Chapter 2

Author: Asteria
Even though ridiculous things had happened far too often, I still couldn't contain my shock.

This ring was a diamond piece Edoardo had personally flown to France for. He spent six months collaborating with an elusive, genius designer just to create it.

When Edoardo placed this ring on my finger, he had smiled and pointed to the engraving inside, "As You Wish," and told me, "Valentina, this is my promise to you. Your wish is my command."

Yet now, a solemn vow once given to me was so casually handed off to another woman.

Seeing me silent, Edoardo chuckled and ruffled my hair.

"Don't look at me like that. She's just wearing it for a couple of days. You'll get it back on the wedding day."

I raised my head, looked at the man I had loved for seven years, and smiled softly. "Keep it."

"What?" Edoardo asked.

"I said keep it," I said.

I didn't want the ring anymore.

And I didn't want this fiancé anymore either.

Edoardo's brows furrowed, as if he wanted to say something.

The next second, the front door clicked open.

"Val! I brought your favorite chocolate cake!"

Ambra walked in swaggering as if she owned the place. She flashed me a playful wink, then turned around to punch Edoardo's shoulder. "I'm thirsty now. Hand me your glass and pour me some wine!"

Edoardo gave her a helpless look. "What is your problem? Why do you always take mine when we have guest glasses?"

Despite his complaining tone, he still pulled his half-drunk wine out of the fridge, poured it for her, and slid his own glass toward her, his movements so practiced they seemed second nature.

I stood to the side, watching in silence.

Edoardo was a neat freak who never let anyone touch his personal items. Even I wasn't allowed to use his glass, let alone share a sip from the same one.

Yet Ambra was always the exception.

I had thrown a fit about this once, but Edoardo had simply said, "Ambra and I grew up together. We're just used to it."

It was a lie.

Sure, they had known each other since childhood, but only because their fathers had business dealings. Ambra herself had told me that during a slumber party.

When I first met Ambra as my college roommate, we didn't exactly get along. We both came from Italy, but our personalities clashed. Yet when I was falsely accused of plagiarizing a paper, she was the one who stepped forward with evidence to clear my name. From then on, we told each other everything, and she was even the one who introduced me to Edoardo.

When we graduated, Ambra's father ran into trouble, and her family business collapsed overnight. By then, Edoardo and I had returned to Italy to discuss marriage. I was the one who suggested taking her in at the estate, and Ambra had even wept in my arms out of gratitude.

I never imagined that from then on, the boundaries between them would vanish, they grew closer and closer, and I was pushed further and further outside.

"Valentina," Ambra's tentative voice broke through my thoughts. "You're not mad I'm wearing this, right?"

She waved her left hand. The ring caught the light, gleaming coldly. Her smile was soft, but I didn't miss the fleeting triumph in her eyes.

I curled my lips into a slight smile. "Why would I be? It's just a ring. Honestly, even if you wanted my man, he's yours."

The smile on her face froze instantly. A flash of guilt crossed her features, and her eyes quickly welled up with tears.

"Val, that's not fair..." She bit her lip, looking at Edoardo with a hurt expression. "I just thought it was pretty and wanted to keep it safe for you for a few days."

Edoardo was already stepping in front of her, shielding her behind his back. His voice turned icy.

"Valentina, that's way out of line. Apologize to Ambra."

I sneered internally.

He demanded an apology over a piece of truth. Yet they had made a mockery of my wedding, my ring, and my dignity time and time again without ever saying a single apology.

Ignoring them both, I turned around, dragged out my suitcase, and started packing.

Edoardo finally seemed to realize something was off. "What are you doing?"

"Leaving. We're done. You two can have the wedding." I zipped up the suitcase and stood up.

"Valentina, wait..." Edoardo's breath hitched. He stared at me intently, about to speak, when Ambra stepped up and grabbed my arm. "Val, stop it! Why do you always use breaking up to scare him? I'll give the ring back, okay?"

"Don't bother." I pulled my arm back.

Edoardo held her back. The sudden panic in his eyes vanished, replaced by that familiar, arrogant confidence.

"Valentina, grow up. You're not a teenager anymore. Why do you always have to make a scene?" He stared at me coldly. "Are you really just going to walk away? Didn't you promise your mom she'd see you walk down the aisle?"

  • He Bet on My Wedding, so I Bet on My Groom   Chapter 11

I thought Edoardo would finally give up after making such a scene, but I underestimated his stubborn delusion. He rented a small house near the route I took to work every day, clearly intending to dig in for the long haul. When I refused to meet him, he had breakfast delivered to my office reception desk.Sometimes it was fresh coffee and pastries; other times, a massive bouquet of flowers. He had transformed back into the man who had pursued me years ago. patient, passionate, and willing to spend endless effort just to make me smile.Too bad I was no longer that naive girl who could be swayed by cheap grand gestures. The things that used to soften my heart now brought nothing to my eyes but utter exhaustion. When my father eventually caught wind of it, it took less than twenty-four hours for Edoardo's rented house to be completely cleared out.I assumed that was the final chapter.Until one drizzly evening, as I stepped out of the office building, I caught sight of him standing by the

Edoardo's face drained of all color, his lips trembling violently."All... all of those games were Ambra's idea! I genuinely thought it didn't matter...""I thought you two were best friends... I thought you wouldn't mind...""I swear I was just playing around! I had no malicious intent, Valentina. I never wanted to hurt you! I love you!"Watching him throw Ambra under the bus at a moment like this only made me feel an overwhelming wave of disgust. At this point, I couldn't care less who tricked whom.Whatever Ambra had done, or how much Edoardo had known, meant absolutely nothing to me anymore. Yet he still refused to let go."So you're saying Ambra forced your hand, and you were just a helpless victim?""Grow up, Edoardo. When you make your bed, you lie in it. It takes two to tango, and neither of you is innocent."I had the butler bring me my phone and played him the video Ambra had sent me."If this is what you call love, then it only makes me sick."After seeing that video, his bo

Edoardo's chest heaved violently as his eyes swept past the stunned crowd, locking straight onto me. He stood rooted to the spot, pale as a ghost."Valentina..."His voice was so hoarse it was almost unrecognizable. The moment he took two frantic steps forward, hundreds of cold, black gun barrels leveled straight at his chest from every corner of the nave. The cathedral, thrown into turmoil just seconds ago, fell dead silent.A deep, imposing voice cut through the silence like ice."Where did this arrogant brat come from? Who gave you permission to raise hell on my domain?"My father, shielding my mother behind him, was entirely stripped of his earlier warmth, leaving only lethal authority.Edoardo frowned, his knuckles white. "Who are you?"Before the last word left his mouth, a bodyguard stepped up and delivered a crackling blow across his face.Edoardo's head snapped violently to the side, blood instantly trickling from his split lip.He jerked his head back up, eyes wide with fury.

Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, bathing us in a mosaic of vivid color.I held tight to my father's arm, stepping down the aisle to the rhythm of the organ.Though white touched his temples, he still carried that formidable, unyielding aura, the kind that held an entire room in quiet awe.Noticing my gaze, he glanced down and murmured, "Nervous?""A little," I said.A faint smile touched his lips as his grip on my arm tightened reassuringly."Don't be. Papa is right beside you."A wave of warmth hit my nose, bringing a sudden sting to my eyes. The day my mother and I stepped off the plane, a fleet of black sedans was already waiting on the tarmac, with my father at the head of the line to greet us.When he laid out the files kept carefully over twenty years, the truth that had once broken my mother's heart was finally brought to light.Back then, his mother, my grandmother, refused to accept a woman of ordinary birth.Knowing her son was hopelessly in love, she spun

As Edoardo stood absorbing his parents' fury, remorse coiled around his heart like suffocating vines.Years ago, he had loved Valentina so deeply. He was willing to do whatever it took to protect her, and he had painstakingly planned every detail of this wedding. When did everything start to change?Ambra turned to the Don and coaxed, "Please don't blame him for what Valentina did today. She's been very emotional lately, Edoardo did nothing wrong..."She reached out to touch Edoardo's shoulder, but he took a step back, dodging her grip.Ambra's hand froze mid-air, the ring on her finger glittering glaringly under the light, the exact wedding ring he had personally pulled off Valentina's hand.It was as if Edoardo had been struck by lightning. Everything he had once taken for granted suddenly clicked together, forming a picture so painfully clear.Ever since Ambra's family fell on hard times, he was the one who gave her money, arranged housing, and allowed her to intrude into their live

The church at Lake Como was still decorated for the wedding according to plan.Guests arrived from far and wide, black sedans pulling up one after another along the estate drive. Men in sharp black tuxedos and women dripping in jewels were ushered inside by bodyguards. It was the grandest wedding the Marino family had seen in years.Yet with just ten minutes left before the ceremony was set to begin, the bride was nowhere to be found."She's still not here?" Edoardo glanced down at his watch. The butler kept his head low. "We can't get through to Signorina Valentina's phone, Underboss. We sent men to her room, but it was empty."An ominous feeling washed over Edoardo.Suddenly, his phone buzzed with a message from an anonymous number, complete with an attached photo. With just one glance, his eyes widened in utter disbelief. In the picture, Valentina stood by the sea in the vintage-style wedding dress she loved, while a handsome man gently adjusted her wind-blown veil, his eyes filled
