LOGINThe lights in the apartment were bright against the dark of night. Nathan carried Ashley's bag inside and set it on the table. She held her laptop under her arm as she walked towards the couch. She sank into the cushions and opened the laptop. It cast an even, soft glow across her features.
"So," she said, looking up at him. "About the counteragent. I think I have figured something out."Nathan sat down opposite her and leaned forward on his knees. "What?"Ashley swiveled the laptop so he could see. Rows of graphs shifted next to her notes on the screen. "The aerosol stays effective because the particles can hang in the air for hours. If I change the weight of the suspension, even just a little, it falls apart faster. The molecule I tested binds to the carrier. It drags it down. Instead of floating and drifting, it falls in less than fifteen minutes." She looked up, nervous and excited. "It's not perfecShe slowly nodding, "Yes. The same paramedic whose name you asked about earlier."Jake gripped the papers tightly in his hand. "Can you scan these and send them to me?"The nurse left the room after agreeing to do so.Jake sat back in his chair, rubbing his forehead. "If this person has Nathan's blood, and someone wants to use it for testing purposes, it will definitely match. Even if Nathan had nothing to do with Kimberly."A twist formed inside of him. This meant someone had created a perfect lie.Jake whispered to himself, "But why."He decided to look into Kimberly's phone records next. He called a fri
Jake said, "Yeah." "Yeah" was all Jake could say."Give him a little more time," Jake suggested softly. "He's killing himself trying to get everything figured out."Ashley didn't respond. She just listened to Jake's breathing through the phone."I'm gonna go back to the hospital that did the DNA testing," Jake continued. "Something smells fishy about the dates that Kimberly gave us. If there is something wrong, I'll find it."Ashley fell silent for a moment before saying, "Thanks."After ending the call, Ashley leaned back against the pillow, her hand moving again over her stomach, slowly and gently."Plea
After a lengthy pause, Ashley whispered softly into Mia's shoulder, and she felt new tears fall. "I had the ultrasound picture in my purse. I was beyond excited. I could envision how his face would light up when he found out. I was ready to tell everyone. I thought we were making progress as a couple. And then everything unraveled."Mia embraced Ashley tightly once again. "Ashley, you are not alone. I am going to stay with you. Together, we will work this out. You and the baby will not walk this path by yourself. I promise you that."Ashley rested against Mia, feeling the exhaustion, the devastation, and the gratitude for the warmth of someone who cared for her without asking anything in return. They stood there for a very long time, wrapped in the silence of each other'
As she pulled out of the driveway, Ashley clutched the steering wheel. The light of the house disappeared behind her, however the phrases she heard that night echoed in her mind. The air around the car was cold; it was colder than she had ever experienced it before and she couldn't understand how her life had turned upside-down in an instant. As she continued to drive, Ashley's breathes were unsteady. The road was smooth and silent before her, yet the ideas in her head were boisterous. Each blink brought the image of Nathan staring at her with such seriousness in his eyes. She envisioned the young child hanging onto Kimberly. She remembered the way the household staff avoided eye contact with her; as though they knew things prior to her.She attempted to swallow her sorrow, but her throat seemed too tight to swallow.
Grandfather's eyes widened in shock. He blinked, clearly taken aback by the question. He cleared his throat and then began to answer, "Well, that will depend on many things, Matthew."Matthew nodded as if that made perfect sense and then turned to Nathan, "Dad, please, I want to stay here with you tonight. Mom can read me stories. We can stay here and be a family."Ashley felt her breath catch. She quickly glanced down because she was afraid that the emotional expression on her face would reveal everything.Kimberly then reached over and stroked her son's hair. "Matthew, your father lives with his wife now, sweetheart. We cannot just move in.""But why?" Matthew asked. "I do not want to go home. I want to stay with
"That sounds like a plan, especially since you are pregnant. You should rest instead of worrying about work." He continuedAshley smiled, placing a hand on her stomach absently. "You sound just like Mia already.""Well then maybe you should listen to both of us," Jamie laughed. "Go home, get some sleep, let someone else save the world for a little while.""I will do my best," Ashley replied, laughing lightly. "Take care of yourself, Jamie.""You too, Ash," Jamie said when the call ended. With her peace restored, Ashley shut off the light in her study and gathered her things. She was ready to leave and head to the Ford residence.
