"Happy Sixth Birthday, Mia!" Everyone in the room chorused as Amelia and I guided Mia to bring the knife down onto the cake.

Claps, cheers, and laughter filled the air, making my heart swell with enthusiasm for the successful birthday party underway. I did this. Okay, Amelia might have also helped. But she mostly helped doll up Mia.

I took a peek at the birthday girl, who stood beside me. She's cladded in an azure ball gown adorned with pink floral patterns. Her hair was styled in soft waves that cascaded down to her shoulders, and a radiant smile spread across her face as she glanced from Amelia to me.

"Happy birthday, baby," I wished her again, lowering myself to plant a kiss on her forehead. Gosh, Mia looked so beautiful. I couldn't still believe it's her sixth birthday. Damn, my girl's growing really fast.

Mia's grin widened. "Thank you, Mommy," she replied before wrapping her arms around me in a hug. I patted her hair affectionately and smiled down at her in return.

—SIX MONTHS LATER—"It's really great to see you again, Kristine, and once again, I apologize for how poorly we treated you in the past," Melissa said across the dining table, her eyes imploring and gentle. She continued, "If I had known that you were the woman who would soon bear my grandchild, believe me, I would have treated you with much more respect. But that’s not the sole reason for my apology. I am asking for your forgiveness because I am genuinely remorseful. You have every right to be upset with this family after what we did to you." After what YOU did to me. But I didn’t say anything. After all, we had reconciled, and I had already confronted her two days ago when Sebastian brought us to Clasold City."It’s not a problem, Melissa," I replied with a half-smile, taking a few sips of my wine while glancing at Sebastian, who was sitting beside me at the large dining table. Mia was perched on his lap, refusing to let anyone else hold her because she was unfamiliar with them

~KRISTINE~The pristine white ceiling stared down at me as I squinted, still half-conscious. The smell of disinfectant, medical equipment, and sterile air infiltrated my nostrils. Yet, among those scents, one stood out. Just one.The unmistakable scent of vanilla—and my child's presence. My senses immediately registered the scent of this person, and I winced as I struggled to get up."Kris, are you awake?" A familiar voice broke through the haze.A shudder ran through me as I felt the warmth of a familiar touch. But I remained still, afraid that this familiarity might not be enough. There was someone I had been waiting for— the only person who could break my cycle of suffering.Just as I was about to surrender back into unconsciousness, I heard the tiny voice I had been longing for all day—the entire time I had been out."Mommy?" The voice floated into my ears, and my brain instantly registered it.Then came her touch, sending shivers down my spine and awakening nerve endings in it

"What do you want, Lydia?" I demanded, just after hanging up with my daughter.Hearing Mia's voice had soothed my worries, but her assurance that she was safe and not being mistreated by Lydia eased my heart even more.It allowed me to stay patient and calm, granting Lydia the privilege of my listening ear instead of pushing me to fucking pursue her and put her behind bars for this crime. She had a demand and she wanted them met before she told me where I could get back Mia."Just two things, Sebastian," Lydia said imploringly, and my jaw clenched as I awaited her ultimate request."State them," I replied curtly.Lydia started, "There's a woman who's been after me. She holds my secret—a secret that could ruin everything I've built over the years. She's not going to give up; she has me at her mercy. Even though I already did a favor for her, she still holds this over my head and she knows I would do anything to buy her keep her silence."I listened intently, looking forward to where th

~SEBASTIAN~"Hey, how is she?" I bombarded the doctor frantically as he approached us from the hallway of City Hospital, where Chris and I had been waiting anxiously for his report.I swallowed hard as my gaze met with his.The elderly man clad in a pristine white lab coat stopped before me and forced a reassuring smile. "Mr. Weston, your wife is going to be okay. But I'm afraid she's still unconscious."My patience flared. "For how long? It's been 72 hours already. You told me she'd be awake within the last two days."He shrugged, wearing a remorseful expression that made me want to knock it off his face if he didn’t do something about Kristine's condition.I was losing it!Three days! Fucking Seventy-two hours, Four thousand three hundred twenty minutes and counting! That’s how long it’s been since Kristine collapsed—more like fainted on me after realizing our daughter was missing.Someone took her from the bridal shop she had visited with Amelia three days ago. That person bett

"Mia, where's your Aunty?" I asked my toddler as I brushed past her to grab a bottle of water from the fridge.Mia, who was finishing her breakfast at the counter, replied eagerly, "Aunt Amelia said she'd be out soon. She's still getting ready.""Okay," I responded, my head shoved in the fridge.Retrieving the bottle, I closed the door and beckoned to Mia. "Finish your meal, baby. I'll be right back."She nodded, and I left the kitchen, heading toward Amelia's room, and trying to keep my mind busy with other thoughts so I wouldn't be reminded of what happened two nights ago.Halting by Amelia's bedroom, I knocked gently on her door."Come in," her voice prompted me to push the door open.I stepped into her room and closed the door behind me, my eyes finding her at the dressing table. Her back was turned as she applied makeup before the mirror.I walked over to her slowly, my heart racing with calm trepidation, knowing she would inevitably bring up the one conversation I desperately wa

"I'm honestly baffled, Amelia," I said, studying the images closely. "I just don't understand.""Do you think Sabrina might be lying?" Amelia asked cautiously."About what?""This woman.""I don't think so. Why would she lie? She's been completely honest with me from the beginning, and I believe her. If she says she's found out they're plotting against me, I should put my doubts aside and start planning my next move.""Great choice," Amelia pointed out. "So, what do you want me to do about this Elizabeth Jones?"I exhaled deeply, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over me. "Do your thing, Amelia. Just find out what you can about her. I want to know who she really is and why she's after me."Amelia gently pulled her computer from my view, nodding eagerly. "You got it."As she typed fervently on the keyboard, her eyes sharp and focused on the screen, I remained still, pondering what Sabrina had told me—especially about Dave.Despite my wish to doubt her and dismiss her claims, I knew she
