Chapter 4

Author: A.Nostos
Dante and I set the wedding for next Saturday.

Dante's men roughed Nico up. By the time they brought him back to the estate, he had to be carried upstairs.

My father had a doctor tend to his wounds, then locked him in a holding cell.

Leah pleaded with my father on Nico's behalf, but he threw her out of his study. Afterward, she posted on social media.

"I guess even surviving life and death together doesn't guarantee a happy ending.

"As long as he's safe, I'll wait as long as it takes."

I hit like.

In the study, Dante and my father were working out how to divide up the territory.

Handing back territory and redistributing it was just a show of good faith. The real reason my father agreed was the Vitale family's offer to collaborate on new trafficking routes.

"The docks stay separate," my father said, tapping the map. "We can partner on the new warehouse business, but I'm sending my own people in."

Dante leaned back in his chair.

"Fine. But I'll be in charge of the records for all incoming and outgoing shipments."

My father narrowed his eyes. After a long moment, he nodded.

As we left the study, my father asked me to stay behind.

"Camila, are you sure about this?"

He frowned, his white hair bright under the lamp.

"Business is business. But when it comes to marriage, I want you to follow your heart."

I patted my father's hand and glanced back at Dante, who was waiting at the end of the hall.

He was speaking to his men with a stern expression, but the moment he sensed me watching, he smiled.

I smiled too.

"Dad, your daughter would never settle for less than she deserves."

My father sighed and held my hand for a long time.

"The Moretti family will always have your back."

Two days before the wedding, I had just finished trying on my veil. I was heading downstairs to find my father when Leah stopped me at the top of the stairs, a lunch basket in her hand.

"Ms. Moretti, I need to talk to you."

I looked down at her and waited.

Leah forced a smile.

"I heard you're getting married in two days..."

She looked down, her fingers tightening nervously around the lunch basket.

"I'm hoping you'll forgive Nico. After everything he's done for the family over the past three years, please don't hold this against him.

"Let him out, Ms. Moretti. Please..."

I was about to answer when she suddenly set down the basket and pulled a knife from her sleeve.

My guards stepped up at once.

But Leah didn't come at me. She pressed the blade to her own wrist.

"I'd rather you just took my life. At least then he wouldn't be torn, and you wouldn't hate him..."

Her voice trembled as a thin line of blood appeared beneath the blade.

I laughed in her face.

"Leah, what exactly are you trying to accomplish with this little stunt in my home?"

I slowly came down two steps and stopped right in front of her.

"Nico's locked up, so there's no point putting on this little act. Unless you're hoping someone will see you and think I drove you to kill yourself?"

Her lips trembled. "That's not it... I just don't want to come between you..."

I took the knife right out of her hand and tossed it on the floor.

"Leah, if you're really that kindhearted, you don't need to kill yourself. Just leave.

"You think a little blood will make Nico feel sorry for you while ruining my reputation? Nice try, but that won't work on me."

Her face went white, then red, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

Suddenly, hurried footsteps came from upstairs.

Somehow, Nico had escaped from the holding cell. He looked disheveled, but the moment he spotted the blood on Leah's wrist, his expression changed. He rushed down the stairs, pulled her behind him, and glared at me.

"Camila! What did you do to her?"

Leah cried as she tried to explain. "It's not Ms. Moretti's fault. I did it to myself... I came to beg her for your sake..."

Nico pulled Leah closer behind him. "Camila, if you've got a problem, take it out on me! I'm the one who wronged you. Leah was only worried about me. Why are you treating her like this?"

I was no longer in the mood to joke around. My expression turned cold.

"I haven't even asked how you got out, and you have the nerve to question me?"

That hit a nerve, and his bluster deflated at once.

I kept going. "You're the one who broke our engagement. You're the one who brought her back to humiliate me. You know full well you wronged me, yet the moment she starts crying, you accuse me without even asking what happened?"

I didn't wait for an answer. I turned to the guards.

"Take him back to the holding cell. Find out who was on duty. And show Ms. Cruz out."

The guards stepped in at once and took them away separately.

I walked straight downstairs and ignored the shouting and crying behind me.

On the day of the wedding, the hall was full of the most important people from both families.

Dante stood at the end of the aisle in a black tux, a white rose matching my bouquet pinned to his lapel. The gold pin securing it bore the Moretti and Vitale family crests side by side.

His smiling eyes never left me, and when my father put my hand in his, he leaned down and kissed my forehead.

"Too late to change your mind now, Ms. Moretti."

I hooked my finger around his.

"I'm expecting great things from you."

He laced his fingers through mine, the smile deepening in his eyes.

But the officiant had barely started speaking when a gunshot rang out outside the hall!

The music stopped dead.

The guards rushed toward the entrance as the guests leaped to their feet, screaming.

The side door of the hall burst open.

Nico stood there with a ring of explosives strapped around his waist.

He stared at our joined hands, then raised a gun and pointed it at Dante.

"Camila, if you don't want this wedding to turn into a funeral..."

His voice was raw.

"Come with me!"

I laced my fingers through Dante's, our wedding rings pressed together."But why didn't you ever tell me?"Dante laughed softly and said nothing. He only answered after I kept pushing."I was afraid you'd think I only proposed to repay you..."Camila, I proposed because I love you. And I wanted you to be with me because you love me too."He lowered his eyes. "Do you know how scared I was every time I saw Nico chasing after you? I was scared you'd only said yes to me to get back at him. I was scared you'd forgive him again."My heart ached a little.Dante always seemed so calm and in control. He almost never opened up like this.He was the Don of the Vitale family, but he was also that boy outside the church. After all those years, he'd still been watching over me, quietly waiting for his chance to get close.I moved closer and nestled into his arms.Dante was warmer than the cashmere blanket, and the warmth made the tips of my ears turn pink."Dante, I'm so glad I called you that day.

Dante stood there smiling and held out his hand to me.He slid the wedding band onto my finger and lifted my veil.Soft light from the stained glass fell across his face, and I rose on my toes and kissed him first.Applause broke out. Smiling, he tightened his arm around my waist and deepened the kiss, slow and tender.Married life was peaceful and happy. Every morning before he left, Dante would linger by the front door forever, trying to coax a kiss out of me.His men waiting outside could only look at the ground and pretend they hadn't seen a thing.I couldn't resist teasing him. "Mr. Vitale, what happened to the fearsome Don everyone knows?"He leaned close to my ear and murmured, "Camila, if you keep smiling like that, I won't want to leave today."Whenever I returned to the estate for dinner with my father, Dante joined us if his schedule allowed. They got along fine as long as they didn't talk business. "Don't listen to her!"Blood was still seeping from Nico's mouth. "Camila, you don't owe me anything. Don't give in to her for my sake!"Leah pressed the gun harder against his head. "Who said you could speak?"I took two steps closer and spoke calmly. "Don't you want to negotiate with my father? Put the gun down, and I'll call him.""You don't get to make deals right now!" she snapped. "Kneel!"Before I could move, Dante's voice came through the earpiece I'd put in before I left."Camila, we're coming in!"The next second, the side door of the warehouse burst open, and Dante charged in with his men!Leah instinctively turned toward the noise. I seized the opportunity to lunge at her and knock her gun hand aside. The gun went off, and a package on a nearby shelf burst open. She screamed and tried to aim the gun at me, but Dante was already there. He wrested it from her hand and slammed her to the floor. My father's men quickly subdued the others, securing the warehouse."Let me go! I'm

Nico and Leah had vanished together. My father's men searched everywhere but found no trace of them. Dante grew increasingly busy, too.But he always made time to take me shopping, take me to dinner, and plan little surprises for me.Our days together were warm and easy, like any normal couple's.But as long as Nico and Leah remained missing, I couldn't shake the feeling that danger was lurking in the dark.So the wedding kept getting pushed back.Dante kept telling me everything would be fine, but I knew he was desperate to get married as soon as possible. His men quietly complained to me about how impatient their Don had become.I teased him. "Mr. Vitale, what happened to that famous composure of yours?"He kissed my fingertips. "I can't wait to make you my wife, Mrs. Vitale."But time did nothing to ease my anxiety. I couldn't forget the danger we'd faced on our wedding day. Then one afternoon, I got a call from a number I didn't know."Ms. Moretti, please, you have to save Nico!"I

I frowned at Nico."Who told you that?""Leah! She overheard the Vitale family's plan. They're planning to use the wedding to take out your entire family in one fell swoop!"Nico struggled to inch forward."Camila, I came to save you! Leah was even willing to put our relationship aside for now so I could come find you—"My father cut him off, his voice low. "She's the one who got you out of the holding cell?"Nico froze, then gave a reluctant nod.My father's expression darkened further. With a wave of his hand, he ordered the guards to take Nico away. The wedding had to be put on hold, and the whole fiasco left everyone in a foul mood.Dante took my hand, his expression solemn. "Camila, I swear to God, the Vitale family has no plan against you. Believe me."I ran my thumb over the back of his hand and smiled at him."I know. If Nico were right, you'd have made your move by now."Dante's tense expression gradually softened.Something flickered in his eyes, as though he wanted to say mo

Nico raised the detonator. Even with the guards' guns trained on him, nobody dared move.My father's expression darkened. "Put the gun down! Do you have any idea who's sitting in this room?""All I want is Camila!"Nico stared at me with red eyes, his chest heaving."If she comes with me, I won't hurt anyone!"Dante stepped in front of me, his voice terrifyingly cold."You showed up at her wedding strapped with explosives, and you expect me to believe you care about her safety?"Nico clenched his jaw, the gun shaking in his hand.I looked at Nico over Dante's shoulder."You want to talk? Fine. But let the guests leave first.""Come here first!" Nico's face was frantic.I sighed, stepped out from behind Dante, and faced Nico's gun head-on.Nico faltered and slowly lowered the gun."Nico, we all know how much you've done for this family over the years. I don't want you to throw your future away."I walked slowly toward him.Dante and my father called out to me anxiously from behind, but
