Chapter 2

Author: Gilded Riches
After terminating our mate bond, I left the capital—Ethan's domain.

He had no room in his world for me, and even less for my family.

While I was still undergoing treatment for silver poisoning, he stripped my family—Wilson House—of all its lands. We were bankrupt overnight.

My father had opposed my mate bond to Ethan from the start. But I insisted. I was the one who begged to be his mate.

On the day of our wedding, my father was so furious he locked away his wolf, collapsing and requiring ongoing care from a healer.

My mother didn't fare much better. When Ethan retaliated against us, the shock was so great she swallowed silver to end it all. She's been in a coma ever since.

After everything, I had just enough money left to continue their treatments. But my brother Kevin—drunk, addicted to gambling—burned through all of it in a single night.

He owed money everywhere. People came knocking every day.

I tried to cut him off. I really did.

Then one day, he stormed into my mother's hospital room with a silver dagger in hand. "Sis, give me money or I'll kill them both. Don't think I won't!"

Because I loved Ethan. Because I insisted on being his mate. I'd already hurt my parents enough. I couldn't let them die too.

I had no choice but to take the fastest way out.

Back in the VIP room, everyone turned toward Ethan after I finished speaking.

His jaw clenched, and he looked away.

"She's filthy," he said. "I'm not interested."

Laughter filled the room.

"Ethan, maybe you haven't heard—Joy's got a reputation for knowing how to please a man."

Someone leaned in, pretending to whisper, but made sure we all heard. "They say she can't have kids. So you can do whatever you want."

More laughter.

"That so? Now I'm even more intrigued." Jason raised a brow and pulled me into his lap. His hand gripped my chin, his lips coming down to meet mine.

But before he could kiss me, Ethan yanked him back violently by the collar.

Jason nearly choked. Even so, he didn't dare retaliate.

"Ethan?" he said, voice trembling with false cheer. "Something wrong?"

Ethan stared him down. "Just realized. She does look a little familiar."

Jason blinked, confused. "You want her now? But…"

Ethan raised his eyes to meet Jason's.

The force in his gaze made Jason flinch.

"Of course," Jason stammered. "If you want her, I wouldn't dare keep her."

He loosened his hold on me.

But I moved first, reached up and wrapped my arms tighter around Jason.

Ethan's face darkened instantly. "You don't want to come with me? Is this what you've become—so desperate to sell yourself?"

My heart shattered, but I held onto the act, smiling like it didn't kill me.

"That's right," I said. "I like it this way. Born dirty, not worthy of walking beside you. Go find someone better."

Jason laughed and lifted me up. "Can't help it, Ethan. Who could say no to such an enthusiastic beauty?"

Ethan smiled back, but it was cold as death. "Be my guest. She's too filthy for me."

That word—"filthy"—slashed through me like a silver blade.

Again. And again.

But I'd gotten used to it by now.

Rumors said Jason was rough and violent. I braced myself for the worst. But that night, just as he began, he got a call—something urgent in his pack—and left without a word.

I ended up alone in the hotel room and slept through the night.

In my dreams, I felt someone standing over me, watching, burning me alive with their gaze.

But when I woke up, I was alone.

The next morning, just as I stepped out of the hotel, Kevin ambushed me.

"Sis! Give me money! If you don't, they'll kill me! I know you've got cash! You just spent the night with a guy!"

He lunged for my bag, dumping everything onto the sidewalk.

When he found nothing, he grabbed at my clothes right there in the open.

I shoved him off. He came at me again. I slapped him hard across the face.

"That money's for Mom and Dad!"

He screamed and charged. His hand was mid-swing when someone kicked him away.

"You looking to die?"

I looked up.

Ethan. He was dressed in luxury, radiating power.

Kevin's eyes lit up. He ran over, clutching Ethan's leg. "My dear brother-in-law! I knew you still cared about Joy! Please, give me money or they'll kill me!"

Ethan didn't react. He just turned to me.

Kevin pulled me over, shoving me in front of Ethan. "Look! It's my sister! Your mate! The Luna of your past!"

He turned to me, desperate. "Joy! Beg him! Tell him you're sorry! He'll help!"

…Luna?

The word hit me like a silver strike to the chest.

My knees gave out.

Kevin kept tugging on me, shouting, begging. I fell to the ground in front of Ethan.

He frowned and crouched down, gripping my chin. His eyes were a storm—rage and something else buried deep.

"I gave you enough money when we broke off our mate bond," he said, low and cold. "And yet you're out here selling yourself? You enjoy this? Joy, name your price. Whatever you want—just say it, and I'll pay."

My heart bled. But I smiled through the pain, eyes full of tears.

"Ethan," I said. "I'd rather earn my money dirty than ever beg you again."

After leaving Ethan, I went alone to St. Maria Hospital. I made quiet arrangements for my parents to be transferred.I was guiding my mother carefully down the corridor when fate played one of its cruel tricks. At the turn ahead, a familiar figure sent a jolt of cold through my veins.Ethan leaned casually against the wall, a lit cigar between his fingers, its smoke curling around him like a warning. His gaze locked on mine, coiling like a serpent. His voice came low, cold. "Where are you off to, my dear Joy?"My mother, seeing him, reacted like a lioness provoked. She struggled to stand, her voice ragged with fury. "Go away! You monster! Our lives are none of your business!""How much more do you want to ruin us? Get lost!" she spat. "Joy, why are you still tangled up with this devil?!""Mom, it's not what you think—" I stammered, desperate to explain. But Ethan remained composed, calmly crushed the cigar underfoot, and disappeared down the hallway.Moments later, he returned

Ethan rushed to me and scooped me into his arms. His warm breath brushed against my ear."Joy, are you okay?"I shook my head on instinct. But when I looked up, I met Jason's sharp and amused gaze. His eyes roamed over me, savoring every inch of my body without shame. That's when it finally clicked. He had planned it all.Taking me away, planting the hidden cameras—everything had been part of a calculated trap to blackmail Ethan, to use me as leverage."Ethan, no need to get so worked up," Jason said, sauntering over with a grin, phone in hand. The screen glowed cold blue, casting shadows across his face. "I'll delete the footage. Right after you hand over exclusive rights to the Moonlight Valley hunting grounds.""Get out." Ethan's voice carried enough threat to chill bones.Just then, his assistant burst in with several men. Jason let out a dry, humorless laugh. As he stepped out, he turned back with a smirk. "Your woman looked real sexy in that footage. Imagine if it ever

The Ethan I used to know was always untouchable—aloof and cold, like a mountain wolf watching the world from above. For years, I stood by his side, but never once did I feel warmth from him. Emotions rarely surfaced. As an Alpha werewolf, pride and dominance came naturally to him, forming an impenetrable barrier between us.In all the time I knew him, I only saw him show tenderness a few times—and those were always for Sarah.Between us, it was always me chasing, me compromising, me trying to earn his approval.I believed his heart was permanently frozen, and just as I was about to give up, he changed—suddenly, inexplicably. He started inviting me to dinner, sending me rare moonstone necklaces. But what shocked me most was that, on the night of a full moon, the Moon Goddess chose me as his lifelong mate.I was ecstatic. I never once stopped to wonder why the change, why the sudden affection.Turns out, I was just too naive. So naive that I destroyed my family. After our downfa

Ethan arrived with a fleet of yachts, each one packed with his most trusted men. He had come prepared—more prepared than I ever expected."The sea breeze is sharp," he said softly. "Come inside and change into something warm."Before I could answer, he was already guiding me into the warmth of the cabin. A clean set of clothes was delivered promptly. The crew left without a word."Why aren't you changing?" he asked a moment later, his voice unnervingly gentle. "Don't like them? Or do you not feel cold?"I stood still, staring at him. "What exactly do you mean by all this?"A flicker crossed his face, something unreadable, but he didn't answer."Just change," he said quietly.I didn't move. "No need. Wouldn't want to dirty your yacht—or your clothes."Ethan let out a quiet sigh. "Joy, don't talk to me like that."He stepped closer. "I know everything now. Kevin lost all the money gambling. Don't worry—I'll make him pay for it."He took my hand. His grip was gentle, but there w

His woman? He couldn't be talking about me. We'd severed our mate bond five years ago.Five years—that was long enough to strip a person clean of pride, of dignity. Long enough to forget titles that used to mean something.Daughter of the Wilson House. Luna of the Duskrend pack. All of that... gone. The family I once wore like armor, the man I once trusted with my life—both had vanished from my world.Ethan strode in, flanked by his men, an imposing force that made everyone on deck freeze. The moment his eyes found me, they sharpened like blades. He came straight toward me, shedding his coat mid-stride, and wrapped it around my soaked body. There was urgency in him. Worry. Maybe even guilt."I'm sorry, Joy. I was late," he said, breath tight. But I'd never expected him to come. So I hadn't waited. I hadn't had even a flicker of hope.Any hope I once had for him had already been crushed beneath the weight of his repeated vengeance.Jason recovered first, stepping forward. "Et

As Jason pulled me onto the ship, I couldn't hide the unease in my voice. "Jason, are you serious about this? You swore—you said you'd save my parents."He chuckled, the kind of low, lecherous laugh that never meant anything good. "Of course. Don't you trust me? Who else can you rely on now? Come with me for a few days, and when we're back, your dad will be good as new."I didn't trust him. Not entirely. But for my father... I had no other choice.Once on board, someone blindfolded me. I couldn't see a thing—only the roar of sea wind filled my ears as we moved further out. Jason ordered someone to hand me a drink. I took a few sips, then everything went dark.By the time I woke up, we were already in international waters. The deck buzzed with noise. The party had already started.Turned out, I wasn't the only woman on board. The others were all dressed to be looked at—tight dresses, bare skin, glasses of liquor in hand, laughing and cozying up to men whose faces I recognized.
