Chapter 9: The First Memory

POV: Evana

The woman was crying before I ever saw her.

Soft sobs, echoing through a room too dark to place. I stood in a doorway I hadn’t chosen, unable to move, unable to speak, with no memory of how I’d gotten there.

Then I saw him.

Arthur’s father. The late Alpha, standing beside a heavy desk, his face set in a seriousness I recognized without knowing why. A woman stood across from him, someone I’d never seen before, her fear plain even in the half-light.

“You don’t understand,” she whispered.

“I understand perfectly,” he said.

“They’ll find her.”

“Not if we protect her.”

She shook her head, desperate. “The council will kill her if they learn what she is.”

My heart slammed against my ribs. Who were they talking about?

Then he said something that froze the whole dream around me.

“The Moon-Blood must never be discovered.”

I gasped, and the sound seemed to carry, the woman’s eyes snapped toward the doorway, toward me, wide with sudden terror.

“You promised.”

“I did.”

“What about the girl?”

He looked down. “She must remain hidden.”

My head spun. The room blurred at the edges, the woman’s voice growing distant, fading into something I could barely hold onto.

“One day,” she said, “she’ll remember.”

I woke up screaming.

I sat upright, tears already streaming down my face before I understood why I was crying at all. I touched my cheeks like I could figure out the source of them through touch alone.

The dream had felt different. Too real. I could still catch the ghost of that room’s scent, still hear the exact pitch of the woman’s voice, still see the precise shape of fear on Arthur’s father’s face.

I looked down at my own hands.

That wasn’t a dream.

The thought arrived without asking permission. It was a memory. But how could I remember something I’d never lived?

I climbed out of bed. I needed answers, and I knew exactly where to look for them.

His father’s study.

The study had stayed locked for years, since before I’d ever set foot in this house, as far as I knew. But I’d found the door while wandering the upper hallway one evening, restless, and the old lock had given way after enough patience.

Dust hung in the air when I stepped inside. Everything felt strangely, unsettlingly familiar, the desk, the shelves, the dead fireplace, like I’d stood in this exact room before, in a life I couldn’t account for.

I checked the desk. Nothing. The drawers, empty.

Then I remembered the vision, his father standing beside this same desk, close enough to touch it.

I knelt. Ran my fingers along the floorboards until one gave under the pressure differently than the rest.

I pressed it. It shifted.

Underneath was a small metal box. Inside, a single envelope.

My name was written across the front in handwriting I’d never seen and somehow recognized anyway.

EVANA.

I stared at it, my pulse loud in my own ears. Why would a dead man have written my name on anything?

I reached for the seal.

The door slammed open behind me.

I spun around. Arthur stood in the frame, his eyes locking onto the envelope in my hand, all the color draining out of his face in an instant.

“What are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

“This is my father’s study.”

“And apparently he left something for me.”

His gaze didn’t move off the envelope. “Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Evana.”

“I want answers.”

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

“Neither do you.”

That landed. I saw it land.

I held the envelope against my chest. “Why did your father write my name?”

He stepped closer. “I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

His jaw tightened. “I’m not afraid.”

“You were afraid when you saw the book.”

He said nothing to that, because there was nothing true he could say.

I stepped back. “I’m opening it.”

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know what’s inside.”

“Then we’ll find out together.”

I broke the seal.

He reached for the envelope at the same moment, and our hands collided over it, and the instant they touched, something in him detonated.

Arthur staggered back, a growl tearing out of his throat that didn’t sound entirely human, his eyes flashing gold-bright. Something in me answered it before I could think to stop it, power rushing through the room fast enough to rattle the windows and gutter every candle at once.

We stared at each other, both of us shaken, neither of us understanding what had just happened between two hands and a sealed envelope.

Then his eyes dropped back to the paper.

Fear. Recognition. Something underneath both that looked almost like grief.

“My father,” he said, quiet, “wrote this before he died.”

POV: ArthurI didn’t sleep. The letter stayed on my desk until dawn. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the same line.My death was not an accident. For years I’d accepted the official story without question. My father, killed in a territorial conflict. The enemy attacked. He fought. He lost.Simple. Clean.Nothing about it felt clean anymore. At sunrise I went to the archive beneath the council hall. Only the Alpha, the Beta, and a handful of elders had unrestricted access, and I used mine for the first time in years.I pulled the file with my father’s name on it.ALPHA ADRIAN WOLFE.The official death report. Cause of death: severe internal injuries, blood loss. That matched what I’d been told. The dates didn’t.The territorial conflict had ended on the seventeenth. His medical examination was dated the nineteenth. His death certificate said the eighteenth.Three different dates.“That can’t be right,” I said, to no one.I dug further. The medical report carried a signature that belo

POV: ArthurThe room had gone completely still.I stared at the envelope in Evana’s hand.My father’s handwriting. Unmistakable. The sharp letters. The slight slant. The way he pressed harder whenever he was angry. But seeing his hand on an envelope addressed to my mate made no sense. He’d died years before Evana and I became mates.Years before I even knew she existed.“Open it,” Evana said.I looked at her. “Together.”She hesitated. Then nodded.I pulled the letter free. The moment my fingers touched the paper, my wolf stirred, not violently this time. Almost reverently.I unfolded it. Only a few pages.Arthur,If you are reading this, then I am already gone. There is something about your future mate that you must understand.I stopped. Evana’s eyes had gone wide.I kept reading. The woman destined to stand beside you may carry a bloodline that has remained dormant for generations. My throat tightened. I looked at her. She was staring at the page like it might vanish if she blinke

  • HE CALLED HER PLUMP, NOW HE’LL BEG TO KEEP HER   Chapter 8: His Jealousy

POV: EvanaI’d learned something about myself over the last few days.I was tired of being afraid. Not entirely, fear doesn’t disappear just because you decide you’re finished with it. But something in me had shifted. Maybe it was the strength that had surged through me in the training yard. Maybe it was the book, or the dreams, or simply exhaustion with letting everyone around me decide how small I was allowed to be.Whatever it was, I wasn’t giving it back.Visiting warriors arrived that morning from a neighboring territory, here to discuss some border dispute I hadn’t been told the details of. I barely noticed them until one broke away from the group and crossed the courtyard toward me, tall, broad-shouldered, dark hair, an easy smile that didn’t ask permission before showing up.“You’re Evana, aren’t you?”“Yes.”“Darius.” He offered it simply, like a name didn’t need to come with credentials attached.“Nice to meet you.”“I heard about what happened during training.”My stomach

  • HE CALLED HER PLUMP, NOW HE’LL BEG TO KEEP HER   Chapter 7: The Woman who knows

POV: EvanaI’d never seen the old woman before. She lived past the eastern boundary, where the trees grew close together and patrols rarely bothered walking that far.I’d only gone there because I needed somewhere quiet. Somewhere no one looked at me like a problem still waiting to be solved. The forest was peaceful.Until her voice cut through it.“You shouldn’t be here.”I turned. An old woman stood between the trees, she had silver hair loose around her shoulders, leaning heavily on a wooden staff.I stayed cautious. “I’m sorry.”She stared at me. Her eyes went wide.“You.”“Do I know you?”She stepped closer, surprise sliding into something that looked almost like recognition.“Moon-Blood.”A chill went straight through me.“What did you call me?”Her face went pale. “You’re alive.”I stepped toward her. “What does that mean?”“Nothing. You need to leave.”“No.”Her grip tightened on the staff. “You don’t understand.”“Then explain it to me.”She studied my face a long moment.“Yo

  • HE CALLED HER PLUMP, NOW HE’LL BEG TO KEEP HER   Chapter 6: Too Strong

POV: ArthurSomething was wrong with Evana.I stood in the training field long after everyone else had left, staring at the spot where she’d thrown a warrior twice her size. The memory wouldn’t leave me alone. She’d moved too fast.Too easily. And when she grabbed him, I felt something.A pulse. Not physical. But something deeper.Something that traveled through the air and landed straight in my wolf.Mine.My jaw tightened.I hated that word.Hated how naturally my wolf had reached for it.Evana was my wife.My Luna. That was all she was supposed to be.An unwanted complication, forced on both of us the day our fathers signed an agreement neither of us had a say in.She was, Quiet. Obedient. Easy to manage.Instead she’d stood in the middle of my training field and made one of my strongest men look like a pup who’d never held a fight.I turned toward the manor.“Arthur.”I stopped.Damon. My Beta. He’d been watching me the whole time.“You’ve been staring at that spot for ten minutes
