Chapter 5

Author: Ding
On the way back to the apartment, Leonardo tried to hold my hand.

“Violet, I misunderstood you earlier. I shouldn’t have raised my voice at you.

“But I also didn’t want you to misunderstand me. I was busy in the kitchen just to leave a good impression on my friends.

“Don’t be mad, okay? Didn’t I leave the party early and agree to spend time with you alone?

“Let’s go back, send the person viewing the apartment away, and tell the agent we’re not subleasing anymore. Please?”

I shook his hand off and looked at him seriously.

“Leonardo, do I look like I’m f*cking with you?

“Since you insist on coming back with me, that works. You can take all your things with you.”

Seeing that I wouldn’t give in, he grew annoyed.

“Violet, aren’t you going too far this time?

“We’re in a relationship. You didn’t even discuss it with me and just decided to move out on your own?”

I found it funny.

“Leonardo, when you decided to go to Sicilia, not only did you not ask for my opinion, but you didn’t even plan to tell me. So why are you suddenly making an issue of it now?”

“How is that the same?”

He raised his voice, his chest rising and falling.

“That wasn’t decided yet back then. Besides, I was doing it for your own good. I didn’t want you to overthink.”

A surge of anger rushed up my throat.

“Stop making excuses for yourself. You were the one who took the initiative to develop this business in Sicilia. Don’t tell me you had no idea whether you’d be sent there.

“Since you never planned to include me in your future, I don’t need you in mine either.”

Leonardo froze for a moment, his tone weakening.

“Violet, what do you mean by that?”

Soon, we arrived at the apartment.

He saw the matching scarves we bought last Christmas, the photo from Starlight Island that we had developed and framed…

More than a dozen items, big and small, carrying nearly a year of our memories, including that Hermès bag.

All of them were placed on the coffee table.

He stared in shock. “You’re not taking any of these?”

“No.”

“Where are you moving to?”

“Work transfer to Sampa, Pindorama.”

After hearing that, Leonardo let out a short laugh.

“Violet, are you trying to piss me off on purpose? Didn’t we already reach an understanding about me going abroad?

“What, do you think doing this will make me stay?”

After that day, I packed all of Leonardo’s belongings into cardboard boxes and threw them outside the door.

During the three days we had no contact, Leonardo didn’t know that on the same day he was leaving for Sicilia, I was also heading to Pindorama.

The flight from Bayview to Sampa would take nearly ten hours across the ocean.

I felt uneasy about the unknown future.

But more than that, I felt relieved.

Once I arrived, it would be time to formally break up with Leonardo.

Unexpectedly, a severe storm in the Mediterranean shifted course and hit Sicilia.

Leonardo’s flight was delayed.

When he called me, I had just passed airport security.

“Violet, I think this is a chance for me to make things right.

“Let’s meet. I don’t want to carry our unresolved issues abroad.”

The background noise in the call grew louder.

I looked around and noticed a young couple having dinner in a nearby restaurant.

The restaurant was running a promotion.

There was a poster on the wall advertising a couple’s set meal.

Through a pane of glass, Leonardo saw me as well.

Before he could speak, I said calmly, “There’s nothing left to talk about between us. I won’t interrupt you two on your couple’s meal. Leonardo, let’s break up.”

Then I hung up.

Leonardo ran out after me.

“Violet, it’s not what you think. Katrina wanted the promotional doll, so I just accompanied her for the meal.”

Then he finally noticed the suitcase beside me.

His face turned pale instantly.

“Where are you going?”

He realized then that we were in the international departures hall.

“You’re really going to Pindorama? Is your family business really that important to you?”

I nodded. “Leonardo, there’s something you said that was right.

“Everyone should be responsible for their own choices.”

When the boarding announcement sounded, he grabbed my suitcase and refused to let go.

His eyes were slightly red as he spoke through clenched teeth.

“Violet, if you really break up with me, then I’ll get together with Katrina!

“You might not know this, but half a year ago, the day you came to get back together with me, Katrina confessed to me.

“It’s not like I can’t live without you!”

I smiled. “Alright, then go be with her.”

He stared at me, his gaze turning colder.

“You said it. I hope you don’t regret it.”

“I won’t.”

After saying that, I turned around and didn’t look back.

Katrina’s parents came to Bayview to discuss the wedding details that day. I drank a lot.Not because I was happy, but because Violet had posted something that day.In the photo, she was wearing a white dress. Standing on a hillside full of wildflowers, she looked beautiful, a relaxed smile on her face.I stared at that photo for a long time. She really didn’t love me anymore, and that thought felt like a bucket of ice water poured over my head.I suddenly remembered what she had said to me at the end.“You’re already dirty.”Not physically, but emotionally.Through my repeated indifference, my lies, and my blurred boundaries with Katrina, I had ruined my place in her heart. So dirty that the thought of me made her feel sick, and that she didn’t even want to look back. The wedding was set for October.Katrina chose a manor near Panormus Cathedral in Sicilia. She said it was “where we fell in love”.I didn’t correct her. That was never where our love began, but where I l

Leonardo’s POVIn the end, I still got engaged to Katrina. At the engagement party, Katrina smiled like a blooming rose.I stood beside her, holding a glass of champagne, forcing a perfect smile at the camera. The moment the flash went off, I suddenly thought of a summer like this many years ago.The sea breeze on Hill Valley carried a salty scent. Violet stood barefoot on the beach, turning back to shout at me, “Leonardo, come look! This crab is so stupid!”Back then, I was a teenager. The world felt small, the future felt long, and she would always be there.Until she wasn’t.After the engagement, Katrina moved into my apartment in Mayruelle. She liked filling up the walk-in closet, hosting parties in the living room, and having me accompany her to all kinds of family gatherings. She was a great girlfriend—beautiful, talkative, and knew how to please elders.Every time my mother saw her, she would smile from ear to ear and say, “This is the kind of daughter-in-law the Vita

I had been in a relationship while I was in Pindorama. It lasted three months with a French guy three years younger than me.Although we eventually broke up after the passion faded, it was still a good memory worth keeping.A faint layer of moisture appeared in Leonardo’s eyes.He gritted his teeth as if trying to convince himself.“It’s okay. Let’s just pretend this argument lasted longer than usual.“It’s normal to lose focus a little in a relationship. It’s not a big deal, really.“We got back together once. We can do it a second time.”I let out a cold laugh.“Leonardo, stop having pointless fantasies.“When I got back together with you back then, I was already preparing to leave you.“To be honest, it was only because you still looked decent that I used you to relieve some stress.”I deliberately made my words harsh. However, Leonardo grabbed my hand, like a drowning man clutching at a lifeline.“Violet, if you say that, it means I still have some use to you, right?

I’m Jack. Instead, Jack happily accepted the water. In the end, Jack and I didn’t exchange contact information, but the two of them did.Not only that, the next morning, he showed up in my kitchen again. The familiar smell of pasta drifted out.Leonardo was wearing an apron, plating the pasta as he spoke, “I heard Uncle and Aunt went out, so I came to cook for you.”The pasta he made looked and tasted good. His intention to get back together was obvious.

During Christmas, my parents asked me to come home. That was when I found out that Leonardo had actually brought Katrina back as well.As usual, both families had dinner together. At the dinner table, Mrs. Vitale looked more and more satisfied with Katrina as her future daughter-in-law.“Leonardo, when are you and Katrina planning to get married?”Leonardo glanced at me instinctively. “Mom, we’re still young. There’s no rush for that.”Katrina paused. Her hand holding the fork stiffened slightly, then forced a proper smile. “Leonardo, we can get engaged first.”Seeing this, my parents also started urging me to find a boyfriend.“Sweetheart, how about that neighbor who helped you move in Pindorama? Are you still in touch? Has he come back to the Allied States, too?“I think that baseball player from your college was pretty good, too. Didn’t he ask you out before? Does he like you?“I remember my friend Luca’s son just graduated this year. I’ve seen his photo. Very handsome…”

In the second week after I arrived in Sampa, Leonardo’s mother, Mrs. Vitale, called me specially.“Violet, I really have to thank you.“Leonardo said that if it weren’t for you, he and Katrina wouldn’t have gotten together.”She also sent me a few photos. In the pictures, Leonardo and Katrina were in Sicilia, gathered with a group of new friends, smiling at the camera and posing.I had thought that seeing my worst nightmare come true would upset me deeply. However, my heart was unusually calm.I even had the leisure to zoom in on the photos and see what kind of wine they were drinking. That’s when it hit me that my love for Leonardo had truly run out.I thought Leonardo and I would never cross paths again. But three months later, I ran into him and Katrina in Solaria. When he saw me from afar, Leonardo lost his composure a little.Katrina walked up to me, her expression dark.“Violet, you really have persistence.
