SIMON

The eastern ward stone sat half buried in packed earth at the base of an old oak that had probably stood on this land since before the pack claimed it, its surface carved with symbols worn the color of old bone with age. Simon crouched in front of it with his fingers spread just above the surface, not quite touching, the way his grandmother had taught him when he was young enough to still be frightened of the wards rather than responsible for reading them.

The morning was cold in that par

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 55: THE FEAR BENEATH THE FEAR

IRENEI find Margaret exactly where I always find her, at the reading table near the back of the restricted library, though tonight there is no book open in front of her, only her hands folded quietly atop the wood, as though she knew I would come and decided to simply wait rather than pretend to be occupied with something else."You saved a child today," she says, before I have even fully closed the iron door behind me. "Word travels fast in a pack this size, even down here.""I did." I sit across from her, my body still carrying the particular hollowness that follows whenever I let the gift move through me fully, a tiredness that sleep alone never quite fixes. "The whole medical wing saw it. Naomi won't stop thanking me. An elder was there too, I think, though I couldn't tell you which one.""How does it feel," Margaret asks, "being seen like that. Fully, without hiding any part of it."I think about the question longer than I expect to, turning it over the way I have turned over so

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 54: THE MESSAGE BENEATH THE MASK

DANIELI wait until the medical wing has cleared before I let my hands stop shaking. It is not fear, precisely. I have seen manifestations before, catalogued dozens of them across a career spent moving quietly through packs that never fully trusted me and never fully needed to, because I gave them no reason to look closer than the surface I built so carefully for exactly this purpose. But I have never seen anything like what Irene did tonight, the totality of it, the way the gift moved through her without hesitation or restraint, without the careful, controlled trickle she used on the warrior weeks ago when she was still testing the boundaries of what she dared to reveal.Tonight she held nothing back. Tonight an entire room watched a dying child return to life beneath her hands, and I stood among them wearing the same expression of careful, professional concern I have worn since the day I arrived here, while beneath it, something colder and far more focused was already assembling its

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 53: WHAT SHE NO LONGER HIDES

IRENEThe scream comes from the eastern row of family quarters, sharp and panicked in a way that pulls every head in the medical wing up at once, and I am moving before I have fully decided to, my body responding to the particular pitch of that sound the way it has responded to crisis for years now, faster than thought, faster than caution.Naomi meets me halfway across the courtyard, her daughter limp in her arms, and even from a distance I can see the wrongness of it, the way the small girl's head lolls against her mother's shoulder, the grey undertone already creeping into skin that should be flushed with the ordinary warmth of a child at play."She was fine an hour ago." Naomi's voice cracks on every other word, her steps stumbling as she closes the distance between us. "She was fine, she was playing with the other children, and then she just, she just collapsed, and I don't, I don't know what happened, please, Irene, please.""Bring her inside. Now." I am already turning, already

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 52: THE LINE BETWEEN MAN AND WOLF

ASHFORDI tell myself I am only walking the perimeter, the way I do most nights since the attack, checking the wards, making certain the eastern gate holds against whatever else might be waiting beyond it. I tell myself this even as my feet carry me toward the medical wing instead of the tree line, even as I know, with the particular dishonesty of a man lying to himself about something he has already decided to do, that I am not patrolling anything at all.The mark has not stopped burning since I left Celeste's quarters two nights ago. It ebbs sometimes, quiets to something bearable, and then flares again without warning, sharp enough to catch my breath, and tonight it has been building steadily for the better part of an hour, worse than it has been since I first noticed it, until I can no longer convince myself that pacing my study is doing anything except delaying whatever my body is trying to tell me to do.I see the light in the medical wing window before I see them. A single lamp

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 51: THE FOREHEAD KISS

IRENEI do not go back to my quarters after I leave the restricted library. I tell myself I am simply not tired enough to sleep, though the truth is closer to the opposite, that I am too tired to be alone with the weight Margaret handed me tonight, too raw from the shape of what a severing might actually require to sit in silence with only my own thoughts for company. So I walk to the medical wing instead, telling myself I am only checking on Tom's overnight chart, and I am not surprised, not really, to find Daniel still there at the small desk in the corner, a mug of something gone cold beside him, his sleeves rolled up in the particular way of a man who has stopped noticing the late hour entirely. He looks up when I come in, and whatever is showing on my face must tell him more than I intend, because he sets down his pen immediately and studies me with a focus that makes something in my chest ease slightly, the relief of being seen without having to explain myself first."You've bee

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    CHAPTER 50: A POWER BEYOND HERS

IRENEMargaret is not at her table when I come down the following evening, and for a moment I stand just inside the iron door, unsettled by the emptiness of a room I have only ever seen occupied by her steady presence. Then I hear the soft scrape of a ladder shifting against the far shelves, and I find her there, reaching for something high above her head with the careful patience of a woman who has learned, over many decades, not to rush her own body past what it is willing to give her."You came back sooner than I expected," she says, without turning, as though she recognized my footstep before I said a word."I couldn't stop thinking about what you told me." I move closer, steadying the ladder without being asked, an old habit from years of hospital work where I learned to catch what needed catching before anyone had to ask. "About the sacrifice. About my mother."Margaret climbs down slowly, a thin volume tucked under one arm, and studies my face in the blue lamplight. "You look l

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    Chapter 6: The Weight of Healing

IRENE The first week at Crescent Moon Pack passed in a blur of sleepless nights and careful deception.I learned the layout of the pack's medical wing within hours. It was smaller than I expected, more intimate than the human hospital where I had trained. Three beds, a surgical table that looked d

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    Chapter 5: The Return

Irene. The car stopped at the edge of pack territory, and my hands trembled against my medical bag.One year. One year since I had crossed this border as a broken, wolfless failure. Now I was returning as Dr. Irene Cross."You sure about this, Doc?" The human driver looked nervous. "This place giv

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    Chapter 4 : The Alpha's Search

Ashford.ONE YEAR LATER.I stood at my office window, watching the afternoon sun cast long shadows across the pack grounds. Somewhere out there, she existed. My mate. The she-wolf I had marked a year ago and lost in the same breath. The bond mark on my shoulder burned, a constant reminder of my fai

  • HIS FATED LUNA DOCTOR    Chapter 3 : The Exile

Irene.I woke to silence. Not the comfortable silence of sleep, but the empty silence of something vital missing. I reached for my wolf, the way I had done every morning since I was twelve, and found nothing. Just a vast, aching void where she used to be.A sob tore from my throat before I could st
