Chapter 1

I bit down on my lower lip, unable to believe what I was seeing.

The soreness and weakness in my body kept reminding me just how over the top Dean Abernathy had been last night. However, as it turned out, it had all been for someone else.

Messages kept going in the group chat.

[That’s our guy, smooth as ever! With the prettiest girl in class in his arms and the prettiest girl in school by his side… He’s living the dream. I’m so jealous.]

[Rue’s probably crying, right? She’s been pursuing you all these years, and in the end, she’s just a pastime to you.]

[I hope her tears don’t drown you, dude!]

[If she cries, she cries. Worst case, I’ll spend a little time coaxing her. I guarantee it won’t even take two days before she comes running back to me. It’s been years. You think I don’t know her by now? Listen up, Joanna will be my future wife. Don’t get it wrong… Sh*t! I think I forgot to log out of WhatsApp on computer!]

The bedroom door suddenly swung open. Dean strode in and roughly snatched the laptop away. He was in such a hurry that the screen slammed straight into my wrist. I lowered my head, silently clutching the throbbing pain.

He fumbled with the controls, and when he saw that WhatsApp was still on the login screen, waiting to be scanned, he visibly relaxed. Then, he tossed the laptop back onto the bed. Only then did he notice my red eyes.

“Why are you crying?” he asked.

“I lost thirteen matches in a row,” I said numbly, forcing out an excuse. “I was about to win, too…”

The tears started falling anyway, salty and bitter. The flutter in my heart was nothing but my imagination.

The mattress dipped slightly beside me as Dean wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

He smiled and lightly flicked my nose. “It’s no big deal. Just you wait. Your boy’s gonna carry you next round!”

Excited, he pulled out his phone, ready to queue up a game with me, when he suddenly paused. Turning slightly, he used his lean back to block my view. Still, I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye. A message had come in from an avatar of a proud-looking tabby cat.

[Are you really going to Harbor City for university?]

Dean quickly put his phone away.

“Rue, my family needs me back. I’ll crush them for you next time.”

Like always, he reached out, intending to ruffle my hair. However, I tilted my head slightly, avoiding his touch. His long fingers hung awkwardly in midair.

“Be good. Don’t cry. I’ll help you out next time,” he said hastily before heading for the door.

I grabbed his arm, asking, “Do you really have to go?”

He paused for a moment. His gaze brushed over the faint marks still lingering on my neck. Then, he leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on the top of my head.

However, his voice remained firm as he said, “Be good. Something really did come up at home.”

His fingers slipped out of my grasp without hesitation. Head lowered, eyes on his phone, he walked away quickly.

  • Goodbye, My Sweetheart   Chapter 11

When I arrived at the café, he had been waiting for a while.“Latte or Americano?” he asked.“Neither,” I said, meeting his eyes. “Dean, I don’t like coffee.”He let out an awkward laugh. “Sorry, I forgot.”Yeah. He forgot.Back in sophomore year of high school, during our final exams, my grades finally surpassed Joanna’s for the first time. Her group of friends accused me of cheating. During the argument, they tore up my exam paper before pouring an entire cup of coffee over the notes I had just neatly organized.I demanded an apology from Joanna, but Dean stepped in to smooth things over. “Forget it. We’re all friends. Don’t make a big deal out of it.”I felt so upset that I hid in the woods when everyone had gone home and cried quietly. It took Dean a long time to look for me. When he finally found me, he handed me his own neatly organized notes and pressed them into my hands.“I fixed everything for you. Stop crying.”“I didn’t cheat,” I said through my tears, stubbornly i

I froze for a moment. His lips curved into a bright smile as he waved at me. “Hello?”His suitcase scraped across the concrete floor, making a grating sound. It sounded like an old exhaust bellows in a rundown house that refused to retire, still stubbornly clinging to its last breath. He followed behind me, casually asking as he walked, “The weather in Capitol City is pretty dry. I didn’t realize it gets this hot in the north in summer. What’s the male-to-female ratio here? It feels like there might be some all-boys lectures… The traffic outside the campus gate is crazy. Capitol City’s traffic is really bad! How’s the cafeteria food? Oh, right. Which club are you in? Can you introduce me to it?”I took a deep breath and turned around. “Dean, is this kind of nonsense fun to you?”He touched the bridge of his nose. He didn’t dare meet my eyes.A long silence passed. When he finally looked up again, his eyes were red.He said, “It’s no fun at all, but you refused to talk to me, and

Once we settled in, campus life quickly became hectic. I was busy adjusting to university classes, choosing elective modules I wanted, and getting to know my roommates. One day, on my way back from the cafeteria with food, I noticed someone standing below my dorm. It was Dean.Wanting to avoid him, I lowered my head and quickly turned in the opposite direction, but he had already seen me. He rushed over in a few steps and grabbed my wrist.“Rue, you really are here! Why did you change your number? Why did you unfriend me on Instagram?”His usual laidback voice was there, but this time, it was slightly trembling.“Dean,” I said, “I thought we had made things clear.”“Made things clear? What, breaking up? I don’t agree to that!”His grip tightened suddenly as he raised his voice, drawing the attention of passing students. The dorm supervisor leaned out from the window and called loudly, “Hey, do you need help?”I politely declined her kindness. Then, I slowly pried his fingers o

Dean thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, but I really did follow the crowd to the platform on the other side, with the destination displayed for Capitol City. Only then did he realize that when I said we weren’t heading the same way, I meant it. I hadn’t been sulking or throwing a tantrum. Almost instinctively, he pulled out his phone and tried to call me.“The number you have dialed is not in service. Please try again.” The cold, mechanical female voice echoed in his ear.He quickly opened his WhatsApp. He scrolled down three to four times, and only then did he find that familiar profile photo. As it turned out, he hadn’t contacted me in a long time.A strange sense of panic rose in his chest. He tried calling me, but the one-tick mark stating that his messages couldn’t go through felt like a slap in the face. The uneasiness in his heart suddenly turned real. Had I been speaking honestly when I said we had broken up? Had I really given up on him? On the train heading t

Dean didn’t contact me again. Maybe, just like he said, he wanted me to calm down. Grandma hadn’t broken any bones, and since it was only a mild sprain, I took her home.Joanna posted a photo of just the two of them on Instagram, hiking together to watch the sunrise. Even though it was only a shot from behind, I recognized Dean at a glance. Her caption read, “Someone’s shoulder is seriously reliable! I couldn’t make it up the last stretch, so he carried me up.”This time, she didn’t restrict the post to close friends only, because plenty of friends from school liked it. Dean did, too. Some of them started teasing in the comments.[If you’ve met the right one, just say yes already!][Which lucky guy gets to carry the prettiest girl in school?][You’d better keep your eyes open. You don’t want to get tricked by some jerk.]Joanna replied: [Relax. There are no jerks here.]It all felt painfully dull, so I deleted both of them and then changed my phone number. With my admission le

“Rue?”Joanna was the first to react. She quickly slid off Dean’s lap and hurried over to me, grabbing my hand as she explained, “Don’t get the wrong idea! Nothing is going on between Dean and me. At the gathering tonight, I think I drank too much and felt unwell, so I told him to take me to the hospital–”“And did they find out what was wrong?” I asked coolly.“An allergy.”She lifted her arm in front of me, showing the red marks that hadn’t faded yet and the bracelet swaying on her wrist.I looked up, and when I met her provocative gaze, Joanna mouthed, “He gave it to me.”I shook her hand off.Not far away, Dean frowned. “Rue! Stop overthinking. Joanna wasn’t feeling well. I just brought a friend to the hospital. Is there something wrong with helping each other out?”“Nothing wrong. Excuse me.”I brushed past him.Holding the registration slip in my hand, I walked into the emergency room. “Doctor, I’m the patient’s family.”Dean followed right after me. When he saw my gr
