The attendant set a glass of champagne on the small table beside me without my asking for it, something about waiting clients and complimentary service, and I didn't refuse it. I sat in the chair they'd angled toward the fitting area and let the cold flute rest against my palm, condensation beading against my fingers, and for the first time in longer than I wanted to admit, I felt something close to contentment settle into my chest.

I had done something today I hadn't planned to do.

❄️DWAYNE❄️"Yeah. With her boss."Wayne lifted one shoulder and let it drop, the way a person does when he is mentioning something that does not matter. "She left this morning. She's coming back in three days."I kept my arm out with the books still in my hand, and I did not move it.With her boss.I did not have to ask who that was. I only had to count. My father had left on a business trip this morning, for three days, and I had sat at the kitchen counter and let him say goodbye to the side of my head. Now a boy wearing my face was telling me his mother had left on a business trip this morning, for three days, with the man she worked for, and she worked in my father's building. The garden went very quiet around me. I could hear the fountain, and one bee somewhere in the hedge, and my own breathing, which I made slower on purpose."Are you okay?" Wayne asked.I looked at him. He was tilting his head a little, waiting, with nothing in his face except real concern, and it made somethin

🫧WAYNE🫧Rhiannon made me eggs before she left for work, the same way Mama does, except she stood by the stove the whole time looking nervous about it, like the eggs might jump out of the pan if she looked away."Eat it all," she said, sliding the plate in front of me. "And this." She set the little orange bottle down next to my juice, already shaking one pill out into her palm. "Your mama wrote down exactly how to do this, so I'm not messing it up.""I know how to take it myself," I said."I know you do. I just want to watch the first time. Make sure I'm doing my part right."I swallowed it with the juice and she watched my throat like she actually expected to see it go down, which made me laugh a little, and she smiled like that was the whole point of doing it that way."I have to go to work now," she said, crouching down to my level. "You remember the rules?""Garden only. Don't go past the fountain. Don't talk to strangers." I counted them off on my fingers the way I always did.

♠️RAYMOND♠The manager played his part better than I expected him to.I'd given him the instructions before any of us left the city, a short list delivered through a single phone call that took less than two minutes. Tell me there's only one suite available. Act surprised when I ask why. Apologize enough to make it convincing. I hadn't expected him to commit to it the way he did, hands twisting, voice cracking at exactly the right register, the whole performance so complete that somewhere in the middle of it I actually felt the old reflex rising in my chest, the one that wanted to fire him on the spot for incompetence, before I remembered, half a second too late, that the incompetence belonged to me.I don't know what this is, whatever version of myself I've been running for the past week. Staging a room shortage like some teenager engineering a reason to stay close to someone. Buying out half a boutique because watching her try on clothes gave me more satisfaction than closing a nine

🌹TESSA🌹The car pulled onto the tarmac and I saw it before Oliver had even brought us to a full stop, white and sleek against the gray runway, the Reddington crest painted small and precise along the tail.A custom Bombardier.I didn't know plane models the way some people did, but I recognized money when it sat in front of me shaped like an aircraft, the kind of private jet that didn't get chartered, that existed because one single man had decided it should exist exactly the way it did and paid whatever that cost.I stepped out of the car in my new heels, the white blazer sitting crisp against my shoulders, my hair still loose the way the stylist had left it, and I felt something I hadn't felt in longer than I wanted to count. Not just put together.Seen.The way Raymond's eyes had gone wide back at the boutique, the champagne glass slipping clean out of his hand and shattering against the marble, replayed itself in my head the entire walk across the tarmac, and I let myself hold o

🌹TESSA🌹My eyes stayed wide long enough that the attendant had already turned back to him for confirmation before I managed to find my own voice."Sir, that's really not necessary—""Sit down if you want, Ms. Hart." He was already moving toward the first rack, like my protest hadn't fully registered as one, just background noise filtered out before it reached him. "Or don't. Whichever you prefer."I didn't sit. I stood near the entrance with my hands empty at my sides, my duffel already gone, swallowed into the trunk of the car the second Oliver had taken it from me outside, and I watched four members of staff materialize out of nowhere, numbers that could not possibly have been standing in that store a minute ago."Bring everything," he said, not loud, because he never needed volume to make people move. "Shoes. Bags. Whatever jewelry you keep in the back for clients who ask. Perfume. Trousers, suits, skirts, blazers. And evening wear."The manager's eyebrows lifted for exactly one
