Chapter 2

Autor: Macy
When I woke up the next morning, Sarah sat by the bed and apologized condescendingly.

“I remembered what happened yesterday. I will make up for it today. I’ll have my line cooks stay late and prepare a feast for your mom tonight.”

I sat up and looked at her. As she said that, she looked so relaxed, as if she were dealing with a minor inconvenience.

“There’s no need,” I said.

She froze for a moment, clearly not expecting me to refuse. “What?”

“Yesterday’s birthday dinner already happened at another restaurant.”

Sarah’s expression turned cold. “What do you mean by that? I said I’d make it up to you, and you’re still holding a grudge against me?”

“I’m not holding a grudge.” I pulled back the covers, stood up, and looked down at her. “I just don’t need you to do it anymore.”

She reacted as if she had just heard the biggest joke in the world. “You don’t need me to do it anymore? Do you know how many people would beg me to cook a meal for them? I already agreed to cook for you, and you’re giving me an attitude?”

The morning light fell across her, making her look strikingly beautiful. At thirty-seven, Sarah had even more allure than when she was younger. Her skin was fair, and her hair was loosely tied behind her head, revealing a slender neck.

With an apron on, she was the youngest female executive chef in the city; with it off, she was still a woman no men could take their eyes off. Yet as I looked at her now, my chest felt heavy.

To her, cooking a spread for Mom was an immense act of charity, and I was supposed to accept it with gratitude, flip the page on yesterday’s mess, and continue being her hardworking, submissive husband.

“Since you’re so busy, I won’t bother you.”

Sarah’s face darkened, and just as she was about to speak, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID, and her expression visibly softened.

“Hello, Mark? Yeah, go ahead.” She turned around, her tone incredibly gentle and sweet.

I heard the muffled sound of a man speaking on the other end. I couldn’t make out the exact words, but his tone was familiar.

Sarah listened for a moment, her lips curving into a smile.

“Why did you go to all that trouble… Fine, fine, I’ll thank you on his behalf.”

After hanging up, she turned back around with a look on her face that practically read, “Why don’t you learn a thing or two from him?”

“Mark heard about what happened yesterday and felt really bad about it, so he has personally planned a dinner for your mom. He said we can just head straight over. Free of charge.”

I almost thought I had misheard.

Yesterday, as I stood outside the restaurant, I had seen Mark glance over in my direction with an unfathomable smile on his face. He knew I was there.

“I won’t go.” I articulated every word clearly. “Mom’s birthday was yesterday.”

“Are you ever going to let this go?” Sarah snapped. “He went out of his way to do this for you, so stop being ungrateful! As for yesterday, it was your fault for not confirming the reservation with me beforehand. I was so busy. Who would remember a random comment you mentioned in passing?”

My mouth opened, but I suddenly realized I had no idea what to say. It wasn’t that I hadn’t checked with her beforehand; it was simply that with Sarah, my affairs always came last. She would forget what I said as soon as she heard it, as though I had never said it.

“Fine.” I sighed. “If you think I’m being unreasonable, then I am.”

Sarah scoffed and said with contempt. “You finally said something sensible. Get yourself ready and come with me this afternoon. Let’s not make Mark go through all that trouble for nothing. You should learn from him about what it means to be understanding!”

She turned to put on her shoes and muttered under her breath, “Living with you is so exhausting.”

The door slammed shut with a loud bang. I stood alone in the bedroom, staring blankly into space.

It really was exhausting, and I didn’t want to keep living like this anymore either.

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 9

The first thing Sarah did after returning to the city was to submit her resignation at the restaurant. The general manager asked her repeatedly why she was leaving, but Sarah couldn’t offer an explanation. She simply placed her neatly folded employee apron on the table, then turned and walked out of the revolving door she had used for ten years. The revolving door spun round and round, cutting her silhouette into pieces. The second thing she did was look for Mark. He lived in a fully furnished apartment on the east side of town, which Sarah found for him three years ago. She had even covered the rent herself. She used to think it was only natural that she did so. Mark was a single father raising a child, and it wasn’t easy for him. Who else would help him if not her?Yet standing in front of that familiar door, she asked herself a question for the very first time. I had taken care of our family and home together all by myself for ten years. Why did she never realize how hard it was

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 8

Sarah did not leave. Instead, she moved into the motel across from my apartment and started appearing next to the flowerbed downstairs every evening like clockwork.Sometimes she held a bag of snacks, and sometimes her hands were empty. However, she would just stand in the distance and do nothing. She never passed the bag of snacks over. She probably knew I wouldn’t take it even if she offered, so she simply held onto it. Her fingers gripped the handles so tightly that her knuckles turned white.Whenever I walked past her arm-in-arm with Mom, I never slowed my pace or looked away. If she stood on the left side of the flowerbed, I walked on the right. If she waited at the main gate, I took the side exit instead. At times, she stood under the streetlight, her shadow stretched long on the pavement. When I walked past her, it was no different from passing a stranger. This went on for ten days straight. Her eyes followed me softly and somewhat tentatively, as if she were terrified of s

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 7

Sarah tracked down my address a week later. That entire week, she barely slept a wink. She called every person in her contacts list remotely connected to me, but they either said they didn’t know or simply hung up on her.Eventually, she managed to reach my cousin. After nagging and pleading with him on the phone for three straight days, he finally relented, albeit impatiently.“He’s left. Why are you still looking for him? I will give you the address, but I hope you won’t push your luck!”She bought a plane ticket and flew over that very same day. When she stood at the entrance of my rented apartment building, she had lost a tremendous amount of weight. Dark circles hollowed her eyes, her lips were chapped and peeling, and her hair was loosely tied, with messy strands clinging to the sides of her face.In her hand, she clutched a bag she had brought from home. Inside was the divorce agreement she had yet to sign and a wedding ring she had found after rummaging through her night

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 6

Sarah didn’t go to work for three days. When the kitchen team called to ask about the menu, she simply told them to handle it themselves. The career she had once been so obsessed with felt utterly meaningless after I left. She curled up on the sofa, flipping through the divorce agreement again and again. From morning to night, she didn’t move an inch. The corners of the paper were crumpled from her tight grip, yet her signature remained blank. On her phone, our chat history ended on the afternoon of our anniversary. I had sent a message telling her that I had bought the groceries, but she never replied.Scrolling up, every one of her earlier messages was just a short reply, like “Yeah”, “Okay”, “Got it”, and “Don’t bother me.” She scrolled up message by message, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the phone tightly. On the fourth morning, the doorbell rang. Sarah’s hair had been a messy tangle for three days. Her eyes were dry, and her vision was slightly blurry. She was con

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 5

When Sarah arrived home, it was already the following afternoon. She had stayed at Mark’s house all night. The child’s fever had been fluctuating continuously. Between applying cold compresses, administering fever medication, and soothing the child, she had been busy until dawn, when his body temperature finally stabilized.Sarah was about to leave, but Mark, with reddened eyes, asked her to stay for dinner.“The child’s fever just broke. Could you… leave after dinner?”For reasons she could not explain, she sat down.At the dinner table, Mark served her food and mentioned how the child, in a daze, had held her hand. Listening to him, she somehow thought of me waiting for her at home and couldn’t help but feel irritated.By the time she left Mark’s house, the sky was bright. However, only when she pulled out her keys at the door did she suddenly remember what the occasion was yesterday. When the door opened, the house was quiet—so quiet that it didn’t seem like anyone lived the

  • Goodbye, Sarah   Chapter 4

Over the next few days, calm returned to our lives. The only difference was that I no longer left a light on for her. In the past, no matter how late she came home, a small nightlight would always be on in the living room, and a cup of hot chocolate would be sitting on the coffee table. Now, the living room was pitch-black, and the table was empty. One night, when she got back, she stood by the front door for a very long time. She walked in through the dark, her steps faltering slightly as she passed the table. I kept my eyes closed, but I could feel her gaze drifting in my direction. The next morning, to my surprise, she woke up earlier than I did and rummaged through the kitchen cabinets. When I walked over, I saw her holding a box of cereal, staring blankly at the cupboards. “There’s no food left at home,” she said, her tone sounding a bit unnatural. “Why haven’t you bought any groceries lately?”“I forgot.” I poured myself a glass of water and walked right past her. Sarah
