In the tiny aircraft, Shannon squirmed in her seat. The high-powered pain medication she’d received at the hospital had left her system, and her entire body ached.

“You can get up and move around if you need to,” Fuller pointed out, and when she frowned in confusion, he took off his seat belt, stood, and gestured to her.

Shannon nodded her understanding and followed suit, wincing.

“She’s hurting,” Leah observed. “Guess the good stuff wore off.”

Fuller mimed you okay? and received a mirthless chuckle from Shannon.

“No, and you wouldn’t be either if you’d been thrown twenty feet and landed on concrete on your face, then caught fire,” she griped. “Everything hurts.”

Leah rummaged through her handbag and pulled out an economy-size bottle of Tylenol, holding it up in triumph to shake it at her roommate.

“I absolutely love you,” Shannon sighed with relief and held out her hand. “Gimme twelve of em.”

Leah solemnly shook her head and held up two fingers.

“Fine,” Shannon muttered. “Just… anything, please.”

Leah handed two pills over, then scribbled you’re loving my great big ol’ purse now, aren’t ya?

“I really am,” Shannon agreed before swallowing the Tylenol. “But it still cracks me up that it’s almost as big as you are.”

“If we’re going to be hiding out longer than a couple of days, we’re going to need extra supplies - bandages, surgical tape, and aloe vera,” Leah mentioned to the agent. “I don’t think what the hospital sent her home with will last very long.”

“Once we get there, we’ll go get whatever she needs,” Fuller responded. “The biggest thing is, when you get where you’re going, you’ll need to stay put, and stay inside as much as possible.”

The ‘fasten seat belt’ sign flashed on, quashing any continued conversation, and the three retook their seats for landing.

Pete was leaning against the side of the hangar when the plane landed and taxied into the structure. Fuller exited the aircraft first and walked over to meet Pete, who had moved toward the plane.

“Hey Pete, long time no see. How ya been?” Fuller said, hand outstretched.

“Not bad, buddy, how about you?” Pete responded as they shook.

“Pretty good, all things considered. Your people read you in?” Fuller asked as they approached the plane.

“Yep, for the most part. I have a couple of questions, though. Why are there two of them with you?”

Fuller grinned.

“Her roommate insisted on coming along. She’s quite the little firecracker, too. You’ll see for yourself in just a moment. What’s the second question?”

“Why didn’t you deal with our office up there?”

Fuller leveled his gaze at his old friend.

“It’s a long story, and I’ll fill you in on the details later. Let’s just say I need someone I know I can trust working this.”

“Fair enough. Shall we?”

Agent Fuller led the way back up the short steps into the passenger compartment, with Pete right behind him.

Pete ducked to enter the cabin, then stood upright. As he did, he was immediately accosted by a tiny woman with closely cropped dark brown hair, whose hazel eyes flashed a challenge as she stood blocking his path.

“Badge and I.D. please,” she barked, and he raised an eyebrow but complied.

She reviewed them carefully then returned them, pivoted, and wrote the third passenger a note. When she held up her notebook, Pete’s eyes moved to the woman being shown the message.

He only barely stopped his jaw from dropping open as his heart melted. Standing before him was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

Pete stared, taking in her long, dark red hair and brilliant aquamarine eyes. He noticed her tall, willowy frame, the light smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks, and her naturally long eyelashes.

And he felt his fists clenching as he also noticed the scrapes marring her milky white skin along her chin and nose. His rage built inside him to see the large and already bruising knot on her forehead, and the pain and fear showing in those amazing eyes. He was suddenly obsessed with finding whoever had hurt her so he could strangle them with his bare hands.

Swallowing down his unexpected anger took every bit of self-control Pete Jenkins possessed, and he knew at that moment that he would, without question, be willing to die to protect her if that’s what it took.

“Ladies, this is Pete Jenkins with the U.S. Marshals,” Fuller announced. “He’s taking point on keeping you safe until this is over. Pete, this is Leah Culverton, and Shannon Rivers.”

Shannon, who nodded that she’d seen Leah’s message, stepped forward and held out her hand.

“Pleased to meet you,” she said quietly, and the touch of her skin against his sent a vibration throughout Pete’s system.

He watched her eyes go wide for a moment, and thought to himself did she feel that, too?

Get it together, dude, you’re on the job, he reminded himself, and murmured, “Likewise,” before reluctantly letting go of her hand.

***

Shannon just managed to stifle a gasp of surprise. The moment she’d locked eyes with the stranger she’d felt her pulse quicken.

He’s tall, over six feet for sure. And built. Those blue eyes of his are amazing, she’d thought to herself before she could help it. I want to run my fingers through that coal-black hair…

Seriously? Now is not the time, girl! Get a grip!

She’d inwardly focused on restoring her heart rate to a reasonable level, then stepped forward with much more confidence than she felt, greeted him, and offered to shake hands.

His large, strong hand had wrapped warmly around hers, and the sensation of electricity sparking between them had almost buckled her knees.

Next came the realization that something big and unexpected and, well, intense was happening, and it made her eyes widen.

She saw a flash of something – recognition? acknowledgement? - in his arctic blue eyes as well, then watched it disappear as he shuttered away whatever he was thinking.

His lips moved, saying something in a voice that she just knew would have made her pulse ratchet up again if she could hear it, then pulled his hand back.

***

Pete paused, then spoke again, this time to Agent Fuller.

“We should get going. It’s about a forty-minute drive. Let me get your suitcases.”

Fuller pulled the bags down from the overhead compartment, handing one to Pete and keeping the other.

“Let’s go,” Fuller said, gesturing with a wave.

“You can hear me?” Pete stood, his face alight with joy, and immediately crossed the room to her.“Every single sexy baritone syllable.”He wrapped his left arm around her waist and kissed her.“Good. Then listen very, very closely,” he murmured in her ear. “I love you, Shannon.”“I love you too, Pete,” she answered, her heart flooding with joy as she wrapped her arms around his waist. “I love you too. And let me guess. Now we need to wait until you’re all healed up?”He leaned down and pressed his lips against the pulse point just under her jawline.“I don’t think I can wait that long,” he growled. “Can you?”“That would be no,” she confirmed. “So how about you let me lead this time? I promise to be very, very careful with that right arm.”He stood upright again and looked into her eyes, a smoldering smile beginning to curve his lips.“I’m intrigued,” he murmured. “And seriously turned on by that.”“I can tell,” she murmured back as she giggled, feeling his arousal pressing against h

You fainted, and he’s in surgery still, Leah answered.“How long was I out? And why am I hooked up to an IV?”About a half-hour. The IV is because you are a bit dehydrated. A precaution only, don’t worry. Although, you did do quite a number on your burns, bouncing that rifle off them like you did.“Where are my clothes? I put my necklace in the front pocket of my jeans,” Shannon whispered as she sat up frantically.Leah held up the white plastic bag containing her belongings.Shannon nodded and exhaled a sigh as she leaned back.“What’s next?”They’re about to discharge you, and you will get dressed then come upstairs with me to the surgical waiting room.“Okay. Any word on him yet?”Leah shook her head. The nurse came by twenty-five minutes later to take out her IV and lecture both of them about taking better care of Shannon’s preexisting injuries.Leah listened politely, and then rolled her eyes and conveyed the gist to Shannon in a not-so-polite summation once the nurse was gone.S

The driver swung the trespassing car hard to the left to avoid hitting the three parked cars, and Pete was as visible in the high beams as if it were daylight outside. As soon as he was silhouetted, Pete began to run in a zig-zag pattern, turning around occasionally to fire his pistol at the men shooting at him.Shannon watched anxiously as he seemingly dodged every round. Then he turned yet again, and she saw him fly backward, then crumple to the ground. No! Shannon’s mind screamed as she zeroed in on Duffy, gun still in his hand, running to where Pete had gone down. She said a prayer, took a breath, focused, and squeezed the trigger, taking out Duffy’s right knee. His pistol flew from his hand as he collapsed to the ground clutching his leg, his contorted face in her scope proof of his screams carrying through the still night air.She watched as Duffy’s accomplice also went down, presumably from Larry’s rifle.Fighting back a sob, Shannon flung the rifle across her back by its strap

Duffy’s friend made good time in the air and was depositing his passengers at Blue Grass Regional Airport just after sunset.“Another fifty or sixty miles to go,” Duffy informed Charlie as he checked his laptop to verify Pete’s truck hadn’t moved in the last two hours. “Get us a rental car.”Kid better watch his mouth, he ain’t running this show, Charlie grumbled in his head even as he walked away to do Duffy’s bidding.***Shannon and Pete sat side-by-side, their backs against the wall of their tiny deer blind. Pete used a penlight to illuminate his words to her, and she softly spoke her answers as they waited in the dark for trouble to arrive. He flipped back through Larry’s notepad, grinned, and showed her what Larry had written.Shannon gasped.“So, he’s got a thing for Leah?”It sure seems that way based on this, doesn’t it?“It does,” Shannon agreed. “Well, don’t tell her I told you this, but I know for a fact she’s got a crush on him, too.”Get out. Really?Shannon nodded.Huh.

“It hasn’t moved in the last forty-five minutes,” Duffy announced. “It’s time to take a plane ride.”“You arranged a plane?”“I have a buddy that’s a pilot, and he owes me one,” Duffy explained, as he dialed and waited.“Mark? Duffy. Hey, I need a lift, man. You ready? Great. We’ll meet you at Meacham in a half-hour.”He hung up and grinned at Charlie. “Let’s go.”***The quartet firmed up their plans, and Leah insisted on changing out Shannon’s bandages before they traveled to separate sides of the property.“All good,” she pronounced, giving Shannon the ‘ok’ symbol. They moved quickly out to the shed to liberate the ATV’s from storage. As they did, Larry tossed Pete a walkie-talkie.“Channel two,” he said, and Pete nodded.“Meet you guys back here,” Shannon said with a smile as she climbed up behind Pete, hooking her arms around his waist.“Wait,” Leah told Pete, and rushed back into the cabin. She reappeared a few moments later with a pen. “I can’t find my small notepad.”“Here,” L

  • Guarding His Lover   Chapter Ten

As promised, just before they reached the Little Rock city limits, Pete pulled into a roadside rest stop and gently shook Shannon awake.Follow the signs to head toward Nashville, and wake me when we get there, all right? he wrote and showed her.She nodded and smiled, then exited the truck to make use of the rest stop’s facilities before trading seats with him.Leah yawned and stretched from the back seat.“Bathroom break, yay,” she said blearily, and Pete chuckled as she followed Shannon to the ladies’ room. His burner phone buzzed, indicating an incoming text from Larry.Pete glanced at the message and was dumbfounded.Duffy? Seriously? Are you sure about that? he typed back.Positive. He was mentioned by name, Pete. How far out are you?About halfway.Get a move on. Need to form battle plan as soon as you get here.Roger that.“Holy crap,” Pete murmured, just as Shannon and Leah returned to the truck.“What?” Leah asked him.“Duffy. He’s in Creach & Langford’s pocket.”Leah stared
