Chapter 3

Autor: Helen
To shore up her children's claim before the Mafia Council convened, Bianca moved the twins' christening forward.

On the day of the ceremony, Matteo, dressed in a tailored black suit, bent over Leo to fasten a silver christening medallion around his neck.

"Bella, come help me with the clasp." Matteo did not even look up, his tone as natural as if they were still a devoted married couple. "This is the Moretti family's blessing on the next generation. It's their legacy."

Isabella walked forward stiffly. When her eyes landed on that silver medallion, every drop of blood in her body seemed to drain away at once.

An iris pattern had been engraved so faintly around the edge of the silver medallion that it was almost invisible. No one else would have known it, but how could she possibly be wrong? Her mother, Elena Moretti, had commissioned it three years earlier, full of hope, when Isabella was pregnant! The back even bore the pet name for Isabella's unborn child, a name only she and Elena had known!

And now the token meant for her poor unborn child hung brazenly around Leo's neck!

Isabella's fingers shook hard. She stared at Matteo, her heart squeezed by an invisible hand until the pain made it almost impossible to breathe. But she did not take it out on the innocent child. She forced down the taste of blood rising in her throat and turned to Matteo.

"Where did that medallion come from?" Her voice was ice.

Matteo frowned, plainly displeased with her tone. "Bianca found it in a box of family keepsakes. It's a Moretti heirloom. What's wrong with letting the children wear it? Isabella, can't you be bigger than this? Stop looking at a child that way. You're jealous, and it shows!"

Jealous?

Inside, Isabella laughed bitterly. He actually thought she was jealous!

The ceremony began, and outside the church a deafening gun salute went off.

"Bang! Bang!"

The sound pierced Isabella's eardrums. The cell, the beatings, the terror of a bullet grazing her scalp swallowed her whole. Her face went white, and for one instant her mind went blank.

Standing beside Isabella, Bianca's eyes flashed with malice. She deliberately let go and shoved Leo in the back, sending him pitching toward the bottom of the high marble stairs!

"Ah!" Bianca's scream tore through the hall and pulled every eye toward her.

At the last possible second, Isabella lunged forward on instinct and caught Leo against her wounded shoulder, shielding his head before it could strike the stone.

Pain tore through the old wound. Isabella made a low, choked sound as cold sweat soaked the back of her dress. She fought through the pain, steadied the crying boy, and then, before several hundred guests, pulled the silver medallion from his neck.

"That medallion belongs to me. This child has no right to wear it." She clenched it in her sweat-slick palm, her back perfectly straight, her gaze cutting across Matteo and Bianca like a blade.

The hall erupted.

"Miss Moretti disappears for three years, then comes back this vicious?"

"Exactly. She can't even stand the sight of an innocent child. Snatching a christening medallion in public? Disgraceful!"

Accusations and abuse rolled over her in waves. Matteo's face was livid, and the look he gave her was full of disappointment and disgust.

Isabella did not offer a word of explanation. She simply turned away, cold and composed, leaving every contemptuous stare behind her.

Back in the guest room, Isabella locked the door and removed her coat. Her hands shook as she used scissors to pick open the lining and drew out a creased, yellowed medical report: the record of her miscarriage, which she had somehow managed to keep hidden throughout her captivity.

The date on it was September, exactly three years ago.

Julian Meyer, an attorney specializing in transnational crime, pushed open the door. The only ally she trusted now, he took the bloodstained report and the silver medallion from her.

"I've already looked into it." Julian's expression was grim, and his eyes betrayed how much her pain affected him. "This medallion was listed on the manifest of a distress package you sent out three years ago. The strange part is that the package was never logged in any De Luca receiving or dispatch record. Not once."

Isabella's head snapped up, her eyes bloodshot.

If her plea for help had never been logged, how had one of its tokens ended up in Bianca's hands? Three years ago, who had intercepted the distress package she had nearly died sending out and deliberately cut off her only lifeline?!

One year later. The Palermo high court handed down its final judgment on the mafia case that had shocked all of Europe.Bianca was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap, first-degree murder, large-scale money laundering, and federal witness intimidation. She would spend the rest of her life in one of the harshest maximum-security prisons at the foot of the Alps, in endless isolation and madness.Matteo De Luca was convicted of concealing his decision to terminate the rescue, unlawful imprisonment, ordering Isabella confined in cold storage, breaching the neutral line to provoke law enforcement, and witness coercion. Because he surrendered the key in time to stop the explosion and gave a full confession, the court sentenced him to fifteen years. Before beginning his sentence, he publicly renounced the De Luca name and its bloody legacy. The Moretti port, once shrouded in gloom, had been transformed. No crest of Mafia pow

Camila's terrified shout had barely faded when the encrypted transmitter at Julian's side began flashing wildly. The command center delivered terrifying news: the port handover had left a brief gap in security, and the last large evacuation ship carrying relocated witnesses had departed Marseille twenty minutes earlier and already reached deep water!Aboard were Anna's family, the elderly ship's doctor Vincenzo, and dozens of women and children long protected by the Safe Passage Program. Bianca's remaining diehard gunmen had already infiltrated the crew in sailors' uniforms. They had also planted high explosives in the refrigerated hold on the lowest deck, wired to a remote scuttling valve set to open automatically in forty-five minutes! This was more than revenge. It was a massacre meant to destroy everything Isabella believed in.Matteo heard the commotion from his temporary holding cell. When his lawyer told him Bianca had triggered the destruction code, he lunged at the bars, his e

The vast medieval courthouse in Palermo lay under a silence so severe it was hard to breathe. The air smelled of old wood and law books. Every gallery seat was filled, and hundreds of eyes fixed on the center of the courtroom. At the final hearing, Bianca arrived in a long black dress fit for mourning and brought her young twins, Leo and Clara, to the witness stand. Before a wall of cameras, she delivered the performance of her life, accusing Isabella through tears. "Your Honor! This woman wanted control of the port so badly that she was willing to destroy these innocent children's father! She's a dangerous lunatic! At the christening, she tore a keepsake from a child's neck. During the Council blackout, she even tried to carry off my son by force! There is no line she won't cross!"The courtroom erupted, whispers rolling through the gallery like surf. Bianca was weaponizing motherhood as an unbreakable shield.Under that vicious appeal for public sympathy, Isabella sat composed at the

Twenty-four hours into the freeze order, tension inside the Marseille office had become oppressive. Armed federal officers patrolled outside the windows. Inside, not a sound broke the silence.Federal Commissioner Smith sat at the head of the conference table and dropped a thick stack of documents before him. "Ms. Moretti, since you present yourselves as a legitimate witness-protection network, the Safe Passage Program must provide incontrovertible evidence before the deadline that the key witnesses in your care, including former casino accountant Anna, former ship's doctor Vincenzo, and the underage courier Camila, are all here of their own free will. We must confirm that their testimony was not secured through incentives or violent coercion."At the worst possible moment, Matteo, stripped of his command and under house arrest, made a reckless and potentially fatal move in secret.Anna still refused to sign the final sworn statement, fearing reprisals from Bianca's remaining people. The captivity footage seized from the refrigerated barge not only shattered the last of Matteo's dignity and self-certainty; it also opened an unexpected path into the darkest part of the past.In the dim safe house, Luca replayed the grainy footage filled with screams more than a dozen times. His clouded eyes stayed fixed on a blurred figure at the edge of the frame before he jabbed the pause button. The image froze on a man dropping bloodied gauze into a basin. He wore a hood, but the index finger of his left hand was missing a joint, and as he handed over the instruments, he swore from habit in a distinctly Sicilian dialect."That's Vincenzo Caruso..." Luca's voice shook with excitement. "Vincenzo, the former medic aboard the Moretti family's armed smuggling vessels. He left the life two years ago, claiming severe rheumatism, and he's been hiding in the Sicilian countryside ever since!"Following that thread, Isabella immediately activated the most covert intelligence network the Sa

One crisis followed another. While preparing to move Anna, Nora walked into an ambush by Bianca's men on the edge of the port district and was abducted.Bianca left behind a bomb wired to a two-hour countdown and a demand: the original ledger and Camila in exchange for Nora's life.Meanwhile, Matteo used the old casino security network to learn that Nora was being held on a refrigerated barge moored at an abandoned dock. The exclusion order kept him away, so he rushed the coordinates to port police and shouted into the phone, nearly frantic, "Bella! Wait for the police! That's a refrigerated ship. You cannot go into another cold room. Not ever!"Isabella glanced at the tide table and said flatly, "That barge will reach open water in forty minutes. By the time the police arrive, there will be nothing left but a body."She handed Julian a certified copy of the paper ledger, packed an empty box as a decoy, and mobilized several of the cooperative's port tugs to stage a massive safety-insp
