Chapter 3

Author: Fern Zoran
"Grandpa!" I stumbled over and laid Grandpa flat. "Call 911! Hurry!"

Only after I sent Grandpa off in the ambulance did I realize my legs had gone so weak that I could barely stand.

When I looked up, I saw the sketchpad Casey had left in the car. The subject of the painting wasn't Grandpa, but Tommy, who was behind him sketching the scenery.

The light above the emergency room stayed on for a long time.

Casey held my hand and comforted me, "Don't worry. Grandpa has always been blessed. He'll be fine."

"At that age, he should just stay home," Tommy complained. "Today's painting was a complete waste."

"What do you mean by that?" I finally couldn't hold back and punched him. "If you hadn't insisted on changing the location and going hiking, would Grandpa have ended up like this?"

Tommy tilted sideways and let himself fall.

"Yes, it's all my fault," he admitted. "So, what do you want me to do? How about I pay with my life for what happened to Mr. Coffey?"

As he spoke, he was about to ram into the wall. But Casey quickly stopped him.

"Lawrence, have you lost your mind? Do you want to drive Tommy to his death?"

Her face was gloomy as she carefully checked whether Tommy was hurt. After confirming he was fine, she abruptly slapped me across the face.

"Is it worth making such a scene over a stupid old geezer?"

My face quickly swelled up and burned with pain. I clenched my palms tightly, my chest hurting as if it were about to split open.

"Casey, you were the one who said we were family and that you'd definitely take good care of Grandpa. He used his retirement savings to hold a painting exhibition for you, and now you say something like this?"

Casey's eyes were cold and dark. "A lowly old geezer like him should feel honored to invest in a famous painter like me."

I looked at Casey and suddenly felt I didn't know her at all.

When we had just gotten married, she went with me to the countryside to visit Grandpa.

Grandpa brought out freshly picked peaches and apricots like they were precious treasures, and cooked up a whole table of food.

Casey ate with great relish and kept praising Grandpa's cooking. She took photos of the three of us, helped Grandpa with farm work, and bought him new clothes.

She even held my hand and promised Grandpa that she would take care of me forever.

Grandpa was so moved that he took out his retirement savings to hold a painting exhibition for her. All he asked was that she and I build a happy life together.

Later, she painted a realistic portrait of Grandpa harvesting wheat in the fields. With that painting, she won a major award and rose to fame overnight.

Back then, she called Grandpa pure, simple, a touching soul, and the very embodiment of the working people. But now she said he was lowly, and she didn't want to be with me anymore either.

"I'm going back to pack Grandpa's things for the hospital stay. I'll come by later."

With that, Casey took Tommy's hand and walked away.

I knew Casey's contempt and disgust weren't aimed at Grandpa, but at me. I was the one who had dragged Grandpa into this.

The light above the emergency room went out.

The doctor said Grandpa had been brought in in time, and that once he got through that night's critical period, he'd be out of danger.

In the ICU, Grandpa's thin, shriveled body was covered in tubes. The flickering light on the ventilator made my heart ache.

I kept vigil outside the hospital room all night, too scared to even blink. Yet, Casey never returned.

It wasn't until the next morning that she finally texted me.

"Tommy's studio ran into some trouble. I went to deal with it. I had Grandpa's things delivered by courier."

I turned off my phone expressionlessly.

Suddenly, the ICU monitors blared a sharp alarm.

Doctors and nurses rushed into Grandpa's hospital room.

"The patient is in acute heart failure and needs surgery immediately. Mr. Frazier, please pay 250 thousand dollars first. There's a specialty drug that has to be paid for up front before we can use it."

Unable to care about anything else, I rushed to the payment window, only to be told there was only 200 dollars left on my card.

"That's impossible! I have three million dollars on this card!"

This card was specifically for Grandpa's treatment expenses, and only Casey and I knew the passcode.

My hands were shaking so much when I called Casey.

"Did you take the money set aside for Grandpa's treatment?"

"Tommy needed money urgently, so I wired it to him to tide him over," Casey replied calmly.

"But that's the money for Grandpa's treatment. He needs surgery now. Wire back the money immediately!" My voice was so hoarse that it barely sounded like mine.

"I can't do that. The money's already been used," Casey stated.

"Casey, is Lawrence refusing to lend me the money? Didn't Mr. Coffey pull through yesterday? Why does he need surgery again now?"

Tommy's voice was barely audible.

The nurse kept pressing me, and I was so anxious that I stamped my feet.

"Casey, I'm begging you. I only need 250 thousand dollars. Grandpa really can't hold on any longer."

There was silence on the other end of the phone.

Tommy's muffled sobbing came through again. "But Casey, without this money, my studio is finished. And my dream and all the hard work I've put in over the years will be ruined too."

"Lawrence, there should be a limit to lying," Casey retorted without hesitation. "This money will go to Tommy first. We can raise the money for Grandpa's surgery through online crowdfunding. It'll take two weeks at most to raise the money."

With that, Casey hung up with a sharp click.

But Grandpa couldn't hold on much longer.

I watched the flickering light of the operating room and dug my nails into my palms. Gritting my teeth, I pulled up a fundraising website.

Suddenly, the light above the operating room went out.

The doctor emerged with a regretful expression and shook his head.

"Sorry, Mr. Frazier. We did everything we could. If we had been able to use the specialty drug, there might still have been a chance."

Casey suddenly threw herself down the stairs and screamed, "Lawrence, I know you hate me. But even if you can't forgive me, there's no need to kill me!"Casey's voice drew a crowd, and some people even started recording us.I frowned and said, "Watch what you say. You fell on your own just now. I didn't lay a finger on you."Not only did Casey refuse to admit it, but she even started a live stream on the spot. She was a famous painter, so she had many followers."Friends, I know there's been some negative talk about me online lately, and I'm not going to pretend I didn't do anything wrong. But I've been trying really hard to make amends and seek the victim's forgiveness."As she spoke, Casey turned the camera toward me. "But I never expected him to do more than refuse to forgive me. He actually pushed me down the stairs, trying to kill me."The people in the live stream had already started cursing me out.Looking at Casey, I suddenly felt she was just as shameless as Tommy.I d

"Casey, I will never forgive you," I said. With that, I turned to leave. But Casey suddenly dropped to her knees, the sound of her kneecaps hitting the stone slabs sharp and jarring.I looked back."You win, Lawrence," Casey said, looking utterly defeated. "I'm begging you—even if you won't come back, can you help me land an investor? We'll split the profits 50-50!""No," I replied softly, my voice still clear enough for her to hear.I then shut the door, cutting off everything outside.Instead of leaving, Casey knelt outside all night.Still, I didn't give in. When I passed her on my way to work the next morning, I didn't even slow my pace. She tried to call out to me, but having gone all night without a sip of water, she couldn't even make a sound.By the time I came home that evening, she was gone. A neighbor said she'd been carried off by an ambulance.I smiled and replied, "Serves her right."Casey had pretty much figured out that I really wasn't going to help her, so

Several months later, Tommy's sentence was handed down. He was convicted of intentional homicide, and given the egregious nature of the crime, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. When I went to see him, his parents were there too. The gray-haired old couple collapsed into tears in front of me and pleaded with me to write a letter of leniency."Tommy had it coming," I said. That single sentence was enough to set Tommy's mother, Amanda Bradford, off. She leaped up and cursed loudly at me.I watched her quietly. It was like looking at my former self, who had been frantic and helpless in my attempt to save Grandpa. Finally, I slowly walked into the visiting room and closed the door.Tommy stared at me blankly from behind the glass. When I picked up the phone, I heard him ask, "What are you doing here? Did you come to laugh at me?"I smiled and nodded."That's right. By the way, your art exhibition is three million dollars in the red. The creditors will be knocking on your door

Grandpa was buried next to the baby I lost when Casey was eight months pregnant.Even though it had been drizzling for days on end, I still went to see them every day. I always brought the chess pieces Grandpa loved, and the toys kids liked. That day, I arrived to find new chess pieces and toys already set before the grave. I walked over and picked them up. Then, I threw them away."Lawrence." Casey came out awkwardly from behind the tombstone. "How have you been lately?""Pretty good." I crouched and placed the white magnolias I had brought. "Please don't ever come again. They don't want to see you."Casey looked sorrowful. "Lawrence, I can explain. I really didn't know about Grandpa's situation. I thought it wasn't that serious, so—"I abruptly raised my head and looked at her coldly."Casey, don't make excuses for yourself! Stop making excuses with 'I didn't know' or 'I thought'. You knew exactly what was going on. You just despise Grandpa and me, and what disgusts you even m

I clenched my fists tightly. This report dates back to when Casey and I had our first child. We lost our baby at eight months because Casey insisted on going to the countryside with Tommy to do some sketching.Day after day, I'd sit and stare blankly at the doll I'd gotten for our baby.Casey held me and cried, "Lawrence, it's okay. We'll have another baby."She took me to see a doctor Tommy had recommended, and that was how I ended up with this report diagnosing me with delusional disorder. The report showed that I had been prescribed so many medications that I missed the optimal window for Grandpa's treatment.Casey had said that even if she died, she would never let this report be seen by anyone else. But now, she'd driven this blade straight into my heart once again.I thought it would hurt, but what came instead was a quiet sense of inevitability.I smirked and played the video of Tommy deliberately pushing Grandpa down, along with the Release of Remains Form."Die, you

When I arrived, Tommy was in the middle of talking with the investors. His face was plastered with the smug smile of a man convinced he couldn't fail. If the exhibition succeeded, he would become the youngest male painter to achieve such success, with a bright future ahead of him. When Tommy saw me, his smile froze."Lawrence, what's the meaning of this?"I ignored him and had people set up a funeral tent in the exhibition hall—black drapes, white banners, and mourning music.I then placed Grandpa's urn on a high platform, and the originally bright exhibition hall instantly turned into a mourning hall.Casey's expression was dark."Lawrence, what's all this about? You'd stoop to lying about Grandpa just to ruin Tommy's exhibition?"I walked past her and rapped on a wine glass, drawing every gaze in the room to me."Ladies and gentlemen, Tommy is a murderer. He seduced a married woman and is forcing me to divorce Casey. Are you really going to buy paintings from someone like him
