What She Wouldn't Say

Alexander's Pov

Dr. Sarah Mitchell's office smelled like lavender and antiseptic, calm in a way nothing in my life had felt for months.

"Mr. Hunt." She studied me over her glasses, clearly deciding how much to trust me. "Lily gave permission for us to speak, which tells me something important. She still hopes, even if she won't admit it."

"How is she? Really?"

Dr. Mitchell set down her pen. "Physically, the pregnancy is high risk. She's underweight, exhausted, and has skipped multiple appointments. Emotionally, she's dealing with severe depression, Mr. Hunt. She's told me, more than once, that she doesn't believe she deserves good things. That belief runs so deep I'm not sure she fully trusts her own judgment anymore."

Every word landed like a stone in my chest. "This is my fault."

"Perhaps some of it is. But blame doesn't heal her. Consistency might." She leaned forward. "If you're serious about being part of her life, you cannot waver. Women like Lily have spent their whole lives believing they're disposable. One moment of impatience from you will confirm every fear she has."

"I'm not going anywhere. Not this time."

"Then show her that with your feet planted, not just your words." She paused. "There's something else. She mentioned a man named Vincent Shaw threatening her family. Does that name mean anything to you?"

Cold dread crawled up my spine. "It means everything is about to get more complicated than I thought."

I left her office with a plan forming, equal parts desperate and determined. I would be patient with Lily. But Vincent Shaw was a different problem entirely, one I intended to end permanently.

**********

That evening, Marcus appeared at my rented apartment, unannounced, his expression unusually serious for a man who typically wore smugness like cologne.

"We need to talk," he said, pushing past me into the small living room. "About Dad. About Lily's father."

"What are you talking about?"

Marcus dropped a folder onto my coffee table, thick with documents. "James Hunt orchestrated the bankruptcy of a small hotel chain eleven years ago. He used Vincent Shaw to bury the owner in debt he couldn't survive, then bought the assets for pennies once the man was destroyed."

"Why does this matter to me?"

Marcus's eyes were steady, almost gentle, which frightened me more than anger would have. "Because that owner was Robert Morgan. Lily's father."

The room tilted slightly around me. "That's not possible."

"I have the documents. Bank records, Vincent Shaw's old ledgers, everything. Dad destroyed her family, Alexander. Robert Morgan didn't lose his business by bad luck. He lost it because our father wanted it, and he used a loan shark to make sure it happened."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because someone needs to hold this family accountable, and it clearly isn't going to be Dad." Marcus's jaw tightened. "Lily deserves to know the truth. And you deserve to know exactly what kind of man raised you before you decide what kind of man you're going to become."

I stared at the evidence spread across the table, feeling the ground shift beneath everything I thought I understood about my own family, and knew there was no way to unknow this now.

"Why are you really telling me this, Marcus?" I asked, studying my brother's face for the resentment I'd learned to expect from him over the years. "You've never cared about justice for anyone but yourself."

"Maybe I don't, entirely." Marcus's jaw tightened. "But I watched what Dad did to that family, and I watched you almost become just as bad, and something about it finally turned my stomach. Call it a conscience showing up eleven years too late if you want."

"I don't trust you."

"You don't have to trust me. Just look at what's in that folder and decide what kind of man you want to be once you know the truth." Marcus stood, straightening his jacket with the same careless elegance he always carried. "I'll leave the rest of the decision to you, little brother. I always do."

After he left, I sat alone with the documents until the sun came up, reading Robert Morgan's name over and over until it stopped feeling like a stranger's and started feeling like a debt I owed a woman who had never done anything except survive the family that destroyed hers.

I thought about calling Lily immediately, but something stopped me. She deserved to hear this in person, not through a phone call that let me hide from the damage my family's name was about to do to her all over again.

Instead, I called my father's longtime attorney, a man who had drafted contracts for the Hunt family for over thirty years, and asked him quietly whether the old Morgan acquisition files still existed in the archive.

"Why do you want those?" he asked, suspicion evident even through the phone.

"Because I need to know exactly how deep this goes before I decide what to do about it."

He sent the files within the hour, and reading them confirmed everything Marcus had shown me, in my father's own precise, businesslike handwriting. Notes about leverage. Notes about timing the debt collection to coincide with a board vote that needed Robert Morgan's hotel license transferred quietly. Not a single note acknowledging the man on the other end of those decisions as anything other than an obstacle to remove.

I closed the file and pressed my palms against my eyes, understanding for the first time exactly how many people my family had crushed on its way to the top, and how easily I might have become just another generation of the same quiet cruelty if Lily hadn't walked into my life and forced me to finally see it clearly.

Alexander's PovElena arrived at the hospital within the hour, summoned by a call I made with hands still trembling from David's revelation. She looked older suddenly, the weight of years of silence visible in every line of her face as she sat across from David and me in a private consultation room."I need to tell you both something I should have said months ago," she began, twisting her hands in her lap. "I saw something that night. The night everyone's been calling a mistake.""Tell us everything, Elena. Please.""I was doing my final rounds before bed. I saw Mr. Chen in the kitchen around eleven, looking unsteady, holding a glass of water Cassandra had just handed him. She left immediately after, and a few minutes later, I saw him head toward the guest wing instead of his usual office, walking like a man who'd had far too much to drink, though I know now he hadn't been drinking at all."David's jaw tightened. "The guest wing. That's near Lily's room.""I assumed he was simply conf

Not MineAlexander's PovDr. Mitchell closed the door behind her, her voice gentle but direct in the way I imagined she delivered every piece of devastating medical news."Given the complications and the legal questions around your marriage, we ran paternity testing automatically as part of the delivery protocol. I need you both to prepare yourselves for what I'm about to say."Lily's hand tightened around mine. "Just tell us.""Alexander isn't the father." Dr. Mitchell let that settle before continuing. "The results are conclusive. The baby's biological father is David Chen."The room went silent except for the steady beep of hospital monitors. I stared at Dr. Mitchell, certain I'd misheard her."That's impossible," I said. "David wasn't even at the penthouse that night.""I can only report the results, Mr. Hunt. I'd recommend speaking with Mr. Chen directly about the circumstances."Lily's face had gone bone white against the hospital pillow. "I don't understand. I thought it was yo

Alexander's PovThe next four hours blurred into a single unbearable stretch of fluorescent lights and hushed medical voices.Dr. Sarah Mitchell emerged once, briefly, her scrubs stained and her face tight with concentration. "She's stable for now. The baby's heart rate dropped twice, but we've got it steady. I need you all to wait here.""Can I see her?""Not yet. Give us time to make sure she's out of danger first."I sat beside Rachel in the waiting room, my hands shaking in a way I couldn't control no matter how hard I tried."I shouldn't have told her like that," Rachel said quietly, guilt written across every line of her face. "I panicked. I thought she deserved to know before it came out some other way, but I should have waited. I should have found a gentler way.""This isn't your fault, Rachel.""Isn't it? I've spent months protecting her, and the moment it mattered most, I broke her instead."David appeared with coffee none of us touched, sitting heavily beside me. "Any word?

Alexander's PovI liquidated forty million dollars in assets within thirty-six hours, moving faster than I had for any business deal in my entire career.David watched me sign the final transfer with a grim expression. "You realize this puts serious pressure on the company's liquidity right before the shareholder meeting.""Let them worry about liquidity. I'm worried about Sophie getting home safely from school."We arranged the exchange at an abandoned warehouse near the docks, per Vincent's instructions, with two undercover officers David had quietly brought in through a contact from his college roommate, now a detective with the fraud division.Vincent arrived exactly on time, flanked by two men I didn't recognize, his smile as oily as I remembered from Lily's old stories about him."Mr. Hunt. Punctual. I respect that in a man.""The money's confirmed in the account. We're done here.""Almost done." Vincent's eyes glittered with something that made my skin crawl. "You know, I alway

Alexander's PovDavid arrived at my apartment the next evening looking like he hadn't slept in days, a thick folder clutched against his chest."Sit down," he said. "You're going to need to.""Just tell me.""Cassandra Vale isn't her real name. Her birth name is Cassandra Shaw." David let that settle before continuing. "She's Vincent Shaw's niece, Alexander. Placed inside Hunt Corporation five years ago, specifically to work her way into your life and destroy the company from the inside."The room tilted slightly around me. "Why? What does Vincent Shaw have against my family?""Your father, apparently, ruined more than just Robert Morgan over the years. Vincent worked for James decades ago, doing exactly the kind of dirty work that bankrupted Lily's father. James cut him loose eventually, used him up and discarded him without a second thought, the same way he does with everyone." David's expression darkened. "Vincent spent years planning revenge. Placing his niece close to you was the

There's something you need to see, and I've been too afraid to show anyone until now."I drove through the dark with Vincent's threat still burning in my pocket, my mind racing through every possible way to protect Lily and Sophie before dawn.Elena met me in the security office, a small room off the kitchen I hadn't visited in years. She pulled up old footage on the ancient monitor, her hands trembling slightly."I saved this after your grandmother passed. I didn't know what it meant then. I think I do now."The grainy footage showed Cassandra in Margaret's room late at night, carefully measuring something into a small cup beside the water pitcher, checking over her shoulder before slipping out."That's from three weeks before your grandmother's heart failed completely," Elena said quietly. "I compared the dates wi
