Chapter 2

Shrimp Basque
For the first two days in Sunbay, everything went smoothly. Ginnie behaved unusually well. As long as she did not cause trouble, there was no harm in taking her with us.

After we arrived in Sunbay, my parents were busy taking photos and posting them on social media. Seeing the smiles I had not seen from them in so long, my nerves finally eased after being on high alert the whole time.

The terror of dying in my previous life finally began to fade under the warm sunlight in front of me.

"Zach, this place is wonderful!" Mom lay on a beach chair in sunglasses. "You really know how to plan a trip. If we'd gone to the Northern Grasslands, we'd probably be shivering in the cold right now."

I smiled and handed Mom a cup of coconut water. "From now on, we'll spend the holiday season somewhere warm every year."

Ginnie sat beside us. She was smiling too, but she seemed distracted.

It stayed that way until the afternoon of the second day.

I was sunbathing when an unfamiliar number suddenly called my phone. The caller ID showed it was from the city where we resided. I had a bad feeling about it as I picked up the call.

"Hello? Is this Zach from Number 11 at Happy Gardens?" An enraged middle-aged woman's voice came through the phone.

I recognized the voice. It was Mrs. Jones, our next-door neighbor. "Mrs. Jones, it's me. How are you?"

"How… How am I? You still have the nerve to ask me that?!" Mrs. Jones was practically shouting. "What exactly is your family doing? Your place has been as loud as the carnival these past two nights! People are yelling and screaming, and I even heard sounds of dishes breaking!

"Didn't you say you were going on vacation? Why are there still so many people in your home?"

My mind went blank.

"Mrs. Jones, what did you say? There shouldn't be anyone in my home. My whole family is in Sunbay!"

"No one?" Mrs. Jones sneered. "Then where is the cigarette smoke in the hallway coming from? A little while ago, I even saw several men with brightly dyed hair go into your home! Zach, did your family rent your place to some gang?"

My parents heard everything that was said over the phone, and their faces went pale. Dad shot to his feet and asked, "What's going on? Someone broke into our home?"

I hung up, my fists clenching on their own.

Someone had gotten into our home.

But only our family had the keys, and all of us were in Sunbay.

Unless...

I turned sharply and stared at Ginnie, who was sitting in the corner. Her eyes flickered, and she did not dare look at me. "Ginnie, did you do something?"

Ginnie shrank back and muttered, "I... I didn't do anything..."

I did not have time to argue with her. I picked up my phone, tapped open our home security camera app, and looked at the live video feed. The moment the video appeared, my temples pounded, and I almost dropped my phone.

Around five or six men wearing strange outfits were sitting in the middle of our living room, playing instruments and shouting. For a moment, I wondered if I had opened the wrong app.

Was this still my home? It looked like a bar or a private room for karaoke. The floor was littered with cigarette butts and scraps from snacks.

Our luxury apartment had become a private club for punks.

"Is this... Our home?" Mom leaned over to look. Her eyes rolled back, and she nearly fainted.

"For the love of…! My home! What are they doing?!" Dad trembled with rage and pointed at the screen. "Who are these thugs? How did they get in?"

I held the phone and moved closer to Ginnie, shoving the screen right up to her face. "Ginnie, explain this clearly. Who are these people? How did they get into our home?"

At the very last second, the door into the hotel was kicked open from outside. The entire door flew inward and slammed onto the floor, kicking up a cloud of dust.Several bodyguards wearing sunglasses rushed in.Before Hugh could even react, the leader had already locked his wrist and thrown him over his shoulder. There was a yell from Hugh, but before he could fight back, two other bodyguards had already rushed forward as they pinned him to the floor and zip-tied him.Ginnie sat on the floor with her hair in a mess, completely stunned as she stared at this sudden turn of events. The bodyguards quickly stepped forward and cut the ropes binding us. "My apologies, Mr. Lane. We were late."The captain of the bodyguards walked up to me and respectfully handed me a bottle of water.I waved a hand to indicate it was fine. After moving my stiff, purplish wrists, I forced my aching body to stand and went to check on my parents first. Although my parents were weak and frightened, they w

Just as Ginnie was on the verge of breaking down, a whistle sounded outside the door. Then came the sound of a key turning. The door opened, and a man with dyed yellow hair and a floral shirt walked in. "Babe, the boat's ready! We'll eat something and then get started... Huh? What happened here?"Hugh noticed Ginnie sitting in the chair, staring at him with red eyes."What's wrong, Ginnie?" Hugh froze for a moment, then walked over and tried to put an arm around her. "Were these old idiots giving you grief? Don't be scared. After tonight, everything will be alright."Ginnie did not speak. Instead, she stood and shoved his hand away. "Hugh, I want to ask you something.""Ask away. Why are you so serious? You're scaring me." Hugh said with a confused look, but he was still grinning.Ginnie raised my phone and shoved the screen into his face. "Who is this woman? Who is this child?"The smile on Hugh's face froze, and panic flashed through his eyes. "You... You investigated me?"Hu

"Get married?" I laughed softly."Oh, Ginnie. You're twenty-four this year. Why are you still as naive as a sixteen-year-old teenager? Do you really believe a word out of some punk's mouth? What are you going to build that marriage on? My family's inheritance, just so he can pay his gambling debts?"Ginnie's face changed slightly, and her eyes flickered. "What do you know? Hugh owes a little money, but he told me the truth. He only ended up owing twenty thousand dollars because a friend cheated him on a business venture."That little amount means nothing. Once I have the inheritance, I can easily help him pay it all off. He promised me that after the debt is paid, he would go straight and never gamble again.""Twenty thousand dollars?" I shook my head, my tone turning cold and firm. "Ginnie, you're too stupid. Do you really think he only owes two hundred thousand? I discovered your relationship long ago. I also knew that person you were dating was Hugh. I was worried about you at t

"...Yes, I'm in the room watching them. Don't worry. They're tied up tight..."Really? That's great! Okay, have fun. Remember to take lots of photos and post them on Facebook!"Set the location at the beach. Make it look like our family is having fun there... Okay. Love you. Kisses."After hanging up, Ginnie seemed to be in an excellent mood. She turned around and looked at me smugly. "Zach, Hugh is here in Sunbay too. He just landed. I was worried about making an alibi earlier, but this is great!"Over the next few days, I'll have a nice vacation with Hugh. While I'm at it, I'll use your phones to post on your social media. I'll make it look like you're still happily traveling."After saying that, she taped my mouth shut, then left the room while humming a song. The next two days were pure torment. The days were long and enduring for us. I could only judge the passage of time by how many times Ginnie came in.She would come back once a day and feed us a little water and dry bre

I didn't know how long I'd been unconscious. When I finally came to, my head was still spinning. Instinctively, I tried to raise a hand to rub my temples, but my arm wouldn't move.I lowered my head and saw that my wrists were tightly bound to the back of a chair with rope. Because the ropes slowed down my blood circulation, my fingertips had already gone cold. I also realized my feet were tied tightly.I looked around and realized we were still in the same hotel. My parents were on two chairs not far from me, their hands and feet also bound. Their heads hung low, and their breathing was faint. Clearly, they were still unconscious. When I saw that their chests were still rising and falling, my heart finally eased a little."You woke up faster than I expected, Zach." A familiar voice came from the corner.I turned my head around and saw Ginnie sitting on the couch. She put down her phone and walked up to me. "Ginnie..." My throat was painfully dry and hoarse, and I forced out a

"Ginnie! What are you doing? Put the knife down!" My mom was terrified. She wanted to run over, but she did not dare move.Dad panicked too. "Ginnie, we can talk this through. Don't do anything stupid!"When Ginnie saw that she had found my parents' weakness, tears rolled down her cheeks. "Yes, Hugh is my boyfriend! But he's the love of my life! He only owes a little money. He had no other way out, so he's simply borrowing a few things to get through this. It's not like he won't return them!"If you call the police and have him arrested now, his whole life will be ruined! Then, I don't have a reason to live either! My parents are dead, anyway. I'm just dead weight in this world!"As she spoke, she moved the blade as if she were about to cut her neck."No! Don't be reckless!" Mom cried as she rushed over and grabbed my arm. "Zach, don't call the police yet. Please don't call them yet!"I looked at her in disbelief. "Mom, he's emptying our home! He's stealing Dad's collection! He s
