The Man He Raised

Alexander's Pov

I confronted my father the next morning, Marcus's folder clutched in my hand like a weapon.

James sat behind his enormous desk, unmoved, as I laid the documents in front of him one by one.

"Explain this."

He barely glanced at the papers. "Robert Morgan was weak. He couldn't manage his own company, and I saw an opportunity. That's business, Alexander."

"You used a loan shark to destroy a man's entire life. He killed himself because of what you did."

"He killed himself because he was too fragile to survive in the real world." James's voice never wavered. "I taught you better than to let sentiment cloud good strategy. Apparently I didn't teach you well enough."

"His daughter is my wife. She's carrying a child, possibly mine, and she grew up in poverty because of what you did to her father."

For the first time, something flickered across James's face, though I couldn't tell if it was surprise or simple irritation at an inconvenient coincidence.

"Then divorce her quietly and move on. This changes nothing."

"It changes everything." My voice shook with a fury I'd spent thirty-two years learning to suppress. "You destroyed her family for money you didn't even need. You made me exactly like you, cold and careless with people's lives, and I am done being that man."

"Careful, son. Sentiment has never built an empire."

"Maybe not," I said, turning toward the door. "But it's the only thing worth having when the empire is already built."

I drove straight to the coastal town, desperate to tell Lily everything before Marcus or anyone else could twist the truth into another weapon against her.

I found her sitting on a bench near the water, one hand resting on her stomach, watching the waves. She didn't run this time, though her whole body tensed when she noticed me approaching.

"There's something you need to know," I said, sitting carefully at the opposite end of the bench. "About your father. About mine."

I told her everything, watching her face crumble piece by piece as each detail landed. Anger. Grief. A kind of exhausted disbelief that seemed to swallow whatever strength she had left.

"He killed my father," she whispered. "Your family killed my father, and then you married me without even knowing."

"I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know."

"Does it matter? The result is the same." She stood, wrapping her arms around herself despite the warm evening air. "I need to be alone right now, Alexander. Please."

I let her walk away again, my chest aching with a helplessness I'd never known before, when my phone buzzed with a message that made my blood run cold.

"Five million dollars, Mr. Hunt. Or your precious pregnant wife and her crippled little sister both learn what happens to people who don't pay their debts. -VS"

**********

Vincent Shaw had resurfaced, and this time, he wasn't threatening someone I'd been too indifferent to protect. He was threatening the two people I now understood I would burn my entire empire down to keep safe.

I called David immediately, reading him the message word for word, my hands unsteady in a way I didn't recognize.

"Don't respond to him yet," David said. "We need to know what we're dealing with before we hand him a single dollar or a single piece of leverage."

"He's threatening Sophie. She's sixteen and in a wheelchair, David. I'm not waiting around while we gather evidence."

"I understand that. But paying him blind only buys you a few months before he comes back for more. We end this properly, or we spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders." David's voice was steady, the voice of reason I'd relied on for over a decade. "Give me forty-eight hours. I already have people looking into Vincent Shaw's finances and connections. There's a pattern here I don't think we've fully seen yet."

I looked out at the dark water beyond my window, thinking of Lily's face when she'd learned the truth about her father, of Sophie's bright, hopeful voice on the phone calls Lily thought I didn't know about, and made myself agree to wait, though every instinct screamed at me to act immediately.

"Forty-eight hours," I said. "Then I do this my way."

David left, and I sat alone in the dark apartment, staring at Vincent's message until the words blurred together. I thought of Sophie's laugh through the phone speaker on nights Lily thought I couldn't hear it through the thin apartment walls I'd started parking outside of, just to know they were safe. I thought of the baby that might carry my blood, growing inside a woman who had already survived more than anyone deserved to.

I drafted a will that night, just in case forty-eight hours turned into something more dangerous than David expected. Every asset I owned, restructured to protect Lily, Sophie, and the child, regardless of paternity, regardless of what happened to me in whatever confrontation was coming.

My father had taught me that money is a leverage, a tool to be wielded coldly against anyone foolish enough to need it. For the first time, I understood money as something else entirely: a shield I could finally hold up in front of people who had never had anyone willing to protect them before.

I fell asleep near dawn with the message still open on my phone, Vincent's threat glowing in the dark like a promise I intended to break with everything I had left.

Alexander's PovElena arrived at the hospital within the hour, summoned by a call I made with hands still trembling from David's revelation. She looked older suddenly, the weight of years of silence visible in every line of her face as she sat across from David and me in a private consultation room."I need to tell you both something I should have said months ago," she began, twisting her hands in her lap. "I saw something that night. The night everyone's been calling a mistake.""Tell us everything, Elena. Please.""I was doing my final rounds before bed. I saw Mr. Chen in the kitchen around eleven, looking unsteady, holding a glass of water Cassandra had just handed him. She left immediately after, and a few minutes later, I saw him head toward the guest wing instead of his usual office, walking like a man who'd had far too much to drink, though I know now he hadn't been drinking at all."David's jaw tightened. "The guest wing. That's near Lily's room.""I assumed he was simply conf

Not MineAlexander's PovDr. Mitchell closed the door behind her, her voice gentle but direct in the way I imagined she delivered every piece of devastating medical news."Given the complications and the legal questions around your marriage, we ran paternity testing automatically as part of the delivery protocol. I need you both to prepare yourselves for what I'm about to say."Lily's hand tightened around mine. "Just tell us.""Alexander isn't the father." Dr. Mitchell let that settle before continuing. "The results are conclusive. The baby's biological father is David Chen."The room went silent except for the steady beep of hospital monitors. I stared at Dr. Mitchell, certain I'd misheard her."That's impossible," I said. "David wasn't even at the penthouse that night.""I can only report the results, Mr. Hunt. I'd recommend speaking with Mr. Chen directly about the circumstances."Lily's face had gone bone white against the hospital pillow. "I don't understand. I thought it was yo

Alexander's PovThe next four hours blurred into a single unbearable stretch of fluorescent lights and hushed medical voices.Dr. Sarah Mitchell emerged once, briefly, her scrubs stained and her face tight with concentration. "She's stable for now. The baby's heart rate dropped twice, but we've got it steady. I need you all to wait here.""Can I see her?""Not yet. Give us time to make sure she's out of danger first."I sat beside Rachel in the waiting room, my hands shaking in a way I couldn't control no matter how hard I tried."I shouldn't have told her like that," Rachel said quietly, guilt written across every line of her face. "I panicked. I thought she deserved to know before it came out some other way, but I should have waited. I should have found a gentler way.""This isn't your fault, Rachel.""Isn't it? I've spent months protecting her, and the moment it mattered most, I broke her instead."David appeared with coffee none of us touched, sitting heavily beside me. "Any word?

Alexander's PovI liquidated forty million dollars in assets within thirty-six hours, moving faster than I had for any business deal in my entire career.David watched me sign the final transfer with a grim expression. "You realize this puts serious pressure on the company's liquidity right before the shareholder meeting.""Let them worry about liquidity. I'm worried about Sophie getting home safely from school."We arranged the exchange at an abandoned warehouse near the docks, per Vincent's instructions, with two undercover officers David had quietly brought in through a contact from his college roommate, now a detective with the fraud division.Vincent arrived exactly on time, flanked by two men I didn't recognize, his smile as oily as I remembered from Lily's old stories about him."Mr. Hunt. Punctual. I respect that in a man.""The money's confirmed in the account. We're done here.""Almost done." Vincent's eyes glittered with something that made my skin crawl. "You know, I alway

Alexander's PovDavid arrived at my apartment the next evening looking like he hadn't slept in days, a thick folder clutched against his chest."Sit down," he said. "You're going to need to.""Just tell me.""Cassandra Vale isn't her real name. Her birth name is Cassandra Shaw." David let that settle before continuing. "She's Vincent Shaw's niece, Alexander. Placed inside Hunt Corporation five years ago, specifically to work her way into your life and destroy the company from the inside."The room tilted slightly around me. "Why? What does Vincent Shaw have against my family?""Your father, apparently, ruined more than just Robert Morgan over the years. Vincent worked for James decades ago, doing exactly the kind of dirty work that bankrupted Lily's father. James cut him loose eventually, used him up and discarded him without a second thought, the same way he does with everyone." David's expression darkened. "Vincent spent years planning revenge. Placing his niece close to you was the

There's something you need to see, and I've been too afraid to show anyone until now."I drove through the dark with Vincent's threat still burning in my pocket, my mind racing through every possible way to protect Lily and Sophie before dawn.Elena met me in the security office, a small room off the kitchen I hadn't visited in years. She pulled up old footage on the ancient monitor, her hands trembling slightly."I saved this after your grandmother passed. I didn't know what it meant then. I think I do now."The grainy footage showed Cassandra in Margaret's room late at night, carefully measuring something into a small cup beside the water pitcher, checking over her shoulder before slipping out."That's from three weeks before your grandmother's heart failed completely," Elena said quietly.
