to hide behind masks and cloaks.""Don't be impulsive" Randy warned."I'm going," she insisted, yanking out her gun. "Might as well go nuts. Like is too short."Randy tensed up. "You serious?""Stay back and watch Debra if you're scared," she said. "Don't drag me down."She charged into the trees. Randy stared, feeling like the weak link."Fine. I'll show you tough," he growled, turning to a guard. "Give me your gun.""Uh, Mr. Osborne, you sure?" The guard hesitated."What, you think I can't handle it?" Randy smacked the guard's head. "I was popping off shots before you were born."

Debra suddenly hacked hard, spitting blood.Erica and Randy lit up. Jordan heaved a sigh of relief as she opened her eyes."Medical kit!" Marion snapped out of it first.William hustled over, gaping at the scene."Debra, hang in there," Erica babbled, rattled."She can't talk yet," William said, rushing to stop her bleeding.Blood poured from her chest, soaking her."You're safe now," Marion soothed her."I'm okay," she rasped. The pendant given by Kale had caught the bullet and saved her life.Tears slid down her face. She'd sworn her friends wouldn't get hurt, but Kale was gone."Don't just stand there. Help me out," William urged. "She has got an hour at most if you don't move."The pendant had dulled the shot, but it was just a stone. Her chest still took a hit even though the wound wasn't deep.Erica snapped back, and Jordan signaled for a stretcher."I've got her," Marion said, lifting her onto it.The group watched with heavy hearts. As she was carried off, Mario
