Chapter 4

Author: Just a Cat
"Wasn't he Ms. Reed's favorite?"

"What kind of favorite stays a mere assistant for nine years? Only an idiot would believe that."

I stepped into the elevator, my heart sinking to rock bottom. What was obvious to everyone else had escaped me alone.

I had closed countless deals and still remained an assistant for nine years. Samuel had been here for only three months, barely familiar with his computer, yet he had already been promoted to manager.

Wasn't it painfully clear where her affection lay?

Yet it was only after I had hurt myself beyond repair that I finally came to my senses.

The moment the elevator doors opened, loud chatter filled the air as everyone celebrated Samuel's discharge.

Barely in his early 20s, Samuel stood among the crowd, shaking hands with everyone. Thanks to the CEO's favor, even his superiors had to fawn over him.

"Samuel, when are you and Ms. Reed getting married? Don't forget to invite us to the wedding."

"Once the wedding's done and a child comes next year, you'll really be winning at life."

Samuel blushed and stared straight at Angela. Angela smiled without answering, as if silently agreeing.

I found it ridiculous.

In the past, someone had sensed the subtle tension between Angela and me and spread a few rumors in the company. Back then, Angela had been furious. After firing the employee, she issued a strict order forbidding anyone from spreading gossip.

Ever since Samuel arrived, this strict rule had been abolished. It turned out she didn't hate gossip—she simply disliked me.

The moment I appeared, the room fell silent. The looks directed at me were filled with contempt and amusement, as if they were eager to see how an assistant who had offended the CEO would end up.

When Angela saw me, her cold gaze swept over me like a weapon.

"Oh, isn't this Mr. Pearson who wants to resign? It's already 11:00 am. You're two hours late. That counts as half a day of absence."

I knew she was angry, but after ten years of placating her, I no longer had the energy. I had already made myself clear, yet she refused to let it go. Did she really think the world revolved around her?

When I remained silent, Angela's expression darkened further. "Didn't you say you weren't capable? If you can't handle the assistant's work, then you'll be transferred to the cleaning department."

Claiming incompetence had only been an excuse to resign. Over the years, I had secured countless deals for the company. As the CEO, how could Angela not know?

Yet she still said such things just to humiliate me. It was truly childish.

Samuel's expression changed. He grabbed Angela's arm and spoke with feigned concern. "Angel, isn't this a bit much? Mr. Pearson is very capable at his job."

The other employees exchanged glances. After all, everyone knew how much I had contributed to the company.

I had long grown tired of these meaningless office battles. I waved my hand. "There's no need for this. Just sign it."

Angela froze, her mouth opening as if she were about to speak.

Standing beside her, Samuel's eyes instantly reddened, tears threatening to spill. "I'm not fit for this role. I should probably let Mr. Pearson take my position as manager."

"You earned your promotion through your own ability. I dare anyone to gossip about you!" Angela said.

After comforting Samuel, Angela assumed I was still making a fuss and shouted impatiently, "Go work in cleaning for now. When the company goes public later, I'll promote you to general manager. Are you satisfied now?"

It was always "later". Every promise she made was hollow, doomed never to be fulfilled. Did she really think I was an idiot?

I glanced at the time on my watch and cut in, "Sorry, you two. I'm about to board. If there's anything else, we can talk after I arrive in Avernia."

Angela pulled me into the storage room. The space was filled with gift boxes. She shoved the worn-out watch into my hand, then went on opening the gift boxes by herself. She said these were gifts meant to make up for me.I threw the watch, and the glass shattered instantly. The hands wobbled a few times before coming to a complete stop."It took me a long time to get this watch repaired," she said.Angela panicked as she picked up the watch and reached toward the shards scattered across the floor.I shook my head. "Some things can't be fixed once they're broken. It's like this watch. No matter how you piece it together, it'll never be the same."Angela refused to give up. She carefully gathered all the shattered pieces and looked at me with determination. "I'll fix it."I was at a loss for words. If it weren't for the sake of a smooth divorce, I wouldn't even bother dealing with her.Seeing her about to drag me back into old memories and try to mend a relationship that had long

"Stop dragging this out. I spent nine years of my youth for you. I'm truly exhausted," I said.I pressed the pen into her hand. Angela signed with trembling fingers, her tears falling heavily onto the paperwork.Due to policy changes, even though we had signed the papers, the divorce still required a one-month cooling-off period. But that was fine. We could just come back when the time came. Finally freed, I found myself smiling for the first time in a long while.Just as I was about to push the door open, Angela suddenly hugged me from behind. "Ronald, don't push me away. Let me hold you a little longer."I said nothing and let her tears soak into my back.A cab pulled up at the entrance. Dad stepped out, waving at me. Angela followed after me. "Dad—"After nine years of marriage, this was the first time she had ever addressed him that way.Dad waved his hand dismissively. "Why are you calling me 'Dad?' You and Ron are divorced now. Just keep calling me Mr. Pearson."He urg

As soon as Samuel panicked, his asthma flared up again.Angela instinctively moved to support him, but when she caught sight of me out of the corner of her eye, she stopped."He has asthma medication in his bag. Help me get it for him," she said coldly.I looked at her calmly. "We're getting divorced anyway. There's really no need for you to avoid suspicion now."It was only at that moment that I realized Angela had actually known all along where the problems in our marriage lay. She was simply content with the situation and couldn't be bothered to change.Angela, who had always been so proud, lowered her head and pleaded, "Ronald, can you not leave?"For a moment, I seemed to see the girl from ten years ago, crying in my arms because her family favored sons over daughters. Back then, I used to comfort her gently and swear that I would be her strongest support. But over those nine years of marriage, we had already drifted apart."Angela, let's part on good terms," I said.Angel

Angela didn't love me, yet she refused to let me go. That meant she was deliberately making things difficult for me."Angela, if you don't want to sign, that's fine. Then we'll go through the legal process in two years," I said before turning around and walking away.Angela grabbed my hand, tears glistening in her eyes. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I forcefully shook her hand off, nearly causing her to fall. Samuel rushed forward to steady her, his face flushed as he argued with me."Angel has never done anything to wrong you. She's such a good person. How can you treat her like this?"He stood protectively in front of Angela and drove away the onlookers, like a hero saving a damsel."Yes, she's such a wonderful person. Here—she's all yours," I said.I really didn't want to keep dealing with them any longer.Just as I was about to leave, Angela suddenly shouted, "Fine! I'll sign it. We'll go to the courthouse to get divorced."I handled my resignation first and

It was laughable in hindsight. Over the years, I never dared to go out for meals with my friends because I was afraid I couldn't afford the bill.My friends assumed that I had married a wealthy wife yet was still being stingy with them, so one by one, they cut ties with me. After working so hard for so long, I ended up completely alone.Angela fell silent for a moment, then took my payroll card out of her bag and handed it to me. "I've never used your salary. If this is about money, then from now on, you don't have to give me your entire paycheck."Under her expectant gaze, I pushed the card back to her. "There's no need to bring up the past."If I had been after money, I would never have worked alongside her back then, let alone given up my shares or been willing to work myself to the bone. When Angela realized that I truly intended to leave, a trace of panic flashed in her eyes. Her tone softened."Is your dad too tired working as a driver? How about this? I'll transfer him to

"What are you going abroad for?" Angela asked.A flicker of surprise crossed her face. She thought for a moment before speaking cautiously."Are you going on a trip? Once I get through this busy period, I'll go with you. Stop acting impulsively. The company is in a growth phase right now, and I can't step away."I had once wanted to travel with her and see the world together. Yet she had always dismissed the idea, asking what was so special about the scenery and saying our time would be better spent closing more deals. After Samuel appeared, she took him flying around every few days. Even now, Samuel's Instagram account was still filled with photos from their trips—the two of them leaning close together, smiling sweetly. No wonder everyone in the company suspected they were a couple. Only Angela stubbornly insisted that they were just colleagues.I shook my head. "No need."I handed her my resignation letter and the divorce agreement. Since I was leaving for a new life, I wanted
