Chapter 2

Author: Winter
Back at my Tribeca penthouse, I pulled two brown leather cases from the storage room. I didn’t need much: my passport, several changes of clothes, the watch my grandmother had left me, and the old seal my father had placed in my hand before he died.

I left the wedding guest list, the sample place settings, and the leather-bound book of vows where they were.

It was after one when the lock finally clicked.

Adrian walked in alone.

He stopped the second he saw the suitcases.

For the first time that night, the confidence slipped from his face.

“Where are you going?”

I zipped the second case. “Milan.”

“Elena.”

There was something different in his voice now. Not irritation. Fear.

His grip loosened, and his other hand came up to my face.

“Don’t do this.”

For one dangerous second, he looked almost like the Adrian I had loved—the man who used to pull me against him after every fight because he couldn’t stand going to sleep with distance between us.

He bent his head toward me.

I turned my face away.

He froze.

I had never done that before.

His eyes searched mine. “You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

A flash of panic crossed his face.

Then, almost as quickly, pride covered it.

“You’re angry. Fine. Be angry.” His thumb brushed my wrist before he let me go. “But you’re not ending three years over what happened tonight.”

“I’m not ending it over tonight.”

His jaw tightened.

“I’m ending it because tonight finally made me understand the other three years.”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You trusted me yesterday. You were in my bed last night. Now you’re standing here pretending everything between us suddenly means nothing?”

“It means enough that what you did hurts.”

“You don’t get to humiliate me and then use the fact that I loved you as proof I have to stay.”

Before he could answer, the front door opened again.

Luca walked in carrying champagne. Sabrina followed with a large seafood platter balanced in both hands.

“There you are.” Sabrina smiled too brightly. “We figured everyone needed to calm down.”

Luca took one look at Adrian’s face, then at my luggage.

“Oh, come on.”

Sabrina set everything on the kitchen island. “We came to salvage the night. Eat something, have a drink, and by tomorrow no one will even remember.”

Lobster and oysters filled the center of the platter.

I had a severe shellfish allergy.

Beside it sat a neat package of gluten-free crackers because Sabrina had recently decided wheat made her feel bloated.

Adrian had remembered a preference she’d mentioned once.

He had forgotten I’d carried an epinephrine injector for four years.

“Help yourselves.”

I reached for my suitcase.

Luca laughed. “Here we go again. You used to threaten to run back to Italy every time we fought. You always came home the next day.”

“This time’s different.”

Adrian’s eyes stayed on me.

“She says she’s canceling the wedding.”

For once, Luca stopped smiling.

Sabrina blinked. “Over the cake?”

“It’s not about the cake.”

“Then it’s the bet,” Adrian said. He dragged a hand over his jaw. “I know it didn’t start well, but the last three years were real. You don’t get to rewrite our whole relationship because you were embarrassed tonight.”

“Because the last three years were real, you don’t get to dismiss tonight as a joke.”

For once, he had nothing ready to throw back at me.

Luca poured himself champagne and leaned against the island. “You’re exhausted. The wedding’s close. You’re taking everything personally.”

“And you’re punishing Adrian for one bad call,” Sabrina added softly. “Just apologize for what you said to me at the party, and we can all move on.”

I looked from one face to the next.

“You came into my home, brought food that could put me in an emergency room, and somehow I’m still the person who owes an apology.”

Adrian’s gaze dropped to the seafood platter.

For half a second, shame crossed his face.

Luca gave a dismissive snort.“No one is asking you to eat it,Stop turning every mistake into proof that we don’t care about you.”

It was the same trick in a different suit.

If I named the pattern, I was twisting things.

If I stayed quiet, they called it proof nothing was wrong.

Sabrina’s eyes immediately filled.

“This is my fault. I shouldn’t have mentioned the bet or let everyone egg him on. If it matters that much to you, I’m sorry.”

She reached for the insulated container she had brought with the food.

“I brought soup too. At least have something warm before you go.”

“I’m not hungry.”

I bent to close my suitcase.

Sabrina stepped closer. The container slipped from her hands, and scalding broth spilled across the side of my blouse.

I cried out and stumbled back. Heat burned across my waist almost immediately.

“Oh my God.” Sabrina covered her mouth. “Elena, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.”

Adrian grabbed a towel while Luca pulled Sabrina away from the spill.

“It was an accident,” Luca said. “Don’t start another fight over this.”

Sabrina looked at me with wet eyes.

“I was only trying to take care of you.”

One year later, the Genoa waterfront project opened to the public. The century-old brick walls of the warehouses had been preserved, while the seaward side had been replaced with sheets of glass. Harbor lights came alive along the coast as the press filmed me cutting the ribbon. My mother stood behind the crowd and raised her glass from a distance. She had never needed a stage to remind anyone who held the room. The project outperformed our first-year projections, and the board voted to place me in charge of Vitale Holdings’ next round of North American investments. When I returned to New York, it wasn’t for any man.At the opening press conference, a reporter asked whether the scandal surrounding my canceled wedding had inspired the project’s focus on public space. A year earlier, I would have smiled and changed the subject to protect everyone else.“No,” I said. “The project existed before the engagement ended. I’m simply done shelving my work for people who treat my loyalty like an

After the board suspended him, Adrian moved out of his West Village townhouse. The company-owned property, cars, and club memberships went into the restructuring. By the time he left, everything he still owned fit into a few boxes. While packing, he found a navy leather portfolio. Inside was the first European route plan I’d prepared for him and a pair of silver cuff links engraved with our wedding date. The inscription on the back read:[Wherever we go, we’re on the same team.]He sat on the floor for a long time. My messages to him used to be paragraphs: storm warnings, client preferences, board schedules, reminders about his mother’s medical appointments. Over the years, they had gotten shorter. The last one had arrived before the engagement party.[If they make me the joke again tonight, will you stand with me?]He’d been drinking with Luca and sent back one line.[Don’t create a problem before anything happens.]Adrian closed his eyes. When the lawsuit reached discovery, investigators recovered the group chat in full. From the college fundraiser video to the bedroom proposal stunt and the engagement cake, every joke had left a trail.Sabrina came up with the ideas. Luca turned them into games their entire circle could join. Adrian stayed quiet—or joined in—whenever he had the power to stop them. The messages from the night of our engagement party were especially clear.[Sabrina: What if she loses it in front of everyone?][Luca: She won’t risk the wedding.][Adrian: Don’t take it too far. She’s been under a lot of pressure.]Five minutes later, Luca had needled him.[Luca: Don’t tell me she’s already got you whipped.]Adrian had replied with a thumbs-down emoji. There were hundreds more. A week later, Calloway Harbor Group held an emergency board meeting. Bank representatives, investors, and independent directors filled both sides of the table. No one made small talk, and no one saved the head chair for Adrian.Marcus Reed, the board’s longest-serving director, pushed a file toward him.“Six years ago, this company was weeks from liquidation. Vitale Holdings guaranteed the first rescue facility.”Adrian looked up sharply.“Vitale Holdings?”Marcus stared at him. “You really didn’t know?”Adrian said nothing.Marcus pushed a second file across the table.“Four years ago, when the European routes were hemorrhaging money, Elena gave you the Vitale family’s priority berths in Genoa.”The third document was a client list. Marcus tapped it with one finger. “Seventeen of your twenty largest accounts came through her introductions. What exactly made you believe the business would keep running after she left?”Adrian’s hand tightened on the arm of his chair. “I never asked her

Mamma took me straight to the airport. By the time Adrian realized I wasn’t going back to the penthouse, my flight to Milan had already taken off.Adrian arrived at the airport anyway. He called me dozens of times...Adrian waited outside the airport until sunrise. He called me dozens of times and had his assistant contact private aviation companies to track my itinerary. He only stopped after Valentina warned him that continued surveillance could be treated as harassment.By the time he returned to Tribeca, the penthouse’s electronic lock had been changed. The building manager handed him a cardboard box. “Ms. Vitale revoked your guest access. These are the personal effects she left for you.”Inside were his shaving kit, several shirts, a spare car key, and the unfinished book of wedding vows.He stood in the hallway without moving. The first time he’d stayed over three years earlier, I’d cleared half the closet for him. He’d joked that he didn’t own enough to justify all that space. B

Luca looked down at me.“Two hours should be enough to teach you a lesson. Apologize to Sabrina, and we’ll call it even.”My lips were still numb from the cold, and my teeth chattered when I tried to answer.Sabrina stepped forward and slipped her arm through mine.“Luca, Adrian, stop. Elena didn’t mean any of this.”Then she turned to me with a soft smile.“We’re still best friends, right?”Before I could pull away, Sabrina slipped one arm around me and deliberately pressed her fingers into the fresh burn beneath my blouse.I cried out and shoved her away on instinct.Sabrina cried out and stumbled backward. Her eyes filled at once.“Elena, you still can’t forgive me?”Luca’s face hardened.“What the hell is wrong with you?”“She pressed on my burn.”“I didn’t,” Sabrina said quickly. “I was trying to help her.”Luca shoved me back.“Elena, how long are you going to keep this up?”My lower back hit the wall, right where the burn had already blistered. My breath caught, and my knees nea
