On the day of our engagement, Caesar Greco brings the wrong ring. The one he's supposed to give me is a ruby ring engraved with the family crest. Instead, he slips a silver band onto my finger, the gift that comes with a necklace he bought a few days earlier. His eyes stay fixed on my sister, Anna Benedetti, in the audience. Barely paying attention to me, he answers, "I grabbed the wrong one by mistake. The audience sits so far away. Who's going to notice?" "By mistake" is something I've heard far too many times. On our date, he books tickets to a symphony concert Anna likes instead of the opera I've wanted to see by mistake. On our vacation, he brings the wrong passport by mistake. He and Anna board the plane while I am still stuck back home. At a dinner party, he sends my invitation to Anna by mistake. The next day's headlines are filled with photos of them arriving together, announcing to the world that she's the Don's wife instead of me. Every time, Caesar dismisses it with the same careless excuse. "It was just a mistake. Every day, I'm dealing with arms shipments and checking on the family's casinos. I have to watch my back in case someone tries to kill me. Why can't you cut me some slack over something this trivial?" I've made a point of putting the ring in a custom jewelry box and setting it in the most conspicuous spot on the table, right beside the pistol he never goes anywhere without. Somehow, he still picks up the wrong one. I follow his gaze to Anna. That's when I notice the ruby ring on her left ring finger, its facets blazing under the lights. Caesar steps in front of me, blocking my view, his tone impatient. "It's just a ceremony. Let's get through it. I have something important to get to." That so-called important thing is that Anna has found a newly opened boutique and wanted him to go with her to check it out. I slip the ring off my finger and hold it out to him. "Since I'm clearly never on the top of your list, you should save your time for the person who is."

Chapter 1

Emery's P.O.V

Nobody said that being a vampire wasn't easy.  I thought to myself as I sat on a rock overlooking the lake. My now changed hair which was a flame colored red blew gently in the wind. It was dark and the sun was just setting in the horizon and the stars began peaking behind dark grey clouds. At this hour vampires began to stir. Getting ready for the night ahead of them. I miss being human. I thought as I heard three familiar voices from behind me. I turned and saw Nora, Blake, and Marcus approaching me but I ignored them and continued to stare off into the distance. Nora and Blake were the ones that found me on the highway that night. Injured and on the verge of death. If it wasn't for Marcus...My thoughts trailed off as I snapped back to reality as I sighed. I was grateful to all three of them..but being like this....a vampire that has to have some control...wasn't and was my choice....

I was turned last week. Due to a car accident that just happened. I was headed home for the night from work and some guy decided to run me over and into a ditch causing me to have glass shards all throughout my body and a pole buried into my side, puncturing my one of my intestines and a bleeding head. I had lost a lot of blood that night and as I said before if wasn't for Nora or Blake being there at the right time I would of been dead.

A hand came down gently onto my shoulder, which caused me to look up at him with a questioning look. "How are you feeling?" he asked with slight concern. "I completely understand that being what we are can raise some questions." His short dark hair hung loose on his forehead and my fingers itched to brush it aside to see his beautiful eyes which were a gold color, a very unusual one at that, but I didn't care. They were beautiful all the same but I didn't move an inch.

I looked at him and then gave him a slight smile. "I pretty much know what I am doing." I answered him. "At least as far as aging, speed, strength, and sight." I took a calm breath and continued. "Except..." My voice trailed off as I pondered the question. I felt Marcus' gaze on me as if waiting for me to ask any questions that seemed to be on my mind. "Never mind...I think I got the gist."

Marcus arched an eyebrow but didn't say anything. He turned to Nora and Blake and asked "I think it's time we hunt." I found myself groaning softly to myself. Does he really need to use that term? I thought to myself as I got to my own two feet looking at Marcus, Nora and Blake who was focused intently on their surroundings. Gosh, I really need to get better at this because I got eternity to figure out what my new found life can offer. The thought crossed my mind but I ignored it.

I found myself saying, "I honestly don't know focus on my surroundings like any of you do." I took another breath and asked. "How do you do it?"

I heard Nora giggle softly. "It's only fair since you are rather new at this," she started as she twirled her silver like hair between her fingers. "Mind as well give you a few lessons."

"No sense in leaving you in the dark." Blake said as well. "After all eternity awaits us." He gave a grin and said. "We will start our lessons tomorrow night when the night is still young." I only nodded my response as I brushed strands of my own light brown hair our of my eyes.

"Let's go." I heard Marcus' voice say. "We need to get going before the more dangerous predators come out." I didn't need any more encouraged. I raced off into the forest, already feeling the hunger pangs hit me hard in the stomach, but it wasn't for the normal food that I once craved, it was for blood. The other three right behind me.
