Chapter 5

Autor: Helen
Inside the sealed transport van bound for the psychiatric clinic, Isabella made her move.

Isabella knew the van's layout inside and out. With a tiny metal tool she had concealed, she severed the cabin's main control line, triggering a brief but total system blackout. During the ten seconds the guards spent scrambling to restore power, she leaped from the compartment and vanished into the rain and mud.

She did not care that she was soaked through. She went straight for the abandoned warehouse where her parents had died in that horrific crash.

The warehouse stank of rust and rot. Beneath a beam that looked ready to collapse, Isabella found Luca on the floor. The old guard had been shot in the abdomen, and blood seeped steadily from the wound, staining the dust around him red. Her father's old wooden rosary was clamped in his fist.

"Miss Isabella... the evidence..." Luca's words broke apart between breaths.

Isabella's eyes were bloodshot. She twisted open the rosary's largest bead and found a miniature encrypted audio chip inside. Without hesitation, she pulled out a handheld terminal and transmitted the raw data directly to Julian in real time for remote backup.

Backup progress: 100%

The instant the screen lit up, the warehouse door was kicked in, and blinding flashlight beams locked onto Isabella.

"Don't move! Put it down!" Bianca filed in with her men at her heels, shrieking. "Matteo, look at her! She attacked a guard and escaped, stole the family's core ledgers and secrets, and met with a traitor!"

Matteo came forward slowly from behind the crowd.

His gaze settled on Isabella's blood-covered hands, stained from where she had pressed on Luca's wound.

Matteo's eyes were terrifyingly cold. "Isabella. Hand it over."

"Matteo, call an ambulance! Luca is dying!" Isabella's voice was raw, her plea almost desperate. "I'll explain everything, but we have to save him first!"

"Explain?" Bianca cut in, her voice venomous. "Matteo, Luca was bought by a rival family long ago. Tonight he planned to sell the Moretti port's most guarded secrets! Isabella is helping him destroy the evidence!"

Matteo looked from the armed Luca on the floor to Isabella's blood-soaked hands, and the last trace of trust vanished from his eyes. With the Mafia Council only days away, he would not allow a scandal exposing a power struggle within the family.

"Take Luca into custody." Matteo looked away, his voice merciless. "As for Isabella... take her to cold storage number three at the docks. Let her cool down in there for a while."

Cold storage number three was kept at zero degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

Matteo knew perfectly well that during her three years in captivity, Isabella had spent long stretches in a freezing, damp basement cell. He knew the trauma had left her terrified of the cold to her very bones!

He chose that punishment anyway. No one knew better where to hurt her.

The moment the door closed, brutal cold engulfed Isabella. Her heart clenched violently with the trauma response, and she struggled to breathe.

"Matteo! Open the door! Matteo!"

For the first few minutes, she pounded and clawed at the steel door on instinct until her fingers were battered bloody. She could hear Matteo standing right outside, but he never once gave the order to open the door.

Isabella's hand slid slowly down the steel door. She stopped calling for help. The last trace of warmth in her eyes died, replaced by cold, absolute resolve.

Shaking violently, she made herself move. She stripped off her soaked outer layer, used the metal clip from her hair to rip the temperature sensor line off the wall and short out the thermostat, then dragged over a heavy rack and forced open the vent of the maintenance duct. She crawled into the next compartment, unlocked the latch from the other side, and got the unconscious, badly wounded Luca out and away. Then she went back into the cold room.

By the time Matteo shoved open the cold-storage door nearly an hour later, panic had broken through his composure. Isabella lay curled beside the freezing vent, her face white as paper, her breathing shallow, a thin layer of frost coating her body.

"Bella!" Matteo's eyes flew wide. Abandoning all restraint, he rushed to her and pulled her into his arms, stripping off his coat and wrapping it tightly around her frozen body. "God, how could it have been this long? I'm sorry... Bella, open your eyes!"

He shouted her name again and again as he carried her, barely alive, at a run all the way to the hospital.

Late that night, in a private suite at an exclusive hospital.

While Matteo was called away on urgent Council business, Isabella slowly regained consciousness in the silent room. Every bone in her body hurt as if it had been crushed, but her eyes had gone unnaturally cold.

Isabella struggled to pull out the transmitter and open an encrypted channel to Julian.

"Julian. The Moretti neutral asset trust... activate it now." Her voice was raw, but every word was final.

"Isabella! You're awake. How are you?" Julian's voice came through urgently, then turned grave. "My people picked Luca up and got him out. And I've decrypted a portion of the audio from the chip in your father's rosary... You need to brace yourself."

The audio file came across and played quietly in the dim room.

It was a radio recording from three years ago.

"Don, the kidnappers are asking whether the second ransom payment should be sent on schedule. The Donna is still in their hands..."

Then a familiar voice came through the speaker, so desolate and merciless that it chilled Isabella to the bone:

"Don't bother. Stop all payments."

It was Matteo's voice.

A boundless chill shot from the soles of her feet to the crown of her head, colder than the freezer itself.

Whatever tenderness Isabella still had for Matteo was buried for good.

One year later. The Palermo high court handed down its final judgment on the mafia case that had shocked all of Europe.Bianca was convicted of conspiracy to kidnap, first-degree murder, large-scale money laundering, and federal witness intimidation. On the combined counts, she received life imprisonment without parole. She would spend the rest of her life in one of the harshest maximum-security prisons at the foot of the Alps, in endless isolation and madness.Matteo De Luca was convicted of concealing his decision to terminate the rescue, unlawful imprisonment, ordering Isabella confined in cold storage, breaching the neutral line to provoke law enforcement, and witness coercion. Because he surrendered the key in time to stop the explosion and gave a full confession, the court sentenced him to fifteen years. Before beginning his sentence, he publicly renounced the De Luca name and its bloody legacy. The Moretti port, once shrouded in gloom, had been transformed. No crest of Mafia pow

Camila's terrified shout had barely faded when the encrypted transmitter at Julian's side began flashing wildly. The command center delivered terrifying news: the port handover had left a brief gap in security, and the last large evacuation ship carrying relocated witnesses had departed Marseille twenty minutes earlier and already reached deep water!Aboard were Anna's family, the elderly ship's doctor Vincenzo, and dozens of women and children long protected by the Safe Passage Program. Bianca's remaining diehard gunmen had already infiltrated the crew in sailors' uniforms. They had also planted high explosives in the refrigerated hold on the lowest deck, wired to a remote scuttling valve set to open automatically in forty-five minutes! This was more than revenge. It was a massacre meant to destroy everything Isabella believed in.Matteo heard the commotion from his temporary holding cell. When his lawyer told him Bianca had triggered the destruction code, he lunged at the bars, his e

The vast medieval courthouse in Palermo lay under a silence so severe it was hard to breathe. The air smelled of old wood and law books. Every gallery seat was filled, and hundreds of eyes fixed on the center of the courtroom. At the final hearing, Bianca arrived in a long black dress fit for mourning and brought her young twins, Leo and Clara, to the witness stand. Before a wall of cameras, she delivered the performance of her life, accusing Isabella through tears. "Your Honor! This woman wanted control of the port so badly that she was willing to destroy these innocent children's father! She's a dangerous lunatic! At the christening, she tore a keepsake from a child's neck. During the Council blackout, she even tried to carry off my son by force! There is no line she won't cross!"The courtroom erupted, whispers rolling through the gallery like surf. Bianca was weaponizing motherhood as an unbreakable shield.Under that vicious appeal for public sympathy, Isabella sat composed at the

Twenty-four hours into the freeze order, tension inside the Marseille office had become oppressive. Armed federal officers patrolled outside the windows. Inside, not a sound broke the silence.Federal Commissioner Smith sat at the head of the conference table and dropped a thick stack of documents before him. "Ms. Moretti, since you present yourselves as a legitimate witness-protection network, the Safe Passage Program must provide incontrovertible evidence before the deadline that the key witnesses in your care, including former casino accountant Anna, former ship's doctor Vincenzo, and the underage courier Camila, are all here of their own free will. We must confirm that their testimony was not secured through incentives or violent coercion."At the worst possible moment, Matteo, stripped of his command and under house arrest, made a reckless and potentially fatal move in secret.Anna still refused to sign the final sworn statement, fearing reprisals from Bianca's remaining people. The captivity footage seized from the refrigerated barge not only shattered the last of Matteo's dignity and self-certainty; it also opened an unexpected path into the darkest part of the past.In the dim safe house, Luca replayed the grainy footage filled with screams more than a dozen times. His clouded eyes stayed fixed on a blurred figure at the edge of the frame before he jabbed the pause button. The image froze on a man dropping bloodied gauze into a basin. He wore a hood, but the index finger of his left hand was missing a joint, and as he handed over the instruments, he swore from habit in a distinctly Sicilian dialect."That's Vincenzo Caruso..." Luca's voice shook with excitement. "Vincenzo, the former medic aboard the Moretti family's armed smuggling vessels. He left the life two years ago, claiming severe rheumatism, and he's been hiding in the Sicilian countryside ever since!"Following that thread, Isabella immediately activated the most covert intelligence network the Sa

One crisis followed another. While preparing to move Anna, Nora walked into an ambush by Bianca's men on the edge of the port district and was abducted.Bianca left behind a bomb wired to a two-hour countdown and a demand: the original ledger and Camila in exchange for Nora's life.Meanwhile, Matteo used the old casino security network to learn that Nora was being held on a refrigerated barge moored at an abandoned dock. The exclusion order kept him away, so he rushed the coordinates to port police and shouted into the phone, nearly frantic, "Bella! Wait for the police! That's a refrigerated ship. You cannot go into another cold room. Not ever!"Isabella glanced at the tide table and said flatly, "That barge will reach open water in forty minutes. By the time the police arrive, there will be nothing left but a body."She handed Julian a certified copy of the paper ledger, packed an empty box as a decoy, and mobilized several of the cooperative's port tugs to stage a massive safety-insp
