Clara's POV

Waking up felt like dragging myself up from the bottom of a deep, dark swimming pool, fighting for air that wouldn't come while heavy weights dragged me down into the mud.

First came the heat—thick, dry, and heavy, wrapping around my skin like a woolen blanket, completely unlike the chilly, crisp Canadian air I was used to breathing. Then came the faint, ghostly sound of wind chimes and low voices speaking a rhythmic, unfamiliar language echoing beyond a heavy piece of carved wood. Finally, my eyes cracked open to bright, blinding golden sunlight streaming through delicate linen curtains, falling across a massive, luxurious bed piled high with soft down pillows that swallowed me whole.

I bolted upright, gasping for breath, my head pounding like a bass drum against my skull with every beat of my racing pulse.

I was still wearing the exact same clothes from the sedan—my favorite gray sweater and black slacks, now wrinkled, dusty, and smelling faintly of chemicals. My phone, my purse, my shoes, the hidden flash drive with my life's work—everything was completely gone, stripped away while I was unconscious. A crystal pitcher of ice water sat on the mahogany nightstand, condensation beading down its sides, but I didn't trust it one bit. Who knew what else had been slipped into liquids in my presence?

I swung my legs over the edge of the mattress, my bare feet touching cool, polished wood. To my absolute surprise, the bedroom door wasn't locked. It turned easily under my trembling hand. I pushed it open a fraction of an inch, squinting against the bright light, and peeked out into a long, sunlit hallway lined with rich dark wood paneling and expensive oil paintings that looked museum-ready.

A woman in a crisp white apron walked past carrying a silver breakfast tray piled with fresh fruit and warm pastries. She stopped, turned, and gave me a warm, motherly smile that felt completely out of place in a nightmare.

"Ah, you're awake," she said cheerfully, her voice bright and breezy, as if I had just popped over for morning tea instead of being dragged halfway across the world in a drugged haze. "Let me get something for you."

"Where am I?" I croaked, my throat feeling like sandpaper, my voice shaking so badly I barely recognized it.

"You are in the Hargrove Estate," The maid said smoothly, taking a step closer, her expression polite, calm, and entirely unreadable.

The name hit me like a physical blow. Hargrove. The same name from the silver-embossed leather folder on the desk in Las Vegas. The same name that had haunted my nightmares for three long weeks.

A hot spark of pure, unadulterated anger flared in my chest, burning away the lingering dizziness of the chloroform. For eight hundred and twelve days at my miserable job, I had been pushed around, bossed, and managed by people who thought they owned me. I had let David and Brianna steal my work, I had let the bills crush me, and I had spent weeks running in terror from a shadow. But right now, locked in a gilded cage with no way out, terror melted into white-hot fury. I wasn't going to take it anymore.

I shoved past the maid, ignoring her startled gasp, and stormed down the hallway, my bare feet silent on the polished hardwood floor.

The corridor opened up into a giant, vaulted gallery filled with rows of heavy oil portraits framed in massive gold leaf. I walked past them, my breath hitching in my throat as I looked up at the stern, unsmiling faces of people who clearly owned half the world—generations of Hargroves staring down with cold, calculating eyes.

Then I froze dead in my tracks. My breath caught, and my heart slammed violently against my ribs.

Right in front of me hung a massive portrait, dominating the entire wall. Dark, messy hair falling across a broad forehead. A sharp, unforgiving jawline carved from pure shadow and arrogance. Piercing dark eyes that seemed to follow me across the room, carrying that exact same dangerous, predatory intelligence I had tried so hard to forget.

A shiny brass plate mounted at the bottom of the frame read a single name: LUCIEN HARGROVE.

The floor tilted violently beneath my feet, the gallery spinning around me in a blur of gold and dark wood. Every terrifying piece of the puzzle slammed together all at once with deafening clarity: the VIP club where Brianna had dragged me, the corporate folders on the desk, the black sedan parked outside my office, and the stranger in the Las Vegas penthouse whose face I hadn't been allowed to see clearly in the dark.

It wasn't a random hookup. It was him.

Heavy, confident, deliberate footsteps echoed down the wooden floorboards behind me, breaking the silence of the gallery.

I whipped around, my breath trapped in my lungs, just as a tall figure stepped out from the archway and blocked my only path of escape. He wore an unbuttoned linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing strong, sun-bronzed skin and the faint outline of a scar along his wrist. He looked every bit like an owner of the world, completely at home in his fortress.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The air between us went dead silent. His dark eyes locked onto mine, widening with sudden, absolute, unshakeable recognition. The arrogant mask slipped for a fraction of a second, replaced by a raw, hungry shock that mirrored my own.

And I saw his face clearly in the bright morning light—the Las Vegas man.

He didn't smile. He didn't speak. Instead, his gaze dropped slowly, deliberately, from my eyes down to the loose cotton of my sweater, resting there for a long, agonizing heartbeat before snapping back up to meet my terrified stare. The trap hadn't just closed; it had locked permanently.

Lucien Hargrove took one slow, deliberate step toward me, closing the distance between us like a predator stepping into a clearing.

Clara's POVThe two men at the door didn't move. For several seconds, nobody in the room seemed to remember how to breathe, and the silence felt heavier than the hospital air around us. One of them stepped inside first, his dark suit perfectly pressed, while the other remained near the doorway and quietly closed the door behind him. Their eyes moved across the room before settling on Lucien, and the moment they recognized him, their expressions became even more formal.“Mr. Hargrove,” the older man said, his voice calm and professional. Lucien's face hardened as he looked at him. “Yes?” he replied, his tone carrying the same controlled authority he used in the boardroom. The man reached inside his jacket and pulled out his identification.“I'm Agent Miller with the Federal Financial Crimes Division, and this is Agent Brooks,” he said. “We're here regarding the ongoing investigation into Hargrove Capital and the financial transactions already under review.” Lucien didn't look surprised

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Six: Lucien's Second Girlfriend?

Clara's POV“This is all Sarah's doing.”Eleanor's words hung between us like smoke in a closed room, heavy and impossible to wave away. I thought to myself; I would do the same if I was in her shoes. I stared at her, and I wondered why a mother would behave like this. She knew Sarah was Licien's girlfriend and Lucien brought another pregnant woman in, which she accepted without questions. That acceptance had seemed odd to me from the beginning, but I had been too afraid, too confused, and too tangled in my own situation to ask her why. Looking at her face now, I see that her expression has changed. This is seriously bad, I looked at her and I saw her hands were shaking. The trembling was small at first, just a faint flutter in her fingers, but it grew until the phone in her grip rattled against her palm. This couldn't be because of the article, this had to be something more, as she continued to stare at her phone. Her eyes did not blink. Her breathing had changed, becoming shallow an

Lucien’s POV“Am I really a prisoner, Lucien?”Clara’s question followed me out of her hospital room.It stayed with me in the hallway, in the elevator, and even after the doors opened onto the private floor of the hospital. Am I really a prisoner?I had wanted to tell her she was wrong.I wanted to tell her that every guard outside her door, every locked gate at the estate, every rule I had placed around her life existed because I was trying to keep her alive. But the truth was harder to swallow.Protection could begin to look a lot like captivity when the person being protected had never been given a choice.I reached the end of the corridor before my phone rang.Marcus.“Where are you?” he asked.“Hospital.”“Emergency conference. Now.”I stopped walking.“How bad?”There was a pause.“Bad enough that the board is already waiting.”I ended the call.By the time I entered the conference room, twenty-three people were seated around the long table. Their faces were carefully blank, bu

  • HIS ONE NIGHT MISTAKE   Chapter Thirty Four: Sarah's Doing

Clara's POV The door closed behind Lucien, leaving the room so quiet that I could hear the monitor beside my bed ticking through every second of my silence. I stared at the door. Why did he walk away like that? I was only telling the truth. I am a prisoner here, and this pregnancy is just adding to it. It is making the cage smaller, heavier, and more impossible to ignore. Every day I stay in that estate, I lose another piece of the life I had before. And he walked away as if I had said something cruel, something un real, when all I had done was to put it to him again the reality of my situation. Then my baby kicked. I did not really know if it was a kick at first. It was small, strange, like a flutter doesn't belong to me. But then it repeated, and I felt a little pressure in my abdomen, a force that made me hold my lower belly. Baby, I said softly, mummy doesn’t want to leave Daddy, but mummy has a life outside of here. Daddy won’t even allow mummy to go and see Grandma

Clara's POVThe first thing I felt was pressure against my fingers.Someone was holding my hand.I tried to move, but my body felt heavy, as if I had been asleep for weeks instead of hours. My throat was dry, my head throbbed, and a strange beeping sound kept repeating somewhere beside me.“Clara?”The voice sounded far away.I forced my eyes open. The ceiling above me was white. A clear tube ran beneath my nose, and a monitor flashed green numbers beside the bed. I turned my head slowly and found Eleanor sitting next to me, her hair loose around her shoulders and her hand wrapped tightly around mine. Her eyes widened when she saw me looking at her.“Oh, thank God.”I tried to speak.Nothing came out.Eleanor reached for the glass on the table and held a straw to my lips.“Small sip.”The water felt cold against my throat.I swallowed once, then again.“Where am I?”“The hospital.”I closed my eyes.Memory returned in pieces. The stairs. The warmth between my legs. The blood.Lucien r
